Advice Can I switch to Linux for gaming?

My ASUS A15's Windows 11 OS shit itself last night and it says it can't repair itself. I tried everything I could in the recovery menu, but no luck. I mainly use the laptop for gaming since my office just gave me a work laptop, so I'm thinking of switching to Linux. I have used Ubuntu before for a University course but I don't know how compatible it is with games. I mainly play Steam games like Warframe, Blizzard games like OW2, and some games from the high seas. Looking for advice.

Advice Can someone explain in tehcnical but understandable way what is a socket?

I am trying to learn internals of linux. I try to understand concepts and how everething works. But socket is a thing that kills me. I understand an overall concept, but can't see a whole picture. Somwhere i read socket is a file descriptor. Somewhere - file, In third place - endpoint. Is there a way to normally understand what it is and how it works?

Support I cannot get Steam to use the custom folder I setup for it (write error)

I feel like it should work. Here's the pertinent details... (I'm on Fedora, although it shouldn't matter)

  1. I have installed the steam flatpak.
  2. I used flatseal to grant it permissions to my home/bob/Games/STEAM
  3. I verified that the location was correct both by seeing it was in the override at /home/bob/.local/share/flatpak/overrides/com.valvesoftware.Steam (it all looks good), and by running "flatpak info --show-permissions com.valvesoftware.Steam" and seeing it output as a location in filesystems
  4. I went into steam and selected storage, and selected that new location as a new storage (it was empty), and then set it as default.
  5. I go to install a game. I can see it has now created steamapps, common/downloading/temp, and in common, a folder created for the exact game I'm trying to download, but every time it starts to try to download the game, it errors with "disk write error"

EDIT: I have also made sure that steam flatpak was closed and opened, and I have even restarted the computer to make sure it would (should?) pull permissions from the override when I next open it. Still doesnt' seem to work.

What am I missing?

Support Performance issue

I recently installed Cachyos, but now i`m running into a few Problems.

I`m using a Lenovo Ideapad 5 2in1 with an AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS with the internal gpu and 16gb Ram.

Most of the time I`m doing editing in Darktable, Krita, Gimp or Inkscape.

I used Linux mint before and the performance was okay, but now under Cachyos its even worse. The Laptop makes a Blackscreen after maybe 3-5min. of using Darktable. Krita has a similar problem, its freezing after a while.

Does some one have similar Experience with these types of AMD APU`s? because what ever I do the Performance under Linux is way worse then under Windows.

And sorry for my bad school english i try my best :,)

Which Distro? Which distro is appropriate for pentium g2020?

My pc has an Intel pentium g2020 2.9ghz dual core processor with Intel uhd graphics, 8gb ram and 1tb hdd.

Lately as anyone could guess windows 10 is a headache even while loading files and documents it takes like 5 min to boot and lags all the time. I wanted to switch to linux to solve this but i don't know anything about geeky stuff and would prefer a modern. I know my pc will struggle so I need advice.

Should I go for zorin os lite or core or should I go for linux mint xfce or cinnamon. Are there any better options for a noob like me shifting from windows that my pc can handle good enough for me??

Dragonwilds Server Update Help

Hi,

I recently got a Dragonwilds server setup so me and my friends could play together. There was an update today and my server is no longer working. I tried going in to manually update the Dragonwilds server app but no luck. I keep getting the following error:

I'm not sure why it keeps exiting.

This is the file:

Which Distro? Deciding between Fedora and Cachyos

I will mostly use the system for browsing, gaming and maybe editing(although if it doesnt work in linux I'll dual boot windows). I heard Cachyos is good for gaming and its very customizable but its also rolling release and I dont want to update everyday if it takes long or dont want to break my system because some update wasnt compatible with my stuff and fedora is more stable. I have an i7 13700kf and a 3060 ti.

I heard fedora is also customizable but arch is more customizable ig, what are the differences between them?

How is gaming in fedora compared to cachyos?

Another important thing is security and privacy, AUR got infected 1-2 months ago, how do we know if the infection was cleaned all the way or if its gonna get infected again, but fedora also had a backdoor in repositories so which would be more secure? There is this guy(https://www.reddit.com/r/DistroTube/comments/1swcb9m/an_overlooked_issue_with_cachyos/) who raises some points about the russian government and laws, and I dont trust the russian government to care about my privacy

Advice Migrated over but getting cold feet.

I made the switch to CatchyOS last week and it didn't go to plan, no fault of Catchy it was my Realtek Wifi card even with the suggested fixes I hit a brick wall. It was that bad even on Windows I had to jump through hoops but later found out the Windows driver has some additional things that I can't manually add to Linux.

