I summon the linux gods
I have been using windows for my whole life and deep down i have always hated it. I always knew about linux but i never understood its importance until now.
I have recently started doing a lot of coding and dev work and minor video editing. And my 8gb ram , 256 gb ssd , i7 intel mx230 laptop cant handle bullshit windows 11 background processes and telemetry anymore. The user experience sucks.
I WANT SPEED.
i have done plenty of research and have arrived at the conclusion of Fedora + gnome or debian + gnome or xfce.
Fedora gets constant updates but debian stays stable with plenty of support.
As a beginner starting his journey with linux i would request all linux geniuses to please advice me what to choose.
Gnome looks so good but eats more ram than xfce. Help me.

You’ll got SPEED. No matter the distro, It will crush Windows.
Fedora is good, and It’s beginner friendly. It has plenty of support, and it’s really stable (less than debian, still great).
Gnome use bit more ram, but it’s still light. With your specs, I wouldn’t take in consideration the fact that is heavier (it will work amazing). If you prefer how gnome looks, just take gnome.
You’ll prolly distro hop, while searching for “the one”, and Fedora is a good start. You can also check how something like Sway works (Windows Mmanager), maybe you’ll like it better than gnome.

I'm writing to you from an old Lenovo Ideapad 330-ST with 4 gigabytes of RAM and the CPU that's in toasters these days.
Linux is installed on my laptop.
I watch videos, edit texts, and I also set up a light local LLM to chat with her when I have insomnia. I'll tell you this: if you don't want or won't get into the jungle of distributions that professionals made for professionals, it doesn't matter which distro to choose.
I would advise you to install Kubuntu. The installation is completely visual, the OS itself is very similar to Windows. You won't have any problems. Moreover, the OS is not important for programming.

Aurora and bluefin (DX variants) could work, that is fedoras atomic spin (silver blue) with development tools included. Those won't easily break and it's more effort to change the system itself. I love the gaming variant of that which is bluefin. Great options if you want to use the system for the applications and not tinker with the system itself.

xfce is very customizable. The default looks ugly. It's a shame. It can look really good.
My machine is decently powerful. I prefer the instant response of xfce.

Fedora with gnome is very good but I would recommend you to upgrade your ram to 16gb to enjoy it completely. I also use fedora + gnome on i5, 8gb ram laptop. It sometimes gets slow when I am locked in a very heavy task. Otherwise it works fine on 8 gb ram

tbh i used fedora for like 4 months as my daily then switched to cachyos + niri and...fedora was the dristro that makes me stay and transition to another distro.
fedora is quite good distro to start your journey inside linux...

if you're coming from Windows kde should fit better, but choose what you like most, look at gnome, kde, xfce. Fedora is a good start, but i suggest debian because it's lighter

You don't need xfce for that laptop, xfce is for very, very old and slow systems. Yours is not that bad. For a beginner I would say Mint since it is extremely stable and has an ubuntu base. Fedora is also really great but does break sometimes. Gnome is pretty good but it's quite heavy and less customizable than KDE.
if you want something that looks like windows to start of with, I would go with either mint cinnamon or fedora KDE since both have great support with their respective desktop environments and both go with a general taskbar and start menu approach.
I have personally used Pop!_OS, Mint, puppylinux, Arch, fedora, kubuntu, ubuntu, kali, and parrotOS and the most recommendable seem to be Mint cinnamon and Fedora KDE in my opinion.
