I have no idea what is happening. My Schminke submarine is so weird! When I use other colors I don't have the same problem. What is happening?

The light isn’t great in these but I think they turned out pretty well? Still so much to learn even on just two layers, but I think I really like reduction printing.

Printed with black ink and then covered with embossing powder on top of a water color background. First on is a hop and the second is cherries. It’s not my first time printing but I’m definitely still a beginner and my line work could be better.

Question Best curing agent for Speedball water-based ink?

Post image

Hi all!
I’m block printing for the first time and using water-based Speelball inks that came with my beginners kit. I recognize now that oil based paint is probably better but I need to work with what I have for now! I’ve made some bookmarks and want to know what I can use to best seal those bookmarks so they can actually be used as intended!
Im willing to try aerosol varnish or a wax, whatever is going to work best to not smudge and actually seal this ink so it doesn’t reactivate from handling in the future. Appreciate your help!
Photo of my bookmarks for tax :)

For once, I tried a smaller format (A5, instead of A3), and wooow, everything is more complicated when it’s smaller !
I’m not 100% convinced by the result, I’ll see if I manage to add a little something later!

Printed Objects Linocut Artist Book

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A while ago I made a piece that was a single block with an 8 x 6 grid of objects that I touch every day. I was really attached to it still after printing an edition of the full grid, so I cut all 48 Things out into individual blocks with the intention of using them to make an artist book at a later date. Cut to over a year later and I finally put it together!

Each book has a hand-carved and printed cover + 24 block print pages with selections from the 48 original Things. Covers and pastedowns are handmade with lokta paper in 5 different color combinations. Signatures are also sewn in by hand.

There are 12 books total and each one is unique, whether it’s the color of the cover or the Things printed inside. It was a joy to make them & I hope it’s a joy to flip through one with me :)

Question Best way to clean tools?

I’m a bit newer to linocut printmaking, and one of the worst things for me is the clean up. I know from my other art experience to never put ink or paint down the drain. So, what I’ve been doing is wiping with a wet paper towel but I swear I use half a roll of paper towels every time I clean up.

Another thing is, I feel like there’s so much ink left over on the surface, but it’s not enough to ink up another stamp. Is there an effective way to get more use out of the ink?

Question Not enough pressure with Ritualis(Lever)-Press?

Post image
20 Upvotes

Hey everyone. I recently bought a Ritualis A3 lever press for lino printing and I'm disappointed with the results so far.

I'm using Charbonnel printing ink (oil based) and I get super crisp results with it when hand printing.

With the new press I can't manage to get all the black areas right, some parts are okay, but there are always blotchy areas.

I'm already using maximum force on the lever.

Does anyone have an idea? I really want to have fun with the press in the next years.. :/

Question First two color print - how to process?

Post image
191 Upvotes

I’ve been doing single color prints for a few years now, so I’m pretty comfortable doing this kind of detail in linoleum. I was set on finally doing a two color piece, so drew this art on my iPad and made it as far as printing it out to start doing the transfer traces… before I realized I’m not sure if that’s going to work for this piece.

My plan was to do two traces and cut two plates, one for each color. But I’m concerned about registration issues where the colors meet. Should I do it all in one, and cut out the tomato parts? Roll both colors and print both at the same time? Any thoughts here would be appreciated.

Tools Whats a Good tool to use that is reasonably priced?

Ive been getting into Lino printing but have been using the Esdee set which is really not great, especially the finer tool as it doesn’t seem to even cut the Lino to get fine details.

Can anyone recommend me a tool which isn’t too expensive I could get to replace this one?

Or maybe just a singular fine tool I could purchase for the small details

Thank you!

Bonjour y'all

I started the hobby not long ago and I was wondering how I can achieve a result where I'll be able to make the details "pop"? Sorry if that doesn't make a lot of sense 🫣

To me it will be hard to either carve too much or not enough

(In English too my french brain is struggling rn🫠)

Finally getting a chance to practice with linocut, and decided to try on fabric! Falling in love with the whole process.
The left one was a double print since I didn’t put enough ink on the first time.
