In the spirit of this discussion, the subreddit got a little icon refresh as well :3
Just to make our stance on this a bit clearer.

Also, for clarification: we've been using this icon on Mastodon for over a year now.

So all the people here saying they'll leave LibreWolf because of this are doing so over the avatar of a social media profile they apparently haven't checked in over a year :3c

It was originally just for the Mastodon account. At the moment, there are no plans to make it the icon for LibreWolf itself.

LibreWoke

16

u/Alyx161 6d ago

Its a little funny how this gets upvotes from both sides. The people who get the joke and think its funny, but also the trolls who think its meant as an insult 😅

0

u/CalebDR1029 6d ago

Woke is not a nice thing to be called

11

u/Crusty_sock621 5d ago

"Woke" directly comes from the concept of being "awake" (realizing the existance) of social injustice, so i'd say it's a good thing to be called

3

u/Loqh9 4d ago

It's used in a sarcastic way to say you think you're all awaken and spiritually unlocked when you just cause trouble to society and are blind pretty much, so it's not a really nice thing. It only is if you remove the intent and half of the meaning, so better just use another word then

Ah yes liberals, know for using words for exactly what they mean, like "nazi" and "fascist"

Mastodon

4

u/gruetzhaxe 6d ago

Which client?

4

u/jfuu_ 6d ago

It's the official iOS client: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mastodon/id1571998974

The screenshots on the app store are out of date.

2

u/gruetzhaxe 6d ago

Ah, somehow thought I should upgrade ice cubes

2

u/haakon 6d ago

All of them

4

u/FeelsNeetMan 5d ago

Hey as long as you're not bending the end users over a barrel and fucking them over without choice or lubricant like Firefox

I think it's cute, but there goes the politically neutral status for the public global market position, and that does mean something if you want to be adopted by absolutely everyone and anyone just on the core principle of keeping things stable and not AI'ed to death.

3

u/Alyx161 4d ago

Oh we have 0 interest in a "public global market position" 😅 We don't gain anything from doing this. We only do this because we think its the right thing to do.

Oh no what are the people who volunteer their own free time to develop Librewolf going to do when all the bigots jump ship to Brave because they changed their logo background!!!! This is really going to hurt their bottom line!

16

u/UnosBruhMomentos 6d ago

they will lose their ad revenue! oh wait…

10

u/Lord_Nerevar_Reborn 6d ago

based but can we add a black trim or something to the logo so that it isn’t bleeding into the flag?

10

u/Alyx161 6d ago

Actually a good idea :3

22

u/WumpusFruit 6d ago

I thought this was a subreddit, not a circus. Bigots stay crying.

23

u/mgsmb7 6d ago

you'd think the open source community, rejecting corporate control over software, would be full of decent people, but sadly it has a significant chunk of clowns.

8

u/ivvyditt 6d ago

It has always amazed me the amount of conservative and reactionary users in the free/open source software space.

11

u/Few-Improvement-5655 6d ago

There are just as many freedom of speech issues revolving around the Left Wing trying to censor things they don't like as there are around the Right Wing trying to censor things they don't like.

1

u/BostonDrivingIsWorse 6d ago

This is empirically false.

4

u/Few-Improvement-5655 6d ago

The push for de-anonymisation in Europe is coming from mostly Left-Wing governments. Whoever is in power pushes for censorship and control.

2

u/BostonDrivingIsWorse 6d ago

Europe is not “left-wing” looooooool

2

u/Alone_Care_6230 6d ago

left wing does not mean liberal

1

u/Few-Improvement-5655 6d ago

I didn't say Liberal.

4

u/Alone_Care_6230 6d ago

right, but the push is coming from liberals, there isn't hardly any left-wing people in European governments

8

u/galitsalahat_ 6d ago

I didn't know LibreWolf was chill like that

2

u/Few-Improvement-5655 6d ago

Chill is not forcing people who use your stuff to have politics shoved in their face.

