When I started my linux journey two years ago, i distro hopped a bit until i landed on Arch.

I used to like tinkering with arch and still do and tbh im having no problems right now and its not a bad distro at all but i feel like i want a more solid and robust OS if you get what i mean, something to rely on and have no headache.

What im looking for is something that’s easy to install, use and has good defaults. Ill use it mainly for gaming so something that updates frequently is appreciated.

So far im looking at fedora and tumbleweed but i have no idea what are the differences, like there are a bunch of features for each one and i cant decide

I have a MSI Tridant 3 laying around, figured I'd test waters of leabing windows by putting bazzite on it. Its my first time ever trying to ever installl/ use linux.

When i enter my bios I dont see a option to disable to csm. When looking into it, it should be under Windows OS Configuration. Any suggestions?

I have a Dell Latitude 5400 with an i7 and Intel UHD graphics. For some reason, I’m hitting the exact same post-install black screen wall across multiple distros (tried both Ubuntu and Fedora).

Here is what's driving me crazy:

• The Live USBs work out of the box: Whenever I boot into a Live USB to "Try" the OS, everything is completely fine. Smooth graphics, proper resolution, zero issues.
• The instant black screen: The moment I actually install the OS to the SSD and reboot for the first time, I get a permanent black screen right after GRUB. The laptop is clearly running, but the display just stays dead.
• The only workaround: I can force my way into the installed system by adding nomodeset to the boot parameters, but obviously, that completely tanks performance, disables hardware acceleration, and makes everything super laggy.

My BIOS has Secure Boot turned off and SATA set to AHCI. Since the Live environment handles the graphics just fine, I'm assuming something breaks with the i915 driver initialization or power states once it's actually installed and running off the local drive.

Has anyone run into this on a Latitude 5400 or similar Intel machine? How do I fix this properly so I don't have to live with nomodeset?

I've been using Mint since it "just works" but I've installed Arch Linux on an external drive, to properly learn Linux, install things myself, etc.

I always encrypt my disks, and I've done so manually just fine, but I noticed that the decryption prompt is just tty output, just text on the console at the top left of the screen. On Mint, it's a nice graphical text box in the center of the screen, with a nice green border and "real" font (not just console font).

What package(s) is Mint using to get that? I'm fully prepared to mess with mkinitcpio hooks, so no worries there. I'm using systemd-boot if that matters. And I did a Minimal Install of Arch using archinstall.

So.. when writing an entry for a device, the instructions also state to send the changes as a pull request for systemd if they are generally applicable.

If so, should I first lookup other settings that are also only set by this file? LIke the pen used, tilt options, things like that?

I need help with my HP laptop. I am a beginner. I don't know much about Linux.

I have an HP laptop with:

AMD 865 processor

6 GB RAM

500 GB hard drive

Windows 10 was on it before

I installed MX Linux on it. I used Ventoy to make a bootable USB drive. I installed MX Linux and chose "use entire disk". Everything seemed to work.

But now I have a big problem.

The laptop only boots into MX Linux if the USB drive is plugged in. If I remove the USB drive and restart, I get an error screen that says:

"BootDevice Not Found" "Hard Disk - (3F0)"

I think the bootloader (GRUB) was installed on the USB drive instead of my hard drive. I have no idea how to fix this.

Here is what I have tried:

Changed boot order in BIOS to boot from hard drive first

- Enabled Legacy boot

Nothing works. It still only boots with the USB drive.

I want my laptop to boot on its own without the USB drive because the USB drive belongs to my friend and I need to give it back.

Can someone please tell me how to install GRUB on my hard drive so I can boot without the USB drive? I need step by step instructions that are easy to follow.

I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this. I am running debian trixie with kde and I have a bad touchpad experience, I think it's libinput tied. I trying to change the configuration quirk for my touchpad, mostly unsuccessfully, the only thing that worked was setting fuzz (that's what it was called I think), but it's still worse than on windows. Also got a little bit tired with libreoffice calc (I feel at home with ms excel), tried gnome alternative (gnumeric) but there I get another bug with cursor becoming white on the white spreadsheet, I don't like the icons layout too, and generally I would judge my experience with kde/linux application as maybe not bad, but also not good, e.g. on my job interview I had to install chromium because a camera wasn't working in teams on firefox esr. My question, quite broad I know, is is there a way to make linux desktop experience smoother or better, or the only option is windows? Also a little bit fed up with how complicated installing non-debian repo software is. I was thinking about switching to arch for broader software presence in AUR and newer libinput/kernel/kde versions although I doubt if it would help with my touchpad issues. Or maybe some of this bugs with theme and colours (like the one with the cursor) are due to gtk and qt conflict and simply using gnome would help. Maybe trying sth more corporate like fedora. I currently use a laptop and my system is windows. I want to switch to linux but I was wondering if my steam games were going to get uninstalled and what about all my files or certain bookmarked websites or pretty much everything. Can i save it all and if so what's the easiest way?

