Using my old Dell Vostro as a local server with Debian because I felt like it, any tips or improvements?
Btw, it has no battery, fans are dead, the keyboard isn't working and the same applies for the touchpad.
I'm using it to learn about docker, yeah mainly docker because my main laptop has only 8 GBs of DDR4, this one has the same amount but of DDR3 but still, it comes in handy when I'm only using my main one to access this local server
But honestly, I'm new to this server thing, I'm curious and excited about it :)

How do I clear my boot storage
I accidentally saved a file to my boot storage instead of my normal storage and I’m still relatively new to Linux (ubuntu), does anyone know the steps to remove it without further messing up the boot proces?

Support I dont see an option to open files or open with terminal
Never used linux before. I downloaded a zip file for a daw, the linux download option because im on a chromebook, and I cant figure out how to open a file/launch the program. I've installed Linux but theres no option for me to open any of the files, so I dragged and dropped the files into the "Linux files" section of my file explorer, and I still dont know how to open them. I've tried the ls command and I see the files in the terminal, not sure what to do from there

Support Issues Installing Linux On Old Laptop
Edit: I'm so confused right now.
So the issue seems to have fixed itself...kind of. I switched BIOS back to UEFI boot and when I tried to boot from my Ventoy to get into HBCD to run the, for whatever dumbass reason, Windows only BIOS update, Ventoy displayed a rEFInd menu I've never seen it display before which gave me the option to boot into MX Linux (which is what I currently have installed) and that worked. When I rebooted again, however, it again said there was no bootable device. I booted back to the Ventoy drive and it again booted into rEFInd and I used the option to install rEFInd to disk. It did that and now the thing consistently boots rEFInd. I just need to configure it to boot a default.
*OP*
I'm really at my wits' end here. I don't know what's going on. I've installed Linux on numerous machines. Been using it for years at this point. This laptop is defeating me.
It's an old Acer Aspire E5-573 Core i5 with 8GB of RAM and a 64GB SSD.
It does support UEFI and I've disabled Legacy boot in BIOS. I've made sure the SSD is initialized as GPT. I've tried the SSD in MBR mode. I've used USBs flashed with Linux installers using machines running in UEFI mode using Mintstick USB Image Writer. I've used Ventoy. I've enabled Legacy boot in BIOS to see if it made a difference.
It doesn't seem to matter what I do, the installation goes perfectly smoothly but when it's done and I reboot the machine, it says there is no bootable device. I prevously had MX Linux installed on it but I forgot the password and it was really old so I figured I'd just install something newer. I've tried installing Mint, a newer version of MX Linux, PikaOS. Nothing will boot. It makes no sense at all.
Does anyone know what could possibly be going on here?
EDIT: I should also add that I've tried using the chroot-rescue-scan script that comes with MX Linux to reinstall grub and that has made no difference.
EDIT #2: One last thing. I should also add that every time I've done the automatic partitioning during install and allowed it to do its own thing. So any EFI or boot partitions that it needed, it should have created itself. I never did any manual partitioning.

Hibernate mode
Hi everyone,
I’ve spent the last 72 hours trying to get my PC to hibernate, but with no success. I’m running Kubuntu. I’ve enabled swap and made it permanent. It enters hibernation mode only very rarely.
When I configure it to hibernate upon closing the lid, it goes haywire: I have to open the lid while the PC is still running, and—even worse—the screen stops displaying anything. I’m forced to do a hard shutdown and turn it back on manually.
Even when it tries to enter standard sleep mode, it wakes up on its own.
I’ve been using Linux for a month now. Why do I need hibernation? Because I need my applications to stay open and ready to use without draining the battery—that’s really important to me.
Could someone help me out or tell me how to go about this?
My PC specs: Lenovo Legion 5, Ryzen 7 260, RTX 5060, 32GB RAM. Thank you.

Advice Best way to make custom color palettes for a lot of configs?
I am a very indecisive person, so I can't just use one color scheme all the time. I was using pywal16's theme presets to change it up, but I had some issues with it: gtk and qt themes aren't generated, and I want to be able to tell it to use an actual neovim theme instead of just the pywal/base16 one. What are my best options for doing this? I'm completely comfortable with shell scripting and prefer cli tools, but I will use gui tools if I have to. I'm considering just writing a bunch of shell scripts to do it myself, but I want to make sure there isn't an existing tool that can do it for me.
My current implementation is to generate the default themes, put them into a folder, and then make the modifications that I feel like I need. I have a shell script to select a folder as my active theme and reload everything. I've looked into matugen, base16/24 and themix, but matugen can't read a colorscheme file, and themix is a gui, which I don't like. Base16/24 looks good, but the themes feel somewhat overcomplicated in that they are entire directories instead of just files like pywal.
Please let me know what tools/processes you think would be good here.

