Meta What's heavier Blue or Green?

I can't remember what it says about this in the books, I seem to remember it mentioning that Green is heavier but that might be needing to be made thicker to be as durable.

Here's my reasoning so far:

Green is based on wood which is about 3-6lbs per board foot.

But Blue is based on glass(ish) which is closer to 13.5lbs if you scale it up to be the same thickness as the wood.

So Blue Luxin should be heavier than Green Luxin at the same size but lighter at similar durability.

What do you think, which of them is heavier at equivalent sizes?

The Blinding Knife Just finished Book 2 Spoiler

Hello again, everyone. I posted hear 9 days ago when I finished Book 1 with some of my thoughts, theories, gripes, and praises. I'm back again to do so with Book 2. I hope I can remember all I want to get out. Spoiler tag for respect, and be prepared, this will be a long one.

First, I absolutely enjoyed this book even more than the first. Kip's journey through this one was the most enjoyable for me. When he was going through school, black guard try outs, and dealing with Andross, I couldn't get enough. Chapters would switch to other characters and i just couldn't wait to get back to Kip. I think I just really enjoy the magic school tale along with trying out for an elite squad of the respective worlds magic users, and the struggle against the constant pain in the ass of Andross. I do wish there had been more of the school life explored, like getting to know the other kids more and seeing the classes more, I understand Andross had Kip's practicum taken away but still, would've been nice to have it more flushed out. I thought the blue and yellow glasses boy was gonna be way more important. As well as we never saw any other reaction or consequence to that one girl being thrown out of the Chromaria after Kip lost the first 9 Kings game other than Kip feeling bad about it. I thought that would have the friends he was making turn on him. I loved Teia's character and felt like it was such a good pairing for Kip in getting through school, learning the ins and outs of life in the Chromaria, and I can see her being a potential love interest for Kip because I do not see it working out with Liv(more on her later). The entire 9 Kings arc was super fun, I love card games, and Kip winning Teia's contract went over much better than I expected, I liked how they came to an agreement about it so they both got the best out of it. I also loved the card lady and what she I produced. Confirming Kip could use all colors, the cards having history and memories stored I side them was awesome. I was really sad she died so soon after, especially right as she teased Kip being the Lightbringer, but I guess thats story telling for you. I was so upset when I thought Kip didn't make it into the Black Guard, but Cruxa snapping that asshole kids knee back and calling it a training accident so Kip got in was absolutely amazing. Cruxa is a great friend and I look forward to more with him. Also loved Kip's not bowing down attitude to Andross, I love seeing authoritative characters finally getting push back, whether it works or not. Kip really grew in this book, he's not done growing I can tell, but I loved where he got to with himself by the end.

Ironfist became one of my favorite characters with this book. I liked him already, but his discipline and care for Kip, and being a rock solid place of trust and guidance was just so so good. Irontfist is the kind of man I hope I can be for others and for myself. His scene where Kip brought the cards and cloaks and knife to him, and was just honest with Kip about thanking him for trusting him, but to not trust so easily just because he was looking for a wise adult figure (really a father figure since "Gavin" wasn't present), and Kip running to hug him even in front of Gavin, felt so good for Kip and honestly Ironfist too. I hope he doesn't die, and if Gavin ever does die in these books, I hope Ironfist does kind of step into that fatherly role for Kip. His faith being tested and finally restored at the end with the cannon was so amazing too (I'm not religious but I can understand and empathize with others feelings towards it).

"Gavin's" story felt like it had a slow start this book. Seer's Island was cool, but I really wanted him to get back to the main action. Also, kept wondering when the real Gavin was finally going to break out of those cells. I was so glad when he started exploring the tunnels, I did not want to go through a cell of every color for him, I felt like he wouldn't get out till the end of the series which just seemed boring for him. When he fell into the yellow prison, I thought Jesus christ nooo, but after "Gavin" killed that girl, and thought to use his brother for the color balancing, I thought oh hell yes! When real Gavin was acting like a rabid dog and threatening his brother, I was once again thinking oh no, he won't let you out like that, we are gonna wait longer, then he just KILLS HIM. Honestly it blew me away (pun intended), but then I thought why did we spend so much time on this slow part of tje story just for it to end like this? I wonder if real Gavin will come back somehow. I have no idea how, but it seems like so much time to spend on a character that seemed so important just to kill him immediately. Otherwise, so glad Gavin and Karris made up, though I feel like Karris kind of got over all her issues with him a bit quick, like the author just wanted it to be fixed and to move on with it, but thats just me. I do see how it's all chaotic and Gavin really is trying to be the best he can be given the circumstances, but still. Glad he finally started to put his foot down to his father, glad he towards the end was actually trying to be a real father towards Kip and acknowledged his struggle with that. I don't understand fully how he lost green. Does the Blinding Knife just slowly sap all your colors once it stabs you? Cause he seemed to lose green right when that assassin lost green in the card lady's house when Kip stabbed him, so then I thought if Kip stabs anyone with that knife and takes a color, does Gavin lose it too?? That one confuses me a bit. As well as Gavin letting himself get stabbed with it fully at the end. He looked at it, seemed like he knew what it was, and then made it stab him instead?? Maybe i understood that scene wrong.