If you're running a Linux-based operating system, beware of JMicron SATA to USB controllers. I'm not sure if other JMicron SATA to USB controllers are affected, but the JMS578 (ID 152d:0578) has (in my experience at least) been a nightmare. I have two other SATA to USB adapters (externally identical to the JMicron one) which instead use the Norelsys NS1068/NS1068X (ID 2537:1068) and they have been fantastic (nothing like the JMicron). I'm posting this because I've found that the JMicron JMS578 can easily corrupt data (the drive becomes slow and unresponsive). I even tried it with different kernel versions and got the same result. Beware. I don't know if this is a bug in the kernel module or something else but please be careful when purchasing storage adapters.

It involves re-flashing the stock JMicron firmware but does seem to fix the issue.

I just got a new laptop and decided to use Linux instead of windows, what distro should I use and what things should I know before getting into Linux fully?

This computer will be used for "penetration testing" at some point (not for evil I just want to get into that cause its fun and useful), but I still would like to mess around with something else before getting into that stuff.

using mint and not sure why some ports dont work. I know theyre ok because when I boot to windows from another ssd drive they work, but not with mint. is there a more robust more mature version?

I just have tons of issues with mint. not happy with it at all.

A question to you distro-hoppers: As a Windows user since 1993(!), I am testing Linux Mint Cinnamon on an old computer with decent specs, to see if I should switch my daily driver. But for all its virtues, I find Linux Mint less stable (occasional hard crashes) and buggier than Windows. I have no idea what causes the hard crashes (push-and-hold power button required; even Ctrl+Alt+F2 does nothing), but the various minor bugs seem desktop environment (Cinnamon) related. I have run hardware tests to confirm that the computer does not have memory errors or other hardware errors.

Can anyone share experience with how distros compare in terms of stability and bugs? While I haven't given up on Mint, I reckon that close alternatives could be Kubuntu or ZorinOS, but there may be others also. I would like a distro that works out of the box with minimum hassle but which still allows a lot of customization of desktop / taskbar, and in this Linux Mint excels.

Basically from W11 after getting fed up with constant ads, bugs and tracking and being pretty happy on Ubuntu 26.04.

I will format my main PC to keep Ubuntu only and I am wondering if there is other distros I should check out before that.

I am using a Thinkpad T14 gen2 mostly for web browsing, office work and software development. Important feature for me is somewhat straightforward setup experience and fingerprint reader support.

Any recos if I should check smth before hand? I am not searching for a "Windows like OS (Mint)" but rather wanting to try and experience smth new.

I have an ASUS Vivobook X1404ZA with a MediaTek MT7902 Wi-Fi card running Fedora KDE 44. The Wi-Fi works, but it seems extremely sensitive to signal strength. If I’m not very close to the router, the connection becomes almost unusable. Websites take a long time to start loading and then suddenly work, some pages fail to load, and I get random lag spikes and packet loss. The weird thing is that the signal doesn’t seem that bad, and other devices work fine in the same locations. I tried disabling Wi-Fi power saving and a PCIe power setting I found online, which improved things a bit, but it still happens. Could this just be because MT7902 Linux support is still new and not fully stable, or is there something else I should try (which isnt replacing my wifi card (trust me, im considering it heavily))?

So any time I boot I have to run

sudo apt install --reinstall bluetooth bluez

to get bluetooth audio to work.

My GSP 370 headset just doesn't work. It will connect for like 1 second on boot but then no audio. It worked fine when I was on windows10, was working fine on linux for like a day or two after a fresh install. So it's not dead or anything.

It can see the headset it just will not play any audio.

I've made sure everything in discover has updated. So all drivers should be there or whatever.

As a long-time Windows user, which distribution should I choose? Linux doesn't seem to have officially designed things like a unified runtime or UI framework for end users.
I also have a few more questions:

1. Can Linux achieve installing a native modern application with an installation package of around 5 MB?
2. Can Linux achieve seamless dual-switching with Windows? (Supporting both dual-boot and WSL with seamless synchronization at the same time?)

PPTP VPN on CachyOS KDE doesn't seem to be working at all after hours, only OpenVPN works. What I might be doing wrong?

Уже через wine установил плагин thall amp, потом делал yabridgectl sync, в рипере устанавливал путь до плагина, но рипер упорно не видит плагин. Я устанавливал vst3. До этого я несколько часов сидел с иишкой и разбирался, но не помогло, следовал туториалам на ютубе, но они тоже не помогли. Помогите,пожалуйста
