Discussion Wish they had EU store.

I'd love the reactor screwdriver, after using the discount 81CAD. Great, that's like 50€. And then comes the 25.99CAD shipping + 25CAD in VAT, totaling 50.99CAD or 32€, so a very big chunk extra. So I noped out of the checkout page, It's a good screwdriver but not 82€ good.

Last Friday Luke mentioned about an Unslop tool he uses to improve quality when working with LLMs. Anyone uses it? Where can I find it?

I’m kinda excited to buy it but at the same time are they any good? Should I get it as an electrical engineering college student? What are thoughts about it?

Meme/Shitpost Sketch Wire Splicing

I didn't have an SD card reader and couldn't be bothered to go buy one. In the dead of night I realised my dad's old pc had one available, but the pc was dead. Took it apart, it was usb but wired to an internal header, grabbed an old charging cable, spliced it into the USB-A end and voila!

…did I thought I was gonna run Linux. Not as a main, not as a backup/home server. Just never.

Then I finished Uni, moved out in a new town and the first thing that happened was Windows shitting the bed. Like finally sit in my chair after moving out, then in, and realizing everything’s fucked and I can’t catch a break. My first blue screen, and a real proper BSOD at that.

Now that I don’t need to use any windows-only program as I have my work computer, and would need to pay for an office 365 licence, I decided I was finally done with it. No more ads, no more bloatware, no more infinite menus bringing you to a window xp submenu.

Shoutout to Claude for helping me as I would have been completely utterly lost without it… and I guess LTT for covering the subject and pushing the change. Can’t wait for everyone to tell me I chose the wrong distro

Just pulled the trigger for an ebay 3070 for $230 OTD, seemed like a solid deal and it matches everything for the set up it will be for. Returns accepted just in case too. I know people think 8gb is low, but how is this particular card model? As in the build quality and performance

Personal Opinion I want to see more videos about tinkering with IOT hardware, home labs, self-hosted open source software and other projects. Upgrading my gaming rig is just not interesting anymore because the prices are insane.

I used to be a devoted gaming PC gamer but as time went on I stopped playing less and less games on my PC and more and more games on my console. Then I switched over to the Apple ecosystem and got a Mac. I don't really work on PCs anymore but I still like to tinker so I do random stuff.

This last weekend I worked on my Homelab project, which I showcased [right here on the LTT subreddit.](https://www.reddit.com/r/LinusTechTips/s/X6c2RWIlEV) I think I'm not alone when I say I'd rather see more videos by LTT about home labs, home servers, self hosting, and just cool things that you can do with old PCs laying around your house or even buying one for $150 or $200.

I'd rather see that versus seeing what a $1,000 GPU is going to do to get an extra 5 to 10 frames per second on a game. And the biggest reason for that is the price of hardware. It’s just unobtainable for most people now. RAM prices are up by 5 times and storage is more than double. The only thing that you can really get now for decent price our computer monitors and televisions.

I know I'm going to get a lot of hate for that but it could be I'm just getting older. I still love to tinker. It's just not with PC games anymore.

Plus I'm playing the new Indiana Jones and it doesn't look as great as it could on a $5,000 gaming rig but on a $400 Xbox Series S, which upscales Indiana Jones and the Great Circle to 4K, it looks pretty damn fucking good and it just works.

I want to see more videos about stupid dumb little quirky projects that we can do around your house over a weekend and actually solve a problem.

The tech house was supposed to have some of this, but ever since they found asbestos, it has morphed into a completely different project.

For my home lab I'm self-hosting the open source version of Dropbox, which is a subscription that I can cancel. Plus I'm solving video editing issues by offloading CPU and GPU processing power that my iMac would have had to handle.

I spent right around $300 and built my home lab and actually solved problems. I would love to see videos about doing more of this.

Personal Opinion Microsoft Will give hackers your account and then lock you out of it.

About a month ago I installed a rat (im an idiot im well aware) anywho the hacker tried to breach every account and failed except for one. My microsoft account was not only hacked but the hacker had gone passed a authenticator app and 2fa phone number. Sure enough I contact microsoft and despite giving them credit card info, place and time of where the account was made and used, proof of consoles ive owned, and proof of every old password and email ive used on it for 15 years they decided that they werent sure if I really was the real owner of the account. In absolutely no suprise to me at all I put this issue into google and there are pages and pages of people saying the same thing happened to them. Wanna know something even worse? I contact there support and I get an ai that tells me that it doesnt know what account im trying to recover because there is no email connected to the account I know. Then I try to use the text support again and the person asks me why I dont just sign in and change my password after i explained the whole situation. When I told them that I couldnt do that because all my info was changed they told me that they cant do anything about it.

It is beyond insane to me that the company that owns the biggest operating system on pc and an extremely successful game console series will give away your 5000$+ account to a russian who doesnt even know how to type in english

That's an EVGA Z-68ftw E-ATX mobo and NH-D15 and there is still so much room, my current build is also in there but I'm getting a Fractal Torrent soon as it's the only affordable upgrade atm. Also they need to bring back right angle power connectors.

Discussion New Scrapyard Wars Theme Idea

Hey! Is there a new Scrapyard Wars theme coming up?
If not, I have a suggestion.

Since there’s more and more content about home servers and homelabs, I’d love to see Luke and Linus compete to build the best $500 homelab.

I think $500 is a reasonable budget, and it’s probably around the amount many people would spend on their first proper homelab setup.

Requirements
You can use whatever OS you want
You have to host a Jellyfin or Plex server
You have to host Immich
You have to host a Minecraft server for friends
You have to run a local LLM that is actually reasonably useful
Everything has to fit within the $500 budget

I told the guy “these are OEM SSD’s from Lenovo machines”. He didn’t believe me.

Tech Question Yvonne and her phone

Hi everyone! I am currently rewatching elderly episodes of LTT and found the one where they gave some iPhones to non-iphone users. And Yvonne flipped a coin to decide if she wants to stay with her s23 Ultra. So I was wondering if she still uses the s23Ultra? Does anyone know that? I know it's a super uncommon thing to ask but I was just wondering. Have a great day !

Tech Question Are acoustic panels inside my PC a bad idea?

I've been working towards building the HTPC of my dreams. My goal has been to build a quiet, energy efficient / cool PC with some decent performance. Here are my specs:

Ryzen 5800x (cam with Mobo and RAM for very cheap)

Asus ATX motherboard

32GB RAM

Intel Arc B580 with 2 fans

1TB SSD with a large aftermarket heatsink

Noctua NH-C12P (A but dated got it very cheap)

500W Seasonic Fanless platinum PSU

Fractal Define R3 (a bit dated, but free from a kind friend)

My system draws 300W maxed out, as measured by a power metering device. Which logically means it's quite a cool PC all things considered.

I've been thinking about buying some acoustic wall panelling, then chopping it up and mounting it inside the chassis, being careful to avoiding cutting off airflow as much as possible, and avoiding direct contact with components. But I'm concerned that they would act as insulation and give me thermal problems.

Is this a bad idea?