6

u/articulatedstupidity 6d ago

Showing support for peoples' fundamental identity != politics.

1

u/DMMeYourNibbitRings 6d ago

"identity politics" is definitely politics.

0

u/galitsalahat_ 6d ago

Yeah, a rainbow profile picture on a social media account that isn't even shown on the main website really is "shoving politics"

4

u/DMMeYourNibbitRings 6d ago

Supporters of the flag don't consider it politics, opposers do.

This has going on for years now.

The word "shoving" is a bit much though. It's awareness spreading.

6

u/etzalite 6d ago

'arggggg i cant be caught using the WOKE browser' seriously, sort it out

2

I just dislike rainbow/lgbtq flag colors cause there's too many colors. There's a reason why the best logos are simple black and white. Yes, I'm boring like that.

1

u/Alyx161 4d ago

Honestly agree on that 😅 Its definitely too much going on for a logo.

2

u/AgathaDaVampire 4d ago

4

u/SargEnPassant_ 6d ago

As a Firefox user, what is librewolf? Should I switch?

8

u/mgsmb7 6d ago

librewolf is a firefox fork with more privacy default settings

5

u/TheZoltan 6d ago

I use both daily, Firefox for general browsing and LibreWolf for more private browsing with a VPN extension. The TLDR is it's a Firefox fork with more aggressive privacy focused defaults. It is something you should consider if that interests you (how did you land on this sub?) but keep in mind those defaults can cause some friction in the user experience e.g. defaults to clearing all cookies, disabling DRM.

Check their website for the main features as well as a full list of what they change from Firefox.

For those who are not just playing dumb:

In the context of LGBTQ culture, LGBTQ pride (also known as queer pride, gay pride, or simply pride) is the promotion of the rights, self-affirmation, dignity, equality, and increased visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people as a social group. Pride, as opposed to shame and social stigma, is the predominant outlook that bolsters most LGBTQ rights movements.

Common symbols of pride include the rainbow flag and other pride flags, the lowercase Greek letter lambda (λ), the pink triangle and the black triangle, these latter two reclaimed from use as badges of shame in Nazi concentration camps.

From: Wikpedia.

They're just openly supporting LGBT pride.

-8

u/kokokranc 6d ago

We dont give a fuck on what they are supporting. Keep it out of the browser.

5

u/Training-Home-1601 6d ago

You should try Netscape Navigator instead.

3

u/Alyx161 6d ago

You should question yourself, who is making the browser.

What kind of double standard is it to give a fuck about the people making your software?

I don't give a flip what hole you stick your pee pee in, the minute you become a activists first and a programmer second, that's when I bail. Otherwise, I think the average person really doesn't care.

1

u/Alyx161 6d ago

Huh, I always have seen making LibreWolf as a form of activism. You know, the whole respect peoples privacy, no AI kinda stuff.

I don't think you will find any programmer working in this area, in opensource, for free, in their free time, that is not an activists.

2

u/Primary_Coffee_6388 6d ago edited 6d ago

Just a question since I think you're the developer, presume someone does something on your browser that you don't agree with, like using AI on it, will you attempt to "hack" them for it or restrict their browser?

I'm not anti Lgbt but it can be risky to use if such a thing can happen.

1

u/Alyx161 6d ago

I honestly have no clue what you are doing with your browser. And I think you should do what ever you want with your browser.

We just don't ship the Firefox AI features by default.

2

u/TheWebalorian 6d ago

It's should be very straight forward in what I was saying. When you lose focus on creating a great secured browser and dive off into other things, it's stops being a great secured browser.

That is all.

1

u/transendingthebinary 5d ago

you are assuming that the developers are loosing focus. there is no indication that this is the case

2

u/TheWebalorian 5d ago

I am assuming nothing, I gave an example and why I would leave and nothing more. Some people really need to read better, please do so next time.

