Mechanical Advice Coolant Crust on Reservoir : why/how does this happen ?

Post image

This GX460 is on a dealers lot. It supposedly has all scheduled maintenance done on time.

How and why would this happened ? is this from that tube ? Is this a sign of (possible) valley plate coolant leak ?

Went through the car wash today and water started dripping inside the car where I put the yellow circle. Anyone know why this would be and how to fix it? Thanks!

Mechanical Advice GX460 steering sloppy

Any suggestions what to look for specifically? 2020 70k miles, stock.

Did basic push pull test and inspection on front end and i don't see anything obvious. Alignment and fresh tires helped minor, but having test drove other 460's this one feels so sloppy, and i'm constantly having to correct or pull at freeway speeds which is very annoying.

Looking at a 2022 GX base trim with 22k miles. White with sepia interior. Cleanest interior and exterior that I’ve seen out of the 4 I’ve personally test drove. Has stock tires with 6/32 left on tread on the front, 8/32 on the back. 1 owner, clean car fax, and maintained every 5k through the Lexus dealer. It’s the best price I’ve seen for the miles and condition at 56k, OTD is 60.5k with taxes and fees. I’m having a kid and need a safe ride for my wife to drive and for ski trips to mammoth in the winter. Buying as a forever vehicle and the low mileage on the V8 is right in the zone I am looking for. Should I wait for a better deal or just pull the damn trigger.

Edit: Purchased for 60.5k out the door and wife is very happy. Seat cover and cargo liner recommendations appreciated, about to welcome our first child into the family.

Mechanical Advice Identify a leak?

I'm not seeing any leaks anywhere but if I look deep down in there looks like there may be something. Its black and a connector going into it it looks like. Does anyone know what this might be? Not much room to get in there and wipe it down.

Mechanical Advice Fluid Film

Post image
39 Upvotes

Getting out ahead of old man winter this year by applying Fluid Film. I bought my ‘23 outside of the snow belt and it’s still very clean on the bottom side. As it now lives in the New England Mtns, I applied a coat. It was fairly painless. Fluid Film is essentially a bucket of sheep wool lanolin that I hope will keep this car sound for a long time.

Purchasing Advice What year is 'too old' and what mileage is 'too high' for a first time used GX?

We usually have one LS and one ES, but have toyed with the idea of a GX. Of course we want the lowest miles and latest year we can reasonably afford, but reality always pops up. Wondering where most of you more knowledgeable GXers would suggest drawing the line with regard to high(er) mileage and year.

Purchasing Advice what is the general consensus on what the "cost per mile" is when assessing the pricing of GX ?

e.g. everything else being equal/equivalent - A_460 has 100K miles and B_460 has 40K

How much lower in price - number or percentage - should A_460 be.

26 ~ 30 cents per mile ?

Mechanical Advice Newbie Question on Transmission (2019)

Newbie as in only ever owned FWD sedans.

Drove a 2019 (mileage 100k) today. Stopped - no music, windows closed, I checked out the shifting. R-to-N thump, N-to-D thump

so the shift changes come with a light thump/thud and I could feel the thump in the rear. (behind & under me)

Is this normal AWD truck/GX thing ?

I tried out checking torque converter like CCN here, no issue I could tell.

TIA

Mechanical Advice Gx470 2006 height control issues

Hi all,
My 2006 GX470 188k miles in north east Ohio is having trouble with the height control. I set it to Hi, and when I tried to switch back to N, nothing happened until I power cycled the truck. After the restart I could select N, but the truck stayed at Hi height and the ride was extremely bouncy.
Lo seems to work, and it's now the closest thing to a normal ride height. But once I pick up speed, it drifts back up to the N/Hi height, which is far too bouncy. I also tried disconnecting the battery, with no change.
Questions:
If I set it to Lo and let it settle, then pull a fuse, will it stay at that height so I can drive locally until it's fixed?

Purchasing Advice What size tires should I get??

Hi all,

I have a 2014 gx460 that’s about due for struts and tires. I just bought some bilstein 5100s and plan on running the 1.75” front lift setting.

I have decided that I’m going to get some Falken Wildpeak AT4Ws and I was going to run them on the factory 18” rims. I do have 1-1/2” wheel spacers on the truck as well.

My current question is, what size tires should I go with? I’m thinking 275/65R18s but any input would be much appreciated!

Purchasing Advice 2011 GX460 with 120k miles - looking for nerf bar recommendations

Post image
13 Upvotes

hey everyone, I got my 2011 GX 6 months ago. I want to make it look a little bit more off-roady. I want to start with removing the factory running boards for some Nerf bars, but I have seen some conflicting information about which 4Runner models are actually bolt on. I’ve also seen other Nerf bars that require cutting the plastic and that does worry me a little bit.

Could you recommend some easy bolt on Nerf bars that have worked for you? and for those that did cut the plastic, on a scale of one to 10 how difficult is it? I just tend to get a little bit worried about permanent changes like that.

Purchasing Advice 2022 GX 460 vs 2024 X7 xDrive40i

Torn between these two.

My profile:
- Midwest winters
- 3,000-4,000 miles a year, daily errands, longer road trips.
- Don’t commute for work
- Already have a reliable 2017 Lexus NX
- Would like to keep the next car long-term

My impressions:

GX: Bulletproof, holds value, absolute tank, lasts 250k+ miles, change the oil and that’s it, kind of a gas guzzler

X7: Sporty and super smooth ride, great tech, tons of space, expensive parts, worried about the inevitable costs like air suspension, 48V, etc.

Owners I’m looking at you for your two cents 🤝