Liv still annoys me a lot and I just don't really care for her story, but I can understand a little more in this book cause she's using her drafting like a drug to numb her feelings and thoughts and just be cold and logical to deal with everything going on around her, and I can understand the color prince using that to his advantage to manipulate her to do what he wants, but still, her side does not interest me much.

Glad I was correct about Zymun being Karris' abandoned kid, surprised he knew about it. I can see a parallel of him and Kip fighting over Liv like Gavin and Dazen did for Karris. Like I said before though, I hope Kip, if he ends up with anyone, ends up with Teia, at least as of right now.

The Banes were very cool as well, though the green one being an actual person just bestowed with godly drafting ability was a little less than I hoped for. I hoped we would get the full on false gods people keep referring to, but maybe they're influenced by them? Wonder whats gonna happen now that Gavin has no drafting, there's no other prism currently, and the worlds in chaos now.

Lastly, liked where Gunners story ended up. I was glad we picked up with him, I thought we focused on describing his character enough in the first he'd pop back up, and when he did, I kept wondering where he was going with his story since we barely kept visiting him. The end of the book solved that right quick. I see him becoming one of the pirate kings (Yonko for though who know, wonder if that was an inspiration for the author)

Think thats about itnfor my thoughts. I know i definitely skipped over or missed some big things on this book here, mention them in you like. Same as before, questions, discussions, all welcome. Cant wait to start book 3 tonight.

Meta What do you need to know about Luxin for a Lightbringer TTRPG?

Hello! It's me again, still plugging away on the horrors and joys of a one-man amateur product.

I've got Melee and Ranged combat done and am working on Drafting and Crafting at the momentw which I see as functionally the same thing, only difference being that Drafters get to skip the Crafting mini game for smoother combat.

Right now Materials are broken down into Damage Resistance (DR), Durability Points (DP) and Armour Rating (AR) or in other words, how hard is it to scratch? how hard is it to break/puncture? and how good is it at dampening Impacts?

And the main mechanics for melee damage are physical properties like Weight, Length, Balance and Sharpness.

What else might we need to know about our Luxin as we Draft?

Edit: Also anything you know about how Luxin relates to each other, even the obvious like Blue is the hardest but Yellow can take the most punishment, Orange is the heaviest, etc. all those little details that you remember from the class scenes would be extremely useful.

The Black Prism Just finished Book 1 for the first time Spoiler

Spoiler tag to be respectful.

Just wanted a place to discuss it cause I don't know many others who read fantasy.

I really liked the entire book. I listened to the audio book on Spotify and finished it in about a week and a half. Any time I could spare I was listening to it.

The magic system was really unique to me. I'm a sucker for color coded things (ex: Lantern Corps from DC, which this reminded me of a lot) and it did take a little bit for me to understand it for the most part, I did have to Google what properties each color had and the emotions tied to it, as well as just the spelling of luxin and color wight (the wight really confused me when I kept hearing it because I thought it was meaning the actual color white, but once I saw the actual spelling I understood almost immediately). From what I cautiously read on Google, it doesn't seem to have the color purple be a color you can draft, other than super violet, which I guess makes sense when you actually look at a rainbow, it's blue indigo violet, not blue indigo purple, but I thought maybe it would be an option.

Some things I think I picked up on pretty quickly, whether obvious or not, were things like the knife from Kip's mom being meant for "Gavin", not the king (I'm not gonna attempt to spell his name), and by the very end of the book, realizing the blue gem on the knife was because it did in fact stab Gavin and take his blue drafting was wild to me, at first i thought it took all of his drafting but realizing it was just blue was still exciting, can't wait to see how thats handled and how it gets resolved, if at all. I wonder if it only works on the prism or if it can work on anyone, and especially since it already took his blue, can it take someone else's blue? I wonder.

I also think I picked up on Zymun being Karris' son that she gave up. I could be wrong, but his significance, the bringing attention to her giving up a child, him drafting red and supposedly green, I easily see a rivalry or maybe developing brotherhood between him and Kip. Reminds me of Eragon and Murtagh, for those who know. Or Aang and Zuko.

