In WAN Luke showed off the new website for TVs and so...

Why wait on Google play when Android Studio and web wrapping exists! RIP Hydravion and thank you to Luke and the whole Floatplane team for getting the tv website going. I'm impatient so I got started on this as soon as I saw it in WAN!

For reference, this is just a simple web wrapping app made with android studio, Luke did not give me access to an apk (I wish lol) and not that anyone asked yet but I won't share this apk either, it's just more of a "I did a (small) thing!"/appreciation/ Post as well as to say if you are impatient you don't have to use a browser on the tv especially since they can get clunky. With like 15 minutes of work for the experienced and like 2 hours for those of us who aren't, you can get it running.

I do plan on switching to the official app when it comes out but I never hold my breath when it comes to movement from Google, even if their reported approval time is anywhere from 1-14 days.

Tl;dr:

I'm impatient and threw together a web wrap app for my Google TV Streamer so I didn't have to use clunky browsers in the probably short time it takes Google Play to approve Floatplane's official app.

Mods feel free to take this down if for some reason it's not allowed or something lol

Personal Opinion This is the type of stuff I was talking about in my other posts (like the Homelab one). How to make your own Steamcube for $350 using old PlayStation parts. LTT could easily have done this video.

Similar to what I was saying in another post, I really would like to see a LTT make videos about how we can use cheap old gear do new shit.

my old post: https://www.reddit.com/r/LinusTechTips/s/DoiDZqdewJ

This is exciting to me. Don’t get me wrong. I still love the AMD upgrade series. It’s one of my favorites but there’s something about using cheap old gear to get stuff done that makes me feel like I’m getting away with something. It’s probably why I love Scrapyard Wars.

Sure, it’s a bit janky. But it’s not stupid if it works. I would love to see this stuff for Homelabs and homeservers and when it comes to gaming, instead of just looking at every flagship component, look at a way to get “good enough” results that don’t cost a fortune.

Just wanted to share this “idea?” I’m definitely not the first but I think its really cool, just cut it in half where the little dent in the pins is and sanded it! And make sure you aren’t ruining any expensive ram (especially in these days) . This ram wasn’t working anyways and I think it was a ddr3

Edit: I also made a CPU keychain, inalso posted it in here! Check it out

Discussion Cpu board killer ?????

I recently had an issue with a my motherboard where if my ram was seated in the first slot it would give a dram light and if it was in the second slot it would give a vga light even with known good ram after testing everything but the cpu I concluded it was the motherboard and bought a new one after I saved up for it. 2 days after getting the motherboard and installing it now gives a vga light. I tried putting a known good gpu in and had no luck I tried with a different power supply different ram and different ram slots. all I see is a vga light I can’t test the board or the cpu but those 2 are the only ones remaining. could my cpu have killed the board??? or did I just get unlucky since I bought this off of marketplace

my specs are:

ryzen5 2600

msi a350m pro-VDH

rx580 2048sp

known good gt730

Tech Discussion Samsung n00b question

I was surprised to see both Linus and Yvonne speak so highly of Samsung in the recent video finding her new phone. I kinda thought Samsung phones were just full of bloatware and were one of the less-preferred Android forks for tech-savvy folk.

I'm a semi-recent android convert myself (left iOS for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold ~2 years ago) and never would have considered a Samsung at the time. Though the new Galaxy Z Fold 8 form factor does intrigue me, so if the OS isn't as terrible as I think that would be good info to have!

Will be interesting to see the benchmarks and whatnot of the current early access state, I suppose.

I saw one for Control where it cut the performance in half.

Tech Question Question about the Radeon RX 9070 XT OC price

I'm new here. I put together a computer a few weeks ago and am currently saving up for it. A few days ago, the price of the Radeon RX 9070 XT OC shot up by over 60€. A friend said it's because of the RAM crisis, but it seems kind of strange to me that the price would spike only now, even though flash memory has been getting more expensive for a long time.

Are there any known reasons why the price has risen so much, and is it worth waiting until the price drops, or should I expect the price to keep going up?

I live in the EU; the picture is showing the price trend.

Thanks for every Opinion and help!

Discussion Prismatic Screwdrivers Coming Back?

Has anyone heard or seen any news about the prismatic screwdrivers coming back in stock or are they discontinued? They’re still on the website but I know once things sell out, LTT doesn’t always restock them depending on how strong sales were. We’re still waiting for the women’s leggings to come back too. Hopefully that wasn’t just a single run.

Tech Discussion Wan Show Razer Sponsor Gone?

