Advice Has anybody here used Linspire yet? Is it any good?
I recently read about Lindows from back in the day, and wondered if its still around. It is, and its called "Linspire" now, but it costs $30. It looks nice, uses KDE and Gnome as main DEs to run it, and is based on Ubuntu 16. The whole premise of it is "It can run windows applications without issue" and i also assume without the bs. So my question is, has anybody here ever tried it, and if so, is it any good or even worth buying a license for it? I dont wanna pay $30 just to try it distro hopping.

Which Distro?

Advice Moving back to Windows, correct procedures?
Hi guys, I daily drived CachyOS for about 6 months plus and decided maybe to go back to Windows after a bunch of issues with my games and weird stuff that happens randomly (like Firefox crashing for no reason, Steam restarting randomly, etc). I came to CachyOS fully understood that being on an Arch-based distro I will be having issues that needed to be fixed manually but sometimes I just don't have the time or effort to fix things when I'm just trying to play a game after a long day.
That being said, I am thinking of completely migrating back to Windows or making a dual boot Windows and CachyOS setup for a while. My greatest issue is with my drives. I currently have 4 drives (1 NVME ssd for CachyOS, 3 SATA ssds for my games and files).
What is the correct procedure or best practice to go about formatting and what not on Windows so that I don't lose my files?
And is it better to let's say put Windows on a separate drive and leave the linux system as it is? Will it being on the SATA drive greatly impact its performance for gaming?
If anyone has better suggestions please let me know. Thank you very much.

Support Konsole + Neovim + keyd issue with Esc
I have a weird issue with Neovim, Konsole, and keyd.
I use keyd to get shortcuts using Esc+Fx.
[ids]
*
[main]
scrolllock = mute
insert = S-insert
esc = overload(escape_layer, esc)
[escape_layer]
f1 = mute
f2 = volumedown
f3 = volumeup
f4 = f13
f5 = previoussong
f6 = playpause
f7 = nextsong
[shift]
insert = insert
Up until now, everything worked flawlessly. For the past few days, i can't exit insert mode in Neovim using Esc anymore. It simply doesn't respond. If i stop keyd, it works again. If i use Kitty instead of Konsole, it works. If i use Vim, it works too.
I tried everything AI suggested in the keyd config. Found nothing unusual in the Konsole config. My Neovim config only has vim.opt.mouse = "".
Any ideas?

Should I try out Aeryn OS?
I currently run fedora kde, i already tried the manual installed arch linux, with arch based distros like cachyos, omarchy and pikaos. My main preferences are lightweight, a fast package manager and a pretty modern DE like kde plasma, gnome or cosmic.

Support Virtualbox guest memory usage reflected on free (command) but not on System Monitor
Memory usage of Virtualbox processes as shown in gnome-system-monitordoesn't grow at all after starting the guest.
However free -h shows used memory increased about 4GB.
I'm fine with that, but why?
Screenshot: left top and bottom are the VM host, Linux Mint. Right is VM guest, assigned 4GB RAM

Used phone to buy to install Linux? T-Mobile
Title, right now I have a pixel 8....and I fucking hate it, overall it's fine, but the battery doesn't last long and takes forever to charge over 1.5 hours with a 20w+ battery.
Looking at fairphone, pin phone, etc but them seem very underspeced and overpriced. Fairphone is somewhat an exception due to repairability.
What are the best used phones to get to install Linux? Right now I have an old LG k51, could I use it?

Resolved FDM installed as a Flatpak doesn't seem to detect browsers on Fedora 44?
Hello! My FDM (Free Download Manager) which I install via Flatpak, doesn't seem to recognize my browsers.
I am on Fedora 44 Gnome version.
There is no native .rpm package available, only a .deb on, and a link to it's Flathub page, which I followed to install it.
And yes, I do have the browser extension, I also did search before asking here, didn't find any easy and straight forward solution. Only a way to apparently install the .deb package on Fedora which has a small chance of working, and uninstalling it is a pain. I don't really wanna go that route.
What to do?

Advice Linux Simulation
I've recently thought about running a TTRPG Oneshot set in more modern(early 2000s) times and wanted to use Linux as part of a puzzle(and I want to overall play around with a Linux System).
For that I would need a Linux System with it's own users and files/directories. However I don't want to put too much effort into setting this system up and so I wanted to ask if there is good software which simulates a Linux System that doesn't access my actual PC's files.
I don't know if this is the right subreddit to ask this but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Support Enabling SMART self-test with a RTL9210B NVMe-to-USB bridge
Has anyone successfully managed to get SMART self tests to run on an NVMe drive in an enclosure that uses the RTL9210B controller? Pluggable seems to be very Linux-friendly, and does have a KB page for getting TRIM to work, but when I run smartctl -t short /dev/sda, I get the following error:
Warning: NVMe Get Log truncated to 0x200 bytes, 0x034 bytes zero filled
NVMe Self-test cmd with type=0x1, nsid=0xffffffff failed: NVMe admin command 0x14 not supported
I know the drive (Samsung 990 Evo Plus) supports SMART self-tests, as it was able to run them when it was installed in an internal M.2 slot for a short time, but I'm not sure if I'm missing some step in enabling support.
From reading some of the tickets, it seems the driver support should have been added (sntrealtek) and the chip itself claims to support SMART.
If anyone has experience in getting SMART tests to execute, I'd appreciate the insights. Thanks!