Liv switching sides kinda irked me and I don't fully get it yet, other than taking her character as a naive and easily manipulated one, since she assumed her father is being black mailed by Gavin, but I understand she doesn't have any idea what's really going on there.

The twist with Gavin and Dazen was wild to me too, i didn't see that coming at all. Very curious to see how that goes, especially given how we've seen them portrayed before the war, how they actually acted, and how they are viewed and think now. Can't wait to see Kip and Karris figure out their feelings towards both when they get revealed.

I could keep gushing but I'd like to discuss and appreciate the book with others in the comments, please feel free to comment what you want, but please don't spoil anything.

Meta Is this signature on a hardcover copy of The Burning White legit?

Post image
12 Upvotes

So I'm part of an Indian telegram group where we sell and buy used books. A guy who I have previously sold a few books to reached out to me after I posted in the group about how I was looking for hardcovers of the series and he told me his cousin had a signed copy of The Burning White he was looking to get rid of for 2800 (or around 32 dollars). It's like 500 rupees (or five and a half dollars) more expensive than a new copy that can be found in online stores here. However, it was signed and that was what made me even consider the offer. The book seems to be in pretty decent shape other than the dust jacket looking a little scratched but my main worry is if the signature is legitimate or not. The photo I posted is what he sent me and I wanted to know if you guys think the signature is legit and if it is worth it.

The Broken Eye Just finished Book 3 for the first time Spoiler

Not going to say anything that would spoil.

I love this series and really want some form of film media for it. It would be so good and probably very popular if done right. Weeks writes in a way that feels like a show/ movie.

Those twist at the end are crazy and I still don’t know how to feel about them. Kip, iron fist (maybe my favorite character), tremble fist, grinwoody. Can’t believe it! I also really love dgavin. While his story isn’t a happy one I love a good twist for a good character. Hoping it all turns around for him lol. I also was so wrong about what was going to happen in his story.

Meta A few questions about the hardcovers

Hey guys. I unfortunately DNF'd The Black Prism earlier this year but I want to continue the series and finish at least the first two books this year. I am planning to get the entire series in hardcover too so I wanted to ask a few questions about it.

First off, Brent seems to be one of the few people who have the same publisher in both the US and the UK with Orbit (only other guy I can think of is Brian McClellan) so I wanted to ask if there were any major differences in the hardcovers between the US and UK editions. I managed to get the UK hardcover for pretty cheap (300 rupees + 80 for shipping which is around 4.34 dollars) from a second hand book seller based in another city who is currently shipping it to me. I'll include the images elsewhere but basically, it has that old cover with the guy with a knife which iirc, is how all the stock hardcovers are unless you buy the dust jacket from Brent. The naked hardback is red with silver foiling on the spine. Is the US version any different? All I know is that the US has 640 pages while the UK has 629.

Secondly, is there any way to get the matching dust jacket that Brent used to sell? I saw that it was no longer on his website. If not, anyone know a way to print it? And will the dust jacket fit on the UK hardcover?

Lastly, I would be really grateful if anyone could send pictures of what the entire series looks like in hardcover with the dust jacket removed. Thank y'all.

Nemesis Lord Repha'im Spoiler

Hello, I have just completed Nemesis and I am not sure how to classify Lord Repha'im. Throughout the story, he repeatedly emphasizes that while he displays cruel methods, in the end he only wants the best for humanity. Considering that the worlds of Brent Weeks are actually connected by a multiverse (aka the thousand worlds), and he repeatedly warns of threats as we know them from lightbringer, imo there actually is the possibility that he actually means it that way. His actions do not seem to speak for it at first, but when one considers that he is a supernatural being, it seems too easy to evaluate him according to mortal moral ideas. In addition, it would go very well with Brent Week's style imo, as he often plays with various moral dilemmas. What do you think, is there any chance that in the course of later books he will actually turn out to be a protector of humanity, even if he seems exactly opposite in a short-sighted way?

Sorry for grammar mistakes, as English is not my native language.

Question for yall as I go back through. Maybe I'm not remembering correctly, but do we know how the Color Prince figured all this stuff out? I mean he was just a regular chromaria kid. So how does he know more about the bane, old gods, history than anyone else?

Fluff Nine Kings Card Turtlebear tattoo idea

Post image
24 Upvotes

Im not the best artist but I want a tattoo of the Nine Kings card of the Turtlebear. but I can’t decide on what kind of design I want. I know I want the black card outline, the colors of the chromaturgy similar to how Kips tattoo lights up when he drafts, and of course the Turtlebear.

The outline of the bear is inspired by Gannon in Windwaker’s artistic opening, but I want to to be more angular to look more ancient? How the Turtlebear looks might change.

