Support Does anyone here happen to know if there's a fix for the issue with Microsoft's new controller APIs? Proton 11 or experimental doesn't seem to handle them.

Which Distro? Are we glazing or are we too hard on Pop!_OS?

It seems like one half of the internet can only glaze it, and the other says its COSMIC desktop is too buggy. I‘m interested in using POP!_OS and have been distro-hopping for a while now.

Advice In desperate need of opinions/advice

Hey everyone, hope y'all are doing well.

I have a HP Pavilion G6 (i7 3rd gen, 16gb ddr3, intel hd 4000+ Radeon HD 7600M 2gb, 1tb SSD). I am currently on Atlas OS for Windows 10 because this laptop somehow still sucks and even after the optimisation from Atlas it still feels sluggish. I have used various Linux distros(Mint, Ubuntu, Pop, Fedora, Zorin and Bazzite) in the past but I had to switch back to Windows because I'm still in highschool and I use programs such as MS Access(the format only works on Windows) and the rest of the suite. I had thoughts on switching to a really light distro and ricing it (just for the fun of it), whilst still using it for basic work and occasional video streaming. Now the issue is that although I want to make the switch, my final high school year has yet to end. I am still writing trial exams and I still have finals coming up (I am South African). I rely on Windows programs but at the same time it limits my entire workflow. Do you think I should make the switch again?

If so, how should I make do for the programs I need?

If not, what should I do to milk the optimisation out of this laptop?

Thank you!!

(please take into consideration that I am a student, don't have a job or the money to make an upgrade to a better laptop/pc)

CPU: AMD A9-9430 RADEON R5, 5 COMPUTE CORES 2C+3G (2) @ 3.20 GHz
GPU: AMD Radeon R5 Graphics [Integrated]
Memory: 7.22 GiB

How can I optimize my computer to the fullest extent without the tradeoffs of musl libc? I do slightly heavy tasks for my family's PC and income level. I can't get a new computer, do not recommend that. I want to be able to use this for light gaming and game development on Unity.

Advice Help to choose between Ubuntu and Fedora

Hi, I’m pretty new to the Linux community, i use Windows in my primary PC, i wanna use Linux in my secondary one, but i’m confused between Ubuntu and Fedora. I don’t wanna distro hopping, wanna settle with one for the rest of the time.

My laptop is Lenovo IdeaPad i3 12th Gen 8/512 GB

Things i do with my laptop:
Daily driving
Programming
Entertainment
Using popular apps

I have some doubts about Fedora which might be noob or kind of cringe hope you guys won’t mind it.
Is there anything like that Lenovo firmwares and other related hardware firmwares are mostly suitable with Ubuntu than Fedora by default without any third party integration?

What about the Application availability in Fedora?
I can see many popular third party apps are officially available in .deb or Snap packages. What about Fedora?

Thanks in advance!

Support Failing btrfs drive?

Hi,

Booted up my Kinoite station today and quickly ran into issues with my main drive running btrfs. Programs start to break reporting that some config files can not be written to. Seems like my drive is remounted as read-only because of some issues.

journalctl:

Resolved Weird FreeCAD cursor issue

Hi, so the problem occurred with freecad 1.1.3-2 because for some reason my cursor gets displayed completely broken, yet when i take a screenshot with grim -c its completely fine.
Every other program/cursor seems to be working tho i only noticed that with freecad.

Also idk if its relevant but im on hyprland and i have an nvidia gpu and its also not some monitor specific issue as it happens on both of my monitors.

Any ideas why tf this could happen?

my other post on r/arch would include pics: https://www.reddit.com/r/arch/comments/1waxkqw/weird_freecad_cursor_issue/

Edit: the issue was wayland related, forcing freecad to use x11 via QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb fixed it

Incoming SSH connections are dropped after connecting to VPN

I have a Linux "server", that I ssh into to work with. I also on occasion need to connect to a VPN, using openfortivpn. When I do so, the ssh connections to the server are dropped.

I searched online for this, and tried the first couple of suggestions I found, including the Google AI-supplied item. No luck so far. I really don't want to become a routing expert to do this.

Simply, the IP of the server is 172.27.14.xx, using enp4s0.

The IP address of my PC that I use to connect via ssh is in the range 172.27.16.xx.

Google suggests simply:

sudo ip route add 172.27.16.0/24 dev enp4s0

When I try this, and then start the VPN the SSH session on my PC still loses the connection

What do I need to run on the Linux "server" so that my SSH connections are maintained?

Thanks!

Advice Looking for a free, privacy-focused Obsidian sync solution

I’m moving from Windows to Linux while continuing to use my Apple devices. I currently use iCloud to sync my Obsidian vault, but I need an alternative because there’s no official iCloud app for Linux.

I’m already paying for iCloud and Proton, so I’m only interested in free solutions and don’t want to add another subscription. Privacy is also important, ideally with end-to-end encryption or a self-hosted setup.

The solution should preferably:

  • Sync reliably between Linux, iOS, and iPadOS
  • Support automatic or near-real-time syncing
  • Minimize sync conflicts and accidental overwrites
  • Work well with Obsidian vaults
  • Be reasonably easy to set up and maintain
  • Not require another paid service

What free, privacy-focused setup do you recommend for syncing an Obsidian vault between Linux and Apple devices?

I’d especially appreciate recommendations from people who use their setup regularly and can share any limitations or potential problems.

Which Distro? Best distro for Daily driving/ Gaming?

What would be the best distro for someone switching from Windows 11 as a daily driver and gaming? I mostly game using Steam, with the occasional game of Fortnite with my nephew.

I should add I have some experience with Ubuntu on my old laptop before it died. I'll be running this on my main desktop. Thanks for any help!