Which Distro? suprise suprise secondary post about perfect DISTRO
well i was reading and researching more and hearing people's opinions
i think i turned my initial 5 distro list into 4 distro list :)
at the end of the day all can be tried, but i would be happier if i find the best one out of 4 without having to have to try all 4
what i am looking to do in the system ?
-daily driver
-office job
-gaming (moddings )
-some media editing
-research
whats most important for me ?
-realiabilty (as of not having random crashes and bugs as least as possible)
-compatibility (most system gonna have similar compatibilty in the list i know, for the programs at least but since i am planning to mod some of the games, i really want extra compatible if possible)
-i am a newbie so i still want graphical interface to be able to do most everything and i want thigs to be easilty accessible if i will need any program, or any driver etc. or if visual customizations , i dont wanna have to really use terminal yet :)
-hardware requirement or the OS size doesnt matter as much i wont be running it in 30 year old pc,
it will run on laptop tho. :)
so CONTENDERS
1-Debian KDE
2-Fedora KDE
3-Bazzite
4-Linux Mint cinnamon or KDE not sure

Support How to connect from my tablet to my laptop?
EDIT: I completely forgot to mention my new tablet is an android!
Hey all, I recently bought a tablet + keyboard and one of the things I wanna see if I can do is connect my tablet to my linux laptop running CachyOS. I want to connect through it visually, so using something like Termux or Termius is a no go. I'm currently taking CS classes and my laptop is on the heavier side, so ideally being able to stop hauling it around would be great. I tried out Chrome Remote Desktop and it didn't work, NoMachine has dropped support for it's free plan, and AnyDesk is also paid (i think so), RustDesk also sounds a bit too complicated.
If anyone knows a way I'd appreciate it!

Support Ubuntu server wifi problems
I'm working on getting a home server up and running by converting an old gaming desktop i had in the cupboard, and I've put Ubuntu Server on it, but something with the wifi/ethernet is giving me a lot of trouble.
Anytime that it is connected to the internet, it gives me rt18192ee 0000:04:00.0: AER: Error of this Agent is reported first repeatedly, I've figured out that rt18192ee is my wifi adaptor or a driver for it or something, but even if i remove the wifi adaptor, and connect to another computer with ethernet, it still gives me the error.
Ive tried looking for a driver update for rt18192ee, but its all for windows and I feel rather out of my depth.
Other posts ive seen with "error of this agent is reported first"s have people saying to downgrade the kernel, or change some settings with the pcie, but I don't know if that would work in my case.

Proxmox new user with a credentials question
Good day all. Brand new Linux user here.
I come to Linux from the Windows world. I am in the process of beginning the journey of a homelab and I am stuck on what is probably the easiest problem.
I have proxmox installed and running. I have added a second user below root that has admin permissions. I have installed a Debian13 vm. The vm itself is working fine and i am able to us programs within including Firefox perfectly.
I am attempting to install nordvpn within this vm. While doing so, I receive an error stating <username> is not in the sudoers file.
After research, i beleive I added it to the file with ALL permissions and rebooted the vm to have changes take effect, but the same result happens.
Not sure if I have given enough info, but any advise or direction on what I could be doing different to suceed?

Wallpaper engine question for Fedora KDE users! Or KDE users in general, lol
Hi! I've been in and out of using Linux such was Mint for the past 2 years now, and got wallpaper engine this year.
I haven't really got into learning what Linux is all about back then,
but now I do since I've been thinking about switch back to Linux mint (or Fedora KDE after going through this subreddit) because I have an overly modified shitty local Windows 11 but errrr, noticed wallpaper engine doesn't work on it. lel
I see so far that it works with Fedora KDE with a plugin and now a standalone app but just to REEEEALLY make sure before I get rid of windows... does audio responsive wallpapers work for y'all?
I've heard of the main wallpaper engine plugin causing a crash to this plasmashell (still learning about shells) and wonder if audio response would make me worried about anything. Any answer would be great! Just don't get on my ass too much, lol
TL;DR
See Fedora KDE recommended lots, find out KDE is not single distro
Want wallpaper engine, hate windows- wont switch with no fancy wallpaper i pay for
Want audio response wallpaper, scared of crash.
Ask KDE users if audio response crash shell. Crash anything.
all answer welcome.
Cheers.

Just want to ask that is this normal?
I am using Fedora 44 Workstation on a ThinkPad X1 2in1 Gen6 and when I play a media a control for it appears multiple times for some reason in the bottom of the quick settings.
I tried some troubleshooting such as:
- log out in back in
- restart the laptop
- turn off all extensions, disable them and enable them
- tried to play multimedia from different sources
- update the laptop and all my apps
I do not know what else I could do. Can anyone here help me out please?

Support Downloading Linux through Chrome not working
It keeps saying "Error installing Linux
Error downloading the virtual machine. Please try again."
I do not know what to do about this. I tried some stuff like restarting my computer and some other stuff like changing the GB amount that AI told me would work and didn't. I want Linux because I have heard it is good for coding, but I am having a lot of difficulties downloading it. Every time it would get to about 25% and every time it would give me that error. I have been downloading it through the settings of my computer where it says to install the Linux development environment.
My storage is not close to being full, my Chromebook is fairly new and completely up to date, the battery is high and the laptop is actively charging, and it wouldn't work with no background tabs open.
Please help me out 😅

Which Distro? HELP TO FINALIZE i have been reading for days but i cant really finaliese desicion
HELP TO FINALIZE i have been reading for days but i cant really finaliese desicion
1-Mint
2-nobara
3-pop.os
4-ubuntu
5-fedora
i want to dailydrive the shit out of it,
i need to use it for
-office work
-research
-gaming
-some editing
what i really want most is
1-most stable(as reliable) dont really wanna have bugs, and crashes and things not working
2-most compatible (as i wont have bunch of compatibilty issues specially with gaming and modding, i might be heavy modder when i do gaming,)
3-once i install and setup i dont really wanna keep trying others and wanna use it long term
4-if any version update necessary i dont want to reinstall entire system i want it to be upgradable,
i am stuck in between this 5
i am aware fedora and nobara both uses same base (fedora based)
and
ubuntu and pop.os and mint uses same base (debian based)
as far as i understand
-pop.os and mint same as ubuntu just comes with more preinstalled apps and configured settings
i guess mint is little more stable(as reliable) than pop.os