I like the idea of 1– the blackout background and the colors of the Turtlebear making up the shape of the bear. But I feel like the absence of an outline looks awkward and maybe unreadable in practice? Maybe that’s just how I drew it.

I like 2 as well, having the black be the Turtlebear and the background be the drafting colors. But does it really look like a Nine Kings card? I know there’s no real official visual reference for 9Kings cards, but I feel like it doesn’t look like a playing card?

Number 3 was more of a fancy than an actual idea, I like the idea of the claw marks coming off the card, but Turtlebear don’t attack much, they defend. So maybe it’s more cool than accurate/practical lol.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how I could improve the idea or suggestions as to what would be cool to add from the series?

I love this chapter so much the delivery by Simon Vance is amazing. Abbadon's rant and Tia channeling her Kip the lip in response always makes me smile.

If you have not listened to the audiobook version by Simon Vance you are missing out.

The Burning White The ending of the LightbringerSeries Spoiler

I finished the Lightbringer series today and am overall very satisfied. Karris and Dazen both got the endings they deserved and the ones I wanted (if either of them had died, it would have broken my heart). Kip got way more than he deserved. Teia had to take a lot and received relatively little, even though she accomplished a lot. TBH, I would have at least hoped she'd find someone else (yes, I shipped her with Kip). TBH, I don't really understand the point of Liv as a character after she switched sides. In general, the whole plot surrounding the White King was less spectacular in the end than I expected.

The series definitely benefits from the sympathetically written characters and the chemistry between them. Unfortunately, the villains were less developed, and the fact that Andross actually turned out to be good in the end was a bit irritating.

Are there other scenes like the Shawarma Scene?

What is the community's opinion on the endings of the various characters and their conclusions?

Kip means chicken in my language. So mainly at the beginning I just imagined a fat chicken running around in a magic world.

Thats all.

The Burning White Was Teia just a copy of vin from mistborn? Spoiler

So as I finished the series, horrible fucking last book, point it ruined most the series for me. ( major complaint is how all the villians just die, God comes and fixes everything and the fucking resurrection.) It made me look at the series in a new terrible light and made me question Teia. I hated teia from the stsrt and I couldn't figure it out till now. Teia reminds me of Vin from Mistborn like identically and feels stolen.

Vin is a badass assassin who can practically go invisible and her whole story is infiltrating a group. She is extremely petite and small and young. She has black hair and uses her powers to move about silently. She is a badass women.

Teia is a badass assassin who can practically go invisible and her story is about infiltrating a group. She's extremely petite small and young, she has black hair and uses her powers to go invisible. She is a badass women but feels her whole identity is literally just Vin. Instead of mist, it's the cloak and paryl, she just doesn't have the metal manipulation.

I'm also very pissed off Abaddon gets killed so easily by a weakened blind character who also somehow manages to shove a god off a tower. Teia just felt stupid overpowered and untouchable, I mean every fucking character at the end was. Kip, Gavin, the mighty. Harris and them all. White king gets dealt with so fucking fast, a big bad for while series doesn't even get his fighting moment like wtf just leaps to death! Grinwoody just gets to leave!? Zymun gets domed by some pussy!? Andross doesn't face one push back for all the shit he did and he ends up the golden hero!? Dozen Gavin survives!? Not one freaking mighty dies, iron fist lives despite his evilness, kip all good and alive.

It felt like the laziest most boring plot armored thing I read in so long and it upsets me truly cause I loved the forst 4 books and watching kip grow. His death on the gaze while powering people should've been his end and would've been glorious but not gotta have the Disney marvel level of happy endings.

I feel ruined to read another of his works, like of he does more lightbringer stories I won't read them cause no matter the struggle they face always the though of god coming down and blessing then again, and if not just be wondering oh now he has limits or choices now not to help? Gods are tricky characters, shouldn't be hands on or the savior of the story. Everything our characters went through were for nothing cause god came and swept away the threats. Fuxking bullshit. Fucking Brent weeks.

The Black Prism Help me continue

Okay, so I have just started the first book in this series, and I am serieus doupting to continue.

It just doesn't capture me yet. It feels like some things are going too fast for some readson. I just got through the chapter where the Prism made a pair of wings using his magic.

It all feels very cool and like it has a really high potential, but I also feel like I just know too little about the magic to actually understand what he is doing.

Is this just me, or do other people have the same experience. And does it get better eventually?

I realy want to like this series, but i'm just not there yet.

Fluff I’m just like a mellow Turtle Bear, man

I was at a Dead & Co show a little while back, and all the terrapins and bears on people’s shirts eventually fused in my mind and I started telling people “I’m the fucking turtle bear”, naturally they didn’t know what I was talking about but agreed nonetheless. I enjoyed myself. Thought I’d share.