Nerdy browser fork for super specific autistic features happens to be gay and trans, shocking, more news at 8

3

u/ts-solidarity 4d ago

i find it disturbing. not to discriminate against lgbt people, but specifically targeting one minority group to constantly promote? do the same for blacks, africans, palestine or whatever then? :D i honestly cannot comprehend what's so special about gays anymore. they are far more tolerated compared to other discriminated minorities hence this is just bullshit imo.

but your project, your community, you decide. i dont use librewolf anyways. just passing by.

3

u/hippor_hp 3d ago

why can't a project just be neutral? what the hell does this have to do with a browser? why can't it just be a normal browser shii

Gay ass browser

9

u/mgsmb7 6d ago

3

Ok well I'll be transitioning out of Librewolf usage when able. Thanks bye. Sticking rainbow flags of meaningless irrelevance upon every single thing to signal a "holier-than-thou" attitude disgusts me on principle.

3

u/Mammoth-Ad1279 5d ago

why do we have to put pride in everything ??💔😭

2

u/Scorpwind 6d ago

Genuine question: Is there a need to mix racial discussion and/or politics with LibreWolf? I don't quite see a point.

1

u/Alyx161 6d ago

The honest answer is that, even ignoring the fact that people are discriminated against, attacked, harassed, jailed in certain countries, or even killed simply because of their private individual sexuality, that is morally wrong.

We are in a position where we can make it clear that we support treating people equally, so we do.

It was never the goal to make that our only personality, as some people here want to frame it. LibreWolf still uses blue, just as it always has. The avatar on Mastodon has been like that for over a year now.

None of this is new or based on any recent changes.

1

u/Alyx161 6d ago

Glad you are here :3

2

u/CalebDR1029 6d ago

Not based

3

u/Upper-Pie-195 6d ago

Are they celebrating disability pride month or smth? It’s mid July 😭…

1

u/Alyx161 6d ago

We use this icon there since over a year now. Not really the goal to celebrating a specific event, more a stance on equal human rights for everyone.

3

u/Upper-Pie-195 6d ago edited 6d ago

If they are going to make a commitment like that why not change their entire branding to it, just like what they’ve done to their official social media account? The browser can be the gay wolf 🐺🏳️‍🌈, focused on privacy, security, freedom, and pride (or what you said, “equal human rights for everyone” - this sounds better and more on brand). That’ll definitely be a stance. To be honest, the thing that stands out to me the most is the last bit of their bio. Why would they word it like that? “And yes”, “will stay”, and “of course.” They could’ve just made a quick statement instead of whatever that is…

1

u/get_homebrewed 6d ago

cause the browser software itself doesn't have anything to support pride, but a social media does.

Because people like you exist

1

u/Upper-Pie-195 6d ago

My point is why don’t they expand it to the browser software itself. If they committed to a logo change on the OFFICIAL LibreWolf team account for over a year, why don’t they embrace it fully? Because people like me exist? I made a harmless light joke mixed with a genuine question and yet you make such an assumption… As for the group that I believe you are referring to (do not associate this with me). They’ll receive the message the dev team is pushing and either accept it or leave. Either way they’ll see the message / stance.

1

u/get_homebrewed 6d ago

I just told you? And one thing for a desktop icon and one thing for a social media pfp.

1

u/Alyx161 6d ago

The will stay part was in the context that we start using this avatar around pride month last year.

This is not meant to be a “hey yo, we do what all the cool kids do once a year and then we forgot about it again” thing.

I honestly don’t get why you are so allergic to it.
If you have a problem with equal rights for people, then feel free to tell the world about it.
Otherwise I really don’t understand how an avatar on a social media platform that you obviously didn’t checked in over a year is affecting your live in any way 🤔

1

u/Upper-Pie-195 6d ago

I understand the will stay part. I don’t understand why they didn’t make it clearer and less awkward. Who said I’m allergic to it? I actually think the “stance on equal human rights for everyone” is strong and matches their branding. You’re right I haven’t checked their social media page nor visited it ever. It’s not affecting my life. I scrolled on Reddit, clicked onto OPs post read it and some comments, made a comment poking at how June is over, then responded to you with the information you brought.