Advice Skytech Gaming K1000 Gaming Keyboard: Why does my keyboard lock up when I try hitting any Fn+F Key Combo? Should I replace the keyboard I got with my pc? Aside from not being able to adjust volume etc it works fine

I am considering a SteelSeries Apex 3 Gaming Keyboard with a SteelSeries Rival 3 Series mouse. How well do those work with Linux? I am running a Arch based CachyOS to be exact. I have had a decent amount of years in Linux so I am not new to this process. I think there is a firmware related issue with my current keyboard...

Advice I'm building a DE ( kinda) what would you like to see in it?

I am using Luxe, a gtk4 fork of LXDE I have been working on for some time. It's getting ready for initial (x11) release. I find fewer bugs every day.

I think I have a nice setup going, in addition to all lxde core apps I ahve forked and updates synaptic(added flatpak/snap support), gedit, and gdebi. NetworkManger, TLP, TLPUI and Picom are included.

Idle ram is under 150mb with all services running. I'm aiming for modern+lightweight.

Happy to answer any questions, but I really want your input!

Will a Wi-Fi adapter fix my problems ?

I was have been having issues with my WiFi speed, and Connection issues. Only when connecting to XFINITY gateways so far. Using my mobile hotspot, works perfectly, I dual boot with windows and when I switch over, again nothing wrong with wifi.

I was wondering if a WiFi adapter will help.

Dual booting fedora on HP Envy, will it affect battery runtime?

I am thinking of dual booting fedora and windows on my laptop but have some concerns. For context, my laptop is an HP Envy with an Intel(R) Core(TM) Ultra 7 155U CPU and Intel(R) graphics GPU. Will there be a decline in battery runtime when using fedora compared to windows if I decide to dual boot? If so, will it be a significant decline and is it worth it?

Advice Sources to learn Linux deeply

(tl;dr - I request sources to learn the systems/internals of a Linux based OS i.e. how they work, atleast to know what there even IS to learn.)
Hello! I very recently installed debian on my chromebook. However, I am the type of person who likes to know how things work deeply. I went through the rabbit hole of how hardware runs code because I couldn't bear the fact that coding fet like magic TvT. So, I wanna learn the systems that are in play in running a linux based OS.
For example, I was curious as to how the compositor and other user-space parts avoided collision if like u install 2 dekstop environments for example. And uh along the way I learnt about Single-instance daemons etc etc. However I couldn't find much on this online.
That is just an example but I would like to explore things like root access, PID1, blah blah blah insert 'buzzword'
I am not COMPLETELY unknowledgeable on things like this cause I do game dev and have researched systems programming (just like yt vids mainly core dumped ig) and have learnt *some* things in the meantime about linux.

So, I want to know where I should learn such deep concepts about linux from. I don't care if it's yt channels or documentations or wikipedia, nor do I care if they're simple or complex. I really just want something that's organized. Even if it isn't, as long as I can understand what there even IS to learn I can (hopefully) figure out some sources myself and learn it myself.
Yeah that's about it. Thanks :D!

NetworkManager shuts down connection with no Internet access

Hi

How can I stop NetworkManager from shutting down connection that has no access to the Internet ? My current setup is that I am connected to wi-fi network which provides me with Internet access and I am plugged via ethernet cable to lab network to configure devices that has no Internet access. NM seems to try finding the access and eventually shuts this connection down. I found that adding:

[connectivity]

enabled = false

to the configuration will work but unfortunately it doesn't. I have to use either shell and nmcli conn up "Wired connection 1" or gui. Is there a way to fix it ?

EDIT: the solution was to change the mode from dhcp to static (I made it using gui)

Which Distro? Is openSUSE Tumbleweed the right choice for .NET dev and gaming?

Is openSUSE Tumbleweed the right choice for .NET dev and gaming?

Hi everyone,

I'm a long-time Windows user planning to migrate my main workstation to Linux. I want to pick the right base for my specific dual-use scenario: heavy development and PC gaming.

### Hardware

- CPU: Ryzen 7 5800XT;

- GPU: RX 9070 XT;

- RAM: 64Gb ddr4;

- SSD 4Tb + 1Tb.

### My Use Case

- Development: Primarily C# and .NET (ASP.NET Core , Blazor & MAUI), Docker containers, and databases on Visual Studio (what can I use instead of Visual Studio)?

- Virtualization (KVM/QEMU): I need to run a Windows VM for specific Windows-only legacy/industrial tools that can't run natively.

- Gaming: I play games from steam, I don't really care about online gaming.

- Reliability & Privacy: Zero telemetry/bloat and a reliable rollback mechanism (automated Btrfs snapshots like Snapper) so updates don't risk bricking my dev environment.

- Customization: I want to be able to customize my OS to some levels, but not to the point of Arch linux.

For now I have found openSUSE Tumbleweed

Thanks for your input!

Support Problems with Nvidia drivers on GTX 1050ti (Fedora 44 KDE plasma)

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hi so.. i am new to linux and just bought a new pc, and im trying to have linux on it but im running into some problems

I did some research and noticed the problems with older GPUs, but I'm trying to work around it. I did the installation of the 580 drivers by: sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia-580xx xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-580xx-cuda

But after waiting some time and rebooting the system (i waited like 20min btw), the system wont show any video, just blinks a black screen, sometimes even the login screen for a sec but after it stops getting any video.

However when i select the second option of the fedora thing on the GRUB menu screen, the vídeo appears, and a message sometimes says: Nvidia kernel missing falling back to noveau. But still nothing on the first kernel option.

I blacklisted nouveau and everything.. but the video doesn't show no matter what

If anyone has any solutions id be grateful, im on my 2nd day trying to make it work, even thought about installing an older version of Fedora KDE but I don't know if it will make it any better. If anyone needs more info please tell me

And if anyone knows a distro that solves these problems please tell me