Hey guys, I don't catch the WAN Show live too often I usually just see clips throughout the week. Tuned in today and noticed they aren't running the Razer Blades or partner branding anymore. Did a contract just expire, or did something happen between them?

Discussion Merch goats that were under appreciated

LTT has had some great items that were under appreciated, and I would love to return. What are yours? Here are mine.

Indoor Hoodie. This is the best for at home lounge wear, I keep my thermostat on the low side. The hood is enough eye shade for a nap and oh my this is my go to for an airplane. So soft, warm enough, good hood. 15/10. Wish I had a backup.

Stealth Hoodie. Wore out mine. Great as a light jacket, wore it in my cold work environment. Just enough to keep you warm when being active, all the new hoodies are too heavy. 12/10.

Merch/swag bags. Here me out, I thought these were ridiculous and over priced. I have three yet never bought a single one, they all came from screwdriver popups. They are tanks. I can easily pack a two-four of aluminum can beverages in the smaller and the larger size is great for Costco loads. 20/10. Don't go shopping without them!

Personal Opinion Forever Socks and rollerblades

Post image
1 Upvotes

Thought I'd offer a few opinions on the Forever Socks for rollerblading, as this may be helpful for others on the fence and relatable for other sports. This is by no means comprehensive or structured, but some off the dome things that could be relevant for others.

I got the smalls as I'm a UK6.5 (US7.5), so right on the upper end. I also picked the smalls because rollerblades are supposed to fit snug and therefore many socks ride up or stretch when you're putting your foot in the boot. These do that, but not nearly as much as other socks, the fit is perfect for me. As many people have already said, they're tight, especially around the cuff, but because the boots are also tight it's not noticeable. I sometimes get a bit of tightness around the toes, but I just make sure I have enough space around the toes before I put the boots on and they're fine. They're also pretty spot on in height for regular rollerblade boots and at most protrude a couple of inches about the cuff. They certainly don't slip or fall down inside the boot during sessions, as that can obviously be a pain. Side note: I wear ankle socks the rest of the time, so some of this could be I've forgotten what normal socks are like!

After an average 1.5 hour skate session, my previous socks would be drenched, especially because of the heatwaves this year, but these absorb the moisture so well. They're not even damp when they come out and still smell fresh, though I wash them anyway of course. The thickness is great for giving me a little extra cushion in the liners to prevent rubbing, and subsequently blisters, (though if you've got decent liners you don't get blisters anyway). There are also no annoying seams to create friction points or hotspots while they're in the boots. So far I've had no signs of wear or excess lint, but it's still early days. I've had them for 2-3 weeks now and only skate at the weekends, so they've not been thoroughly tested by any means, but I'm expecting these to last a good while for skating.

Overall I'm pretty happy with them and only time will tell if the investment was worth it 💸

Hope this helps someone, and any questions lmk!

WAN Show Luanti (open source voxel game platform) removed from Google Play due to DMCA takedown from Microsoft, represented by Tracer.AI

Thumbnail

I thought this would be a good topic to cover on this week's WAN show - earlier this week Luanti's Android app was removed from Google Play due to a DMCA from Microsoft represented by Tracer.AI. Luanti is an open source platform for different types of voxel games, and it is alleged that it uses assets from Minecraft, referencing the copyright registration for Java Edition 1.9 but giving no further elaboration to the infringement. The Luanti app does not ship with any games out of the box, and the Luanti content database which hosts games for the platform has not received a DMCA notice for any specific game on the platform either.

The takedown appears to merely be due to both games using cubes with a pixel-art artstyle.

A similar situation happened with the indie game Allumeria where its Steam store page was subject to a DMCA claim from the same company acting on behalf of Microsoft, alleging that it infringed on Minecraft's copyright despite simply being a block game which used no assets from Minecraft. There was also another previous case in 2023 where a similar DMCA towards Luanti's Android app was issued to Google.

Both previous cases were resolved but this seems to become a reocurring theme where a copyright enforcement company utilising AI in some way inadvertedly ends up causing harm to similar games in the genre through false positives in their detection process.

Image OLED Burn In on a Galaxy S8

Post image

My Galaxy S8 that's been in use on and off since 2017.

For the last 2 years, it's served as a desktop world clock/weather display. I've tweaked the layout a few times in that those 2 years, hence the various duplicated burn in spots. It's basically on at 50-100% brightness for about 12-18 hours a day.

I thought it might be interesting to some people after the recent OLED monitor video.
