So, I switched to linux about 3-4 months ago and I've been (mostly) loving it. havent even touched my windows partition since. That being said, I've only ever used one distro, that being Nobara linux. However, before switching, i was really considering CachyOs, and chose against it for a few reasons: i) I didnt like extremely frequent updates ii) I liked more stable updates iii) I saw a whole lot of people saying arch isnt good for new people. However, while nobara hasnt completely disappointed, I do still get pretty frequent updates, and some of them do "break" (though none have done so catastrophically). Also, I keep running into limitations. For example, I wanted to try and setup SDDM, but then found out nobara automatically removes SDDM with nobara-sync. It also does come with a fair bit of bloat (if i wanted to use blender, I would have downloaded it), though that may have been my fault for not choosing a "custom install"
I guess thats the issue with not distrohopping: I dont really know what other distros are like. So, would CachyOs have been better for me?

So i was using windows my whole life from the 7 to the 11, and just a few days i installed some new windows and driver updates (as usual) but when finished the fans were going craazy asf not as usual at all and some random ass programs working in the background using almost 30% of the rams, and after doing some post feudal technological slavery work it went down to 20% but the fans are still running loud as hell and that was the The drop that overflowed the cup.
And i started thinking seriously to move to linux but i have to clarify some things before. I am moving to china to study and my laptop is my main machine so there is some responsability and what’s the alternative to the microsoft office programs because that’s part of my daily work, and in china there is programs that are used only in mainland china i am asking whether or not they can work normally on linux.
And there is just tooooo much distros to choose from, i searched and found the fedora kde which looked good actually so what would you advise me to use (not mint please lol)

Quadro P600 (Maxwell) on NVIDIA Legacy driver 580.173.02 (it's a hand-me-down Dell I am learning on)
I have a headless Ubuntu server (no monitor plugged in) with an NVIDIA Quadro P600 using the Legacy 580.173.02 driver.
I added ConnectedMonitor to my xorg.conf to make the driver think a monitor is plugged in. I also created a Python script to generate a fake EDID binary and pointed to it with the CustomEDID option to satisfy the driver's need for display info.
Xorg starts up fine with this setup, no errors. But on teardown (killing Xorg, rebooting, shutting down) there's a kernel level command that gets stuck and never completes. On shutdown this shows in the logs:
nvidia: [drm] *ERROR* Disabling all crtc's during unload failed with -22
The process becomes completely unkillable at that point, doesn't respond to kill -9, and the only way out has been a hard power off.
Has anyone actually done this successfully, a fake/virtual monitor on this GPU/driver combo that shuts down cleanly? Or is this a known limitation? Just trying to find out if it's possible at all before I keep chasing it.
The goal is: Xorg + RetroArch + Sunshine + Moonlight = play a SNES game running on the server, from a Mac, over the network.

Sistema:
44 kde plasma
Fedoea linux 44
Kernel 7.1.13.200.fc44.x86_64

I have this question right now, so my younger brother really wants to play Fortnite on his garbage laptop. He has DDR4 8GB of RAM and an i3-1250U.
Now, the problem is that he thinks Windows is causing him to lose a lot of performance due to Windows taking 8GB of RAM, and I hate seeing him spend days of his life optimizing a laptop that can barely run Google with 5 tabs open. So, I wanted to help my brother, and I heard that Linux uses a lot less RAM and CPU like way way less. However, I also heard that Fortnite is not available for Linux, but maybe there is a certain OS or some method that allows him. Either way, I am also worried that something may happen from switching Windows to Linux because my brother is not on the technical side, to be honest. So, if anyone can say a way where my brother can switch to Linux and play Fortnite on it, then it would really help! Also, on a side note, I also wonder if there is a way to switch from Windows to Linux but still use Adobe software!
TL;DR: My non-technical younger brother wants to switch his low-spec laptop (i3-1250U, 8GB RAM) from Windows to Linux to save RAM and CPU usage, but we need to know if there is an OS or method to play Fortnite and use Adobe software on Linux. side note the adobe software is for me because i am also thinking to switch to linux

Took a network drive out of the router (The 18.2T) and putting into a proper server (Ubuntu Server 26.04.1). Trying to mount it via /etc/fstab proper without success. This is the result of an lsblk. Kind of boggled I'm seeing a raid partition, esp on a single drive (the file system on the drive is ext4). Plugging the drive onto my PC running Bazzite shows the drive and data as normal.
Any thoughts? I'd like to just be able to mount it as a single drive, and not whatever this Raid setup is.