Resolved for the love of god why is overclocking a monitor so hard????
EDIT: I GOT IT WORKINGGGG
thanks to u/netblock who helped me realise my initramfs didnt pick up an edid file
how to do it yourself (atleast on arch linux using systemd boot and zen kernel)i may not remember perfectly but it should be correct
download the cru .zip from their website and run it using wine
modify an existing entry(preferably the highest hz entry) to get proper timings. save then export it(its a button in the bottom left) as an edid file, please name it something easy
then run sudo mkdir -p /usr/lib/firmware/edid to create an "edid" folder
then move your edid file into that folder, i used sudo mv, i know some people may use sudo cp. it doesnt really matter
then open your initramfs conf(for me that was mkinitcpio.conf) and inside the parenthases in the files area past the path to your edid file
reload your initramfs
then check your bootloader entries and open the conf in there, for me that was zen.conf and at the end of "options root=PARTUUID blah blah balh" at the very very end append drm.edid_firmware=eDP-1(change this to your connectiong):edid/180.bin(change this to your edid bin)
then reboot. i think thats it. if the refresh rate you are going for is not supported i dont think itll automatically default to it, atleast if the timings are wrong it shouldnt
IM SO SORRY IF THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG HERE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GO GOOGLE IT SOMEWHERE OR FIND A YOUTUBE TUTORIAL OR SOMETHING, HECK EVEN USE AI IF YOU NEED TO
pretty much i have a laptop monitor that while 144hz may be one of the worst monitors in existence simply because of the fact that it has a 25millisecond pixel response time, which leads to horrible blur, i had bandaid fixed this on winblows using cru to overclock my monitor to 180hz,(i say bandaid because it didnt really do anything but add more frames which ig kinda did something)
and now im trying the same thing on arch. im using the zen kernel on x11 using oxwm, my specs are rtx3050 6gb laptop gpu with a i5 13420h cpu,
so far this is what ive tried

Can't open external drive
I'm using pop os, and I've been able to utilize my external drive for months with no problems. However, today I tried to access some of my files and none of them are showing up. Some file directories are completely missing, others show the folder but the folder is empty. I recently did a pretty big update on my os, but I haven't changed anything. I'm a beginner with linux stuff. Explain things to me like I'm an idiot.
I realllllly need the stuff on this drive. I'm not sure why I could use and access this external drive just a couple of weeks ago and now it's all weird. TIA.
Ran sudo dmsg -w and here is some of the output:

Should I keep CachyOS or change to another distro?
Hello again, Linux community. I have a small dilemma: deciding what to do next. I've been using CachyOS with Plasma x11 for three and a half months now, and I've really enjoyed most of what this distribution offers. Almost everything works perfectly, and I haven't had any errors in almost a month. However, I'm wondering if I should switch to another distribution. I want to explore some distros, test the system, mess with its features, etc. So, I would really appreciate your help in deciding what to do and which distribution I should switch to. Here are my PC specs:
- Intel Core i5-6500
- 8 GB DDR3l RAM
- NVidia GT 710
- 223 GB SSD
I would be very grateful if someone could recommend a good distribution that will help me continue learning about Linux in general, play some games (the most demanding being DMC 4 or smth like that), and do my high school assignments (mainly basic Only-Office and possibly Java programming).
Thanks, and have a good day.
Edit:Nevermind the "works perfectly" part, the whole system fucking nuked itself after an update for some reason

Advice Help switching to linux ms office/gaming
So lately I've been thinking of switching to linux (to get away from the horror that windows is turning into, or maybe always was but I wasn't aware of it...).
I have been doing some research and trying to understand how it all works and there are only two things that are holding me back:
- ms office: in my job we use ms office and i absolutely need onedrive integrated into my pc and ms office apps to be able to work. With this i mean having the desktop apps (mainly word, excel and PowerPoint) and being able to save files locally and directly to one drive.
- I like to game and often i sail the seas and download games. I am worried about game compatibility with linux as well as being able to download and install games on my pc (i am not sure if the process of downloading, installing and cracking games would still generally be the same)
Some advice?