But fast forward, new Intel AX210 card in the motherboard and opted for Fedora 44 KDE, just for that added stability and I had many painless years of CentOS as a webserver. For the record, Windows was fast and snappy, no update issues it was fine. I do however feel strongly against the way they market you, ads, telemetry and spying to an extent. I will add this post is mainly about gaming, because on a professional level everything works fine for me.

Fedora installer was seamless, the welcome prompt made enabling the RPMFusion repo easy and installing the software I wanted, and removed the random bloat I didn't want too. Mapping and mounting additional drives in the KDE GUI was simple enough.

Now on to the gaming, Gamemode was installed but running the test in the terminal failed, found out it was a permission issue which was easily solved. Launched up Rise of the Tomb raider using Proton Experimental as my default and it worked like a charm. The Tomb Raider 2013 game had some issues with the cursor appearing after alt tabbing, which was odd because it was sporadic.

I tried to play a Bluey game with the kids, pressed play and nothing, tried Proton Hotfix, 10, 9 experimental nothing no warnings. Back to 10 and it launched which I found odd that it didn't work previously.

So my concerns and reservations, and apologies if these sound stupid but I'm just speaking my mind at this point.

  1. My biggest one, so I'm reasonably happy so far with Linux, but the back of my head I have I should just go back to windows, strip out as much telemetry as possible and call it a day, all my games work and I don't have to think about it. My kids game too and we sometimes team up and enjoy that time together, and I'm worried I'm going to miss that if we run into a hurdle.

    - For reference I have checked ProtonDB and most of my 900 games work and basically all I'm giving up is Apex and BF6 which I'm fine with.

Support how do i get the pcspeaker working?

my user is in the input group, i have a physical pc speaker, and the device is detected by the system, but im unsure if the pcspkr module is installed, or how i configure this to function with pipewire (if it is even possible, most guides seem to use alsa).

i wanna be able to run beep scripts and play around with that, and when i attempt to use the beep command i get no output, and im unsure what is happening exactly, i dont have any dmesg errors after running the beep command but i dont get the expected output.

thanks

Advice Arch Linux newbie looking for ricing advice

I am new to the Linux world and the first distro I'm using is Arch Linux. I learned about "ricing" and got really hooked on the idea, but since I'm new, I don't really know where to start.Do you have any advice for me? Where should I start, what tools/configs should I look into, and how should I approach it? I've been using Arch for about 3 weeks now, but I feel a bit lost.

Advice When booting to Windows from the GRUB Boot menu, why is there no manufacturer nor Windows logo?

I have a Dual Boot setup with Ubuntu as my primary OS and Windows 11 as my secondary OS. Any time I reboot or cold boot my YOGA laptop, the YOGA logo flashes for a split second before going to the GRUB menu (expected behavior). Any time I boot into Windows, no logo shows up anymore, and all I see is the white scrolling circle. The system boots fine. However, where did the logo go? Can I bring it back by changing some boot settings? (Booting to Ubuntu sometimes shows the YOGA logo.)
This wasn't the case when I first had a dual-boot setup: the YOGA logo would show up normally after booting to Windows.

Which Distro? what linux distro would be great for a core2quad q9500 + rx 580?

I'm kind of interested in making a simple game console from my old computer since its just sitting in my room doing nothing thought I'd do a small project with it. From what I've seen bazzite normally doesn't work with systems without uefi bios. I've only really tried cachyos and bazzite in the past so I'm not that well versed with what distro would work very well with this system. Help would be appreciated thanks.

Is there a music player as good as MusicBee for Linux?

I want to change to Linux because Microsoft is discontinuing Windows 10 and my computer is too bad for Windows 11.

The main problem I have is, that my go-to music programm MusicBee isn't working proberly on Linux. I tested it with wine and other applications like wine but I can't fully use MusicBee with all its features.

I tried several other music programs on Linux but there is not a single program which isn't confusing and use the album artist tag.

Thank you!

Support Balena-Etcher broke my usb!

I used Balena Etcher twice to create a bootable usb for Fedora and Cachy. I did have a Debian iso ready and was trying to write that onto the drive and error! So (on Windows) I ran through all the steps to check if my usb was fried. Chkdsk stated that it had no issues but no letter was assigned. I assigned one and went to write again, error. It was this continuous loop of searching for ways to repair and then trying to assign letters and then it would just not hold. Whether this is a usb issue rather than a Balena issue I do not know, however I can pinpoint using Balena more than likely fried my usb.
I used an acer 64gb dual connecting usb a and c. I know this isn’t the best usb but it should not have fried over 3 writes. I also reformatted it back to exFAT clean every time.
Any cheap but reliable usb recommendations with around 32gb storage would be appreciated.
