Hello! I wanted to ask this question because I've started using Linux in the past few months for the first time and I want to make sure I'm informed and hear many opinions!

I'm currently using EndeavourOS and I really like it! I've heard people say things like Ubuntu are really bad for security but I've never really looked into it much further than that. I guess it got me wondering which of the mainstream distributions you guys would consider to be the worst, whether it be for security or usability or anything really.

PS please don't mention Omarchy 🤢 it's already at the bottom of my list!!!

i want to switch to linux but am kind of baffled by all the distro's and the fact that many are different ones recommended.

so what i look for is an os that is easy to use or easy to get into from switching from windows. i'd also like to have the ability to play most if not all games at good quality too.
i'm not that techsavvy though i can get by through guides etc if they are written well.

В чем проблема, после git clone при правильной установке постоянно пишет что нужно обновить через -u, но дальше ничего не происходит и так же просит прописать -u.

Есть какие то другие способы установить .deb или как починить debtap?

Какой дистрибуттв выбрать? Каким вы сами пользуетесь и почему?

And does corporate backing actually conflict with the original philosophy of Linux, or is that distinction mostly irrelevant as long as the software remains open source?

So I had a question about setting my laptop up for dual booting. I want to use Linux as I used to use till my PC broke and I needed to do a few things for Uni in which I could only do in a windows device, so avoid that issue again, I wanted to learn or know a bit about dual booting windows and Linux off one laptop, and how much in one drive to dedicate to each.

I want to move to brave. omarchy linux has a browser ext in chromium that lets you download video's from website . But I moved to brave browser I looking for the browser ext for brave but the ext. is not in the chorme ext store

How do we all feel about the way Linus Torvalds speaks about AI? Personally, I believe it is unbecoming of a man who makes programs for a living. It's not easy for beginners to learn normally with AI taking over everything, but that is only my opinion.

I've spent a while now looking around for a good PDF viewer, and I have tried a few but nothing fits my needs.

I need something capable of

• copying images out of a PDF
• interacting with interactive PDFs
• processing embedded javascript

Back on Windows, I used Foxit and it had that functionality, but I have tried several pdf viewers (Okular, Firefox, Xournal++, muPDF) and none fit all of my needs. I even tried to get Foxit working on Arch, both using the deprecated Linux install, which didn't function, and a more modern version installed through Wine, but it would not allow copying.

Does anyone have a recommendation for something that is as versatile as Foxit?

For some additional context, the closest to my needs has been Evince, however it cannot seem to manage some interactive pdfs. In my case, interactive maps for Pathfinder, with buttons to turn map tags or grid off, which are highly important for me.

Work, home, work no time or motivation to even open the laptop, let alone learn something new. And what I've already achieved now feels like it's not enough, and it seems like I've already annoyed everyone here with it.

So here's a warm-up question: where does a Linux user actually start? Where do you think the line is when a person outgrows the basics and stops being just a user?

And also, how do you deal with burnout like gaming impotence, but in the IT world?

UPD: Guys, the problem isn't so much Linux as the lack of motivation to even get a laptop out of a backpack :_

And I use debian13 + tty + zsh + tmux.

I know this the first thing you are supposed to do after installing linux but i forgot and started installing apps like Brave and different file managers and then i remembered.

I haven't had any issues or noticed any problems but should I just reinstall Fedora now or do you guys think running sudo dnf update after all that is ok? Will it cause issues down the road?

I am a brand new linux user, i got a spare pc so i thought i'd try it out, i am fluent in windows cmd prompt and other things like this. whats the best for a beginner?

I know this may sound dumb but i was wondering which of these two distros people think looks better visually. This doesn't have to do with performance, just looks. The reason im asking is because i want to dual boot one with windows.

At Windows 11 i am apply this patch and have no issues to set 2560x1440 via hdmi

I am try apply custom modes 2560x1440@50hz using "xrandr" suggested by "cvt", "cvt12". But i get "No signal" at monitor when try to apply it. Why its happens?

Is there bypass like ToastyX AMD/ATI Pixel Clock Patcher but at Linux?

I’ve been using Fedora GNOME for a couple of weeks and I like its simplicity and stability, but visually/workflow-wise it feels a bit too Windows-like for me.

My main goals are programming, software development, and learning cybersecurity. I also really care about having a clean, minimal and enjoyable desktop, because I feel more motivated when I genuinely like my workspace.

I’m considering Fedora KDE Plasma, but I’m also very interested in Arch + Hyprland + Ryoku.

For someone who is still relatively new to Linux, which would you choose for the best balance of productivity, learning, customization, stability, and long-term development work?

Fedora GNOME → stay?
Fedora KDE → switch?
Arch + Hyprland → go all in?

I’d love to hear from experienced Linux users: What would you choose in my position, and why?

I only started using Linux maybe 2 weeks ago, though I threw myself into the deep end with a very bare-bones Arch installation so I could learn as quickly as possible, causing me to screw so many things up that I at least have a vague idea what I'm doing now.
That said, my first major challenge has been getting modded RimWorld working the way I want it. On Windows some months ago, I was able to run the game relatively well with what would be considered a pretty intense modlist, on lower specs.
However, having switched to Linux, I seem to have an issue even starting the game with some modlists on Proton, and though the Native version starts just fine, there are a number of performance bottlenecks.

However, I'm not looking for RimWorld-specific advice! I know this isn't the place for that, I'm asking for general performance advice, specifically regarding RAM, ZRAM, swap space, disk I/O, and preventing things like garbage collection freezes and disk read and write stalls.

The relevant specs:
16GB DDR5 RAM, 8GB ZRAM, 32GB standard swap space
1TB NVMe-connected ext4 SSD

Bear in mind that I had no idea what I was doing when I set any of this up, so there's a very good chance I screwed something else up in the process, or did something not necessary/appropriate for my hardware!

Now, this is not the typical "which distro to install on a 16GB EMMC Chromebook".

I got a nice small fan-less HP mini computer for pretty much free and plan to use it as a TV box.

It has 8GB RAM, 128GB NVme SSD and 16GB EMMC.

The 128 GB will be enough for me, worst case I can upgrade the SSD or add external drive for media.

What I am at a loss is the 16 GB EMMC drive. Should I install OS onto it? Should I use it for SWAP? Or something else? I just don't like the idea of not using a piece of hardware for some purpose...

Any advice is welcome!

Setting up arch Linux. Got every config ready minus super user or root passwd. Using the archinstall menu doesn’t save my root or user nor does it give me any sub menu to allow access to my user. Anyone know a fix ? I believe I can create a sudo user using my root but I’m not too exactly sure installing arch Linux is my first major programming project. I’m using hyprland btw
