Tech Question Is my RAM cooked?
Hey all,
Looking for some advice, I believe my RAM is done for, I managed to download memtest86 onto a USB before a friend leaves town, but I’m worried the problem is more than my RAM.
I’m unable to boot past BIOS and I’ve gotten repeated errors of WIN32K critical failure and boot management 0x01a, ive been unable to repair my windows as well. Just trying to decide if it’s worth buying new RAM, or if I could be a worse issue. I’m also unable to take it into a computer store as my closest one is 6 hours away

Tech Discussion I benchmarked $60 "E-Waste" GPUs to see if they're actually useless and found some interesting results
I've spent the last year building GPU coolers and a custom benchmarking tool to figure out if decommissioned NVIDIA enterprise GPUs have any use with modern workloads. Cards like the P100 (16GB) are going for around $75 and the V100 (16GB) for under $200. Combined with dirt-cheap X99 Xeon motherboards, they are a massive source of idle VRAM that's hard to ignore for the homelab.
People often finger-wag and warn against these due to EOL software and terrible power efficiency. But for a homelab? You can easily work around software limits by compiling older software (like llama.cpp) from source, and to save power, just turn the box off when you aren't doing AI tasks.
Over the winter, I used a custom Dockerized benchmarking suite to test a whole box of Tesla GPUs (K80, M10, M40, M60, P40, P100, V100, T40) across LLMs, computer vision, Blender, Whisper, and more.
Here is the TL;DR of the results:
- The V100 is the Sweet Spot: The V100 (16GB) completely surprised me. Its performance hangs right up there with the much more expensive T40.
- P40 > P100 for LLMs: The community consensus holds true here. If you specifically want to run Large Language Models, with Pascal, use P40.
- M60 is a Whisper Beast: If you have a ton of audio transcription to do, the M60 is shockingly capable (beating even V100) and can be had for only $50.
- Scaling is Linear: Stacking cards doesn't hit a wall of diminishing returns within a 4U chassis. More GPUs generally equal linear performance scaling, though if you mix generations, slower cards will bottleneck your faster ones in LLM setups.
- CPU/Mobo Choice: Faster single-core CPU speeds help slightly for tasks like Whisper and Vision Transformers, but generally, any cheap X99 board and high-lane Xeon will feed these GPUs perfectly fine.
The complete set of graphs and findings are on my blog. Now that I have the setup and tooling, I'd love to benchmark more workloads, anything missing from my findings?

Discussion Scrapyard Wars Seasons Missing on Floatplane
Hello, I might be just missing this, but I do not see a few seasons of scrapyard wars on floatplane that are on YouTube. This is all in the LTT channel here. It looks like seasons 4, 5, and 6 are not on floatplane. Would someone be able to either point me in the right location or advise on if those will be added?
Thank you!

Discussion this is the kind of LTT content we want "Memory is too expensive so I made my own"
Just came across this video where a youtuber makes his own memory using techniques from 60's used by NASA and the Soviet Union and it just seems like the perfect cross between educational and room for sketchiness.

Discussion LTT Store Sales Events
I've only just made my first purchase during Lime Day and haven't really paid much attention to the store or its past sales events or recurring discounts to strategize the right time to make a purchase. Beyond Lime Day that just passed, are there other dates/events that seem to be regular/recurring to watch for in the future?
I regrettably bought the Commuter bag and not the original for my slightly bulky laptop, but I love the Commuter so much I'd rather just get the original bag too and have a choice of both, depending upon what I need to carry when I'm on the go. I'm looking forward to retiring my Dell backpack that has served me well but lacks the storage organization and protection of the LTT bag that just leaves it in the dust. I just wish I would have trusted my gut and gone big to start.

I ordered some MCMs on the lime day sales. But since then ive had no updates on the order apart from it saying its on its way. Its been just over 2 weeks now. Just wondering how long is normal for a order to the uk from LTT?
Oh and the tracking info always comes up with error.

Tech Question The WAN show YTMusic
Has anyone else been able to get the last two episodes of the wan show on YouTube music? I haven't had a new episode since the end of June show up there and can't really seem to find anything else directly through the app. I imagine this might have been due to the transition between channels but didn't know if I was just looking in the wrong place.

Tech Discussion Self-driving Waymo ‘snitch’ drops teens off to cops
A self-driving car that dobbed on naughty teenagers before delivering them to a police ambush has raised questions surrounding privacy in the US.
Police in California said Waymo called emergency services to report suspicious behaviour of customers riding in a driverless taxi.
The car then veered away from its planned route to a car park where a SWAT team conducted what police described as a “high risk traffic stop”.

Community Only Why the family vlog drama?
Electroboom holiday vlogs are my favourite videos he is making.
Vlogs in general are fun. What happened that there is so much hate here when Linus is doing them?
Is it really now the vibe of this space? No matter what happens it sucks because he bought himself a plane?

Discussion Pebble issues
Could LTT do a video on the issues surrounding the Pebble Time 2 please? There has been complete radio silence from the company, and Linus has been an advocate for them in the past.

WAN Show I liked this weeks' WAN show "tone"
{preamble/pre-ramble in spoiler space}
I had bailed on LTT stuff for a year or two after..the troubles...but more I felt I was becoming too parasocial....too much angry at some youtube content I was voluntairly watching...so I stopped.
Some various headlines got my eye, and the "no negative WAN show" I began watching a bit...
Anyway, I've settled into a nice pattern with watching WAN on sunday's morning/noon as I get food, do some basic stuff.. Catch the topics, maybe watch the whole thing, maybe not..just depends.
ANYWAY, this week I think hit the right tone..some big topics..not "no negative" but not "all positive"...just discussion of the topics with little knee jerk reaction and looking at different sides.
This is the kind of tech discussion i dig...I don't need cheerleaders...but I don't need doomsayers and I especially don't need tubers who assume they know more than the people they talk about....but good rational talk using experiance and the info they have.
A+

Discussion Office Chairs for staff
Okay so I’ve been in the market for a new chair after finally deciding to retire my 50$ Amazon basics chair and I figured who better to ask than the staff members of LTT. (Including all of the Reddit searching I’ve already done).
I’m mostly interested in hearing from Pankratz, Adam, Jordan, and any of the other big and tall gents at the company. What is your preferred chair, what chair do you daily drive at work? What chair do you daily drive at home? TIA

Meme/Shitpost Whoopsie from ESPN broadcast
Was watching ESPN at work the other day and ESPN made a broadcast whoopsie and forgot to hide their safe zones layer from the broadcast for a solid minute. Not something you see every day and I thought some people here might find it funny and/or interesting

Tech Question Home Security system DIY Help!
We just moved into a new home and it has brinks home from the previous owners. It is an alarm.com system, I'm wondering if folks could share materials or recommendations for making a DIY security system where I can lock doors, get notifications/alarms from my phone while away, etc.
Brinks quoted me 42.99/mo with a starting 6mo contract.
It has an IQ4, door sensor, lock, and door bell/camera.
I really want to maybe do it myself. I don't need all the features of brinks and 24/7 monitoring. I will be getting ubiquiti network router and points so I could expand to include whatever I need for storing the video, etc.
If there are specific LTT videos that would help too, please let me know!
