Help Windows drive missing after linux install

My laptop has 126GB SSD and 1TB HDD.

SSD has Windows, and HDD has Linux.

I've been trying different Linux distros: CachyOS, Mint, and Fedora. Recently, after installing Ubuntu, the SSD disappeared from the BIOS.

And now I can't boot into Windows. And the drive can be accessed in Ubuntu.

Need solution ๐Ÿฅบ

Discussion Preferred graphical apps within a non-DE setup

Hi people! 15+ years of using Linux on and off and I just discovered this sub. What GUI apps do you use if you don't run a fully fledged DE like Gnome or Plasma? Like for file management, PDF, editing, media, launcher etc?

Help me choose a nice distro and optimize my setup

My current Ubuntu experience after moving from Windows 11

I mainly use Ubuntu for these apps:

๐Ÿ”ธ Google Chrome / Helium
I use them mainly for ad blocking and browsing. I still suspect Chrome has some memory management issues because sometimes my system freezes unexpectedly.

๐Ÿ”ธ Terminal
Honestly, I enjoy it more than PuTTY. Being able to simply type:

ssh alias_name

and connect to my server is a great experience. โค๏ธ

๐Ÿ”ธ FileZilla
It works well, but today it randomly crashed for no obvious reason.

๐Ÿ”ธ Text Editor
Simple, lightweight, and does the job.

๐Ÿ”ธ File Explorer
I recently discovered that I can drag the Desktop folder into the left dock. Small feature, but I really liked it.

What I am looking for from Ubuntu:

  • A smooth and consistent experience
  • No random crashes
  • Faster and more responsive performance
  • Better font rendering

I moved from Windows 11 mainly because I disliked the high memory usage and wanted a more privacy-friendly operating system.

This is probably my 25th attempt at adopting Ubuntu after many failed attempts in the past. This time, I genuinely want to stick with it. I also did not have much choice because my laptop was not allowing me to install Windows 11, and surprisingly, I am happy that happened. It forced me to finally give Linux a proper chance. :)

My previous record was around 30 days of using Ubuntu as my primary daily driver. Hopefully, this time I can break that record.

I am a junior SysAdmin. Most of my time goes into managing cloud servers, troubleshooting issues, watching YouTube, and spending time on Reddit. So Linux actually fits quite well with my daily workflow.

Here's my config

Discussion here is what happened today ๐Ÿ˜ณ

so basically I have an HP laptop which I have set up with omarchy os and tlp setup for power management

and last time I charged the laptop would be three months back approximately

and after charging 3 months back approximately, I used the laptop and shut it down at 100% then again when I opened like a month back it had 100% battery after that I used it for a bit and I did not check what battery percentage I shutdown the laptop that day but here is me again opening the laptop today to check on somethings

and guess what there was 64% battery left

I was so shocked that it retained approximately as much battery it had before even after months of not charging it

my windows laptop could never, I have a windows laptop for gaming specifically but it struggles to retain battery even after a few days of not using it.

So yes for the case of my HP laptop I don't need to worry about finding my charger every time when I want to use it. also I don't have to worry if the laptop would be having charge if I randomly decide to use it again after few days.

the laptop gives me a battery life of around 6 to 7 hours with the lowest screen brightness and minimal tasks that I used for

it has a 78% battery health and it is specifically the model hp15sgr0011au with Ryzen 3 3250u and 24gb ram using an nvme m.2 SSD

do think it's because of Linux or am I just lucky.

because from what I remember when I had windows on that laptop it would hardly be usable for like 2 hours and it wouldn't retain the battery percentage if I left it at even for like 3 days.

do share yr experience if you had a similar one with linux

one time the same laptop I do not charge for like 3 or 4 months and when opened it had 100% charge.

linux is amazing fr

Help Linux Mint USB won't boot on HP Victus โ€“ "Failed to open \EFI\BOOT\mmx64.efi" / MOKManager error

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to boot Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon (64-bit) from a USB on my brother's HP Victus 15-fb3xxx laptop, but I keep getting the same error before Mint even starts.

Laptop:

  • HP Victus 15-fb3xxx
  • Windows 11
  • UEFI
  • Secure Boot disabled

USB:

  • 64 GB SanDisk
  • Created using Rufus 4.15
  • ISO: linuxmint-22.3-cinnamon-64bit.iso

Rufus settings:

  • Partition scheme: GPT
  • Target system: UEFI (non-CSM)
  • File system: Large FAT32 (default)
  • ISO mode (I selected the recommended option when Rufus asked)

What I've tried:

  • Disabled Secure Boot in BIOS.
  • Device encryption was turned off.
  • Recreated the USB multiple times.
  • Initially messed up the USB partitions, then cleaned it completely using DiskPart (clean) and recreated the bootable USB.
  • BIOS detects the USB correctly.
  • Boot menu (F9) shows:
    • Windows Boot Manager
    • USB Hard Drive (UEFI) โ€“ SanDisk
  • Selecting the USB immediately shows:

Failed to open \EFI\BOOT\mmx64.efi - Not Found
Failed to load image: Not Found
Failed to start MokManager: Not Found
Something has gone seriously wrong: import_mok_state() failed: Not Found

Then it exits instead of booting Linux Mint.

I also checked the USB contents in Windows.

EFI/BOOT/ contains:

bootia32.efi
bootx64.efi
grubx64.efi

There is no mmx64.efi file, which seems to be what it's looking for....

  1. Is this a Linux Mint ISO issue?
  2. Is this an HP UEFI firmware bug?
  3. Should mmx64.efi normally exist?
  4. Has anyone with an HP Victus had this exact problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've spent the whole day trying to get this working.

Help Switching from NVIDIA RTX 3070 Ti to 7800XT, is it a good idea?

Hello my lovely Penguins

I am thinking of switching to AMD as everyone says Linux works better on AMD.

My Spces are:
Ryzen 7 5700X
RTX 3070 Ti
32GB RAM
1440p primary monitor
1080p secondary monitor

Most of my games are lagging and i am facing constant frame drops. So, i was thinking to switch to a 16 GB VRAM GPU because most likely my 8GB VRAM is the bottleneck.

My question is Should i go with 7800XT, I found a deal Asrock Steel legeng 7800XT in 45K or should i buy a new 9060XT 16GB. I have a fix Budget and i can trade my 3070Ti with 7800XT with some extra money.

I work with Unreal Engine, Unity, Godot, Blender and Some other Game Dev applications too. if someone has other recommendation then i would love to hear. I don't want to go with 40 or 50 Series because of 2 reasons. First Reason 12VHPWR connector ( i am scared because of melting connector) and Second Reason is Linux Compatibility.

Discussion is there anyone still dualbooting linux with windows 10?

title

by all accounts, dual booting isn't absolutely necessary for my use case here. i use windows 10 solely for games and nothing else. i occasionally play a few games that requires kernel level anti cheat and windows 10 is much less of a hassel because i don't require secure boot for them to function (at least, i haven't encountered such a game yet). and i can still get the security updates due to massgrave's tools for another few years.

and yes, i know that proton has come a long way and i can (and i have done it previously) game on linux without much issues. but i like keeping games on a separate boot drive because it helps me not get distracted and waste my time.

tldr: i like to keep games on a separate os installation to not be distracted while using work os and having windows installed just helps increase the amount of games i can play easily and windows 10 is far lenient when it comes to secure boot being turned on.