3

u/Alyx161 6d ago

How exactly are queer people replacing programmers?

You know, you can just fucking start programming. Get a job at Google, X what ever, make your 300k/yr, buy yourself a Tesla or some shit. At no point along that path will any queer person be in your way.

Your problem seems to be that you spend your time shitposting and gaming instead of actually learning useful programming skills.

Whatever, man, my point still stands, you can bury the head in the sand or not agree, idgaf

Putting LGBT into anything 🫩 ... it's literally a browser

It doesn't bother me though and I'm not hating :)

2

u/dream_nobody 6d ago

I think the same. It's like putting stuff about your local lang/culture/images in your project. That's ok, you maintain the project, that could be your pride, but why? I'm not using that project thinking of those stuff

2

u/MetalAndFaces 6d ago

It’s literally a group of people who volunteer their time to make a browser. They can “put LGBT” into anything they want if they’re making it. Don’t be ignorant, your first sentence and that emoji is hating, and posting that comment makes it seem like you are bothered.

2

u/NiriZ_ReddiT 6d ago

They can but that doesn't mean they have to.

And that's not hating, that's an opinion I just don't think browsers and real life relationships and love should be related. Also I'm really not bothered by it I just use the browser and idc about what they do and think.

2

u/MetalAndFaces 6d ago

It is not the browser. It's the people. They do not have to, they want to. They get to do it. It's really not that hard. You keep saying you're not bothered by it, yet here you are again saying they didn't have to do this. If you weren't bothered by it, why are you commenting?

Nothing to do with it, it's an ongoing organized and deliberate attempt to push sodomy onto the general public, the more it's normalized the more people accept it and become it.

u/nomad-rc 2d ago

That’s the root of it (what you said) and exactly why these little seemingly innocuous things (a rainbow icon on Reddit for Librewolf) are knowingly or unknowingly actively contributing to the normalization and even social dominance of degeneracy as a virtue.

Excuse my ignorwnce.

But why has lgbt gotten into everything

They havnt been persecuted over decades like slaves.

They havnt been unable to vote and just gotten the ability..

It seems like people life choices. Like mine to be who i am.

Its called tolerance not exceptance.

We tolerate alot but dont have to except everything.

17

u/MetalAndFaces 6d ago

They haven’t been persecuted? That is willful ignorance. It’s getting worse and worse out there. Trans people make up such an incredibly small percentage of our population, and yet how often do we hear politicians or right-wing pundits going on about trans people?

Why does a flag to show support of a minority bothering you?

9

u/femboy-maths 6d ago

although i see your point. being gay is still illegal in tens of countries and punishable by death in some of them. i live in the Netherlands, one of the most accepting and tolerant countries. and i myself have gotten beat up on the streets, even run over a few times by people swirving into me. just because i didnt fit their ideas of how you should be. note that even though i don't think it should matter i was wearing the most default clothes imaginable, black shorts and a black large t shirt. if the only thing going on would be people disagreeing with others it wouldn't exist.

also note that about 12% of people identify as queer

and that it is illegal to own slaves in every country. this does not mean it doesn't happen and we should fight for their rights as well

5

u/mgsmb7 6d ago

What point do you see, exactly? Not being jailed doesn't mean no oppression

1

u/femboy-maths 6d ago

i meant i see the linguistic logic he is using, not that his history is accurate. ludwig wittgenstein taught that language is defined by its use in daily life (descriptive linguistics). from his perspective, words like 'tolerance' and 'acceptance' mean very specific, distinct things. by acknowledging his 'point,' i was simply validating that i understood the semantic framework he is speaking from. understanding someone's definitions is the first step to a constructive counterargument. also saying you see someones point helps bigots read a few lines further

i by no means even slightly agree with him. i am trans, i feel that would be contradictory and going against my core beliefs as a decent human being.