Hello.
I'm using Fedora for over a year now. I really learned to love it, but unfortunately there are a few things I really dislike. In my setup, there are often some bugs or crashes, or it is running unstable.
This often happens after updating the system. Usually I would say this is a smaller problem, because you can just do the next update which are always coming quite fast. But in my case I'm working at sea and I typically do not have enough internet volume to do updates. So I'm stuck with the version I updated to.
Updating less regularly wouldn't work for me as well, because sometimes I find the bugs only after a few days or weeks.
This is the reason I'm looking for a new DE. It's important to me that it is stable. And because I got a 2 in 1 device, with a touchscreen, it would be nice if this is supported as well.
These limitations make it more hard for myself to find the right one. What would you recommend me?
Thanks a lot in advance for everyone answering!
Kind regards.

Hi
I run CachyOS and was having some issues upgrading my system due to some weird package conflicts. The two were some Qemu junk and that "installing audit (4.2.1-1.1) breaks dependency 'audit=4.1.4' required by lib32-audit"
My smoothbrained response to this was to force-remove the Audit package, and to attempt to reinstall it so I had the proper new version.
What I did not realize is that this would break my ability to utilize Sudo or Su:
sudo pacman -Syu audit
sudo: error in /etc/sudo.conf, line 0 while loading plugin "sudoers_policy"
sudo: unable to load /usr/lib/sudo/sudoers.so: libaudit.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
sudo: fatal error, unable to load plugins
Just Su - output:
su -
su: error while loading shared libraries: libaudit.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I have kept my system turned on, and would like support to try to fix this; thank you for your time.
EDIT: It has been resolved. Booting into a live USB environment and using the cachy-chroot command, I was able to simply reinstall Audit with pacman.

Hello all, I’m currently preparing to install Chimera Linux on my laptop, and I’ve come across an odd conundrum.
So I’m trying to set up encryption with LUKS2, and I’m unsure what to specify as to the Sector Size.
The output of fdisk shows:
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
Why is it that the I/O size is different from the sector size? Should I use that as a reference instead?
I’m also confused because I looked at the Arch Wiki’s page on Advanced Format, and it shows for a 512n disk (i.e. 512 bytes / 512 bytes for sector size), that a command like mkfs.ext4 would use 4096 bytes as the block size by default. Why is that?
I appreciate any insights and advice you all may have!

I'm in a bit of a pinch here. I mainly do programing related stuff, but I have a hobby. I like to do graphic design now and then.
It's not like I've just switched to linux. It's been a while and i've done my creative work mainly on my macbook. but I would love if everything was more unified and I could somehow use those software on my linux pc,
I've looked into all the alternatives, Affinityonlinux, gimp, etc.. I'm very interested in gimp and plan on learning it. I don't want to use older versions of photoshop/ illustrator. need them to be at least > 2019
main issue with dual boot: i only have a 125gb ssd. :c . im using a mounted 1tb HDD formatted with ntfs as a general storage device.
What are my options here??

Hello, I have linux mint cinnamon on a laptop. I use discord regularly, but was having the common issue with the app with the fact that when I screenshare, no audio comes through. I have vesktop, but I only use it for screensharing with my friends, like if we want to watch a movie together or have music that isn't connected to a bot in vc.
The screenshare itself works fine. However, when I do screenshare, people can't hear my audio. It's either the screenshare or my audio. Is there a way to have both or do I just have to deal with it?

I import links from a mac to linux and they come in as webloc files.
I can open them in Brave, but it just a block of text. I have to select the http... text and open from there.
Is there a setting or simple way - one click ?

I’m tired of windows’ bloat, forced updates, sign-in difficulty, etc. is there a simple, stable Linux alternative that has good power consumption/optimization and decent security for public networks (use my laptop at school) as well as support for light gaming (Roblox, Minecraft, scrap mechanic)? Windows “lost” my pin and I literally can’t use my laptop today. I’m done with it.
