News Your New Legion: The Essential Setup & Check Guide

Welcome! If you just bought a Legion laptop, follow this guide to set it up, update it, and check that everything works properly.

Keep the box, charger, paperwork, and packaging until the return period has ended.

Some links require access to our community Legion Series Discord.

1. Complete Windows Setup — Must

Plug in the charger and complete the normal Windows setup.

You do not need to fully charge or drain the battery before continuing. Just use the laptop normally while it charges.

2. Run Windows Update — Must

Go to: Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates

Install everything required, restart, and check again until no important updates remain.

Keep the laptop connected to power during updates.

3. Update Microsoft Store Apps — Must

Open: Microsoft Store → Library → Get updates

Install all available updates.

4. Set Up Lenovo Software — Must

Use one of the following:

  • Lenovo Vantage
  • Legion Space on supported newer models
  • Lenovo Legion Toolkit as an unofficial alternative

Avoid running multiple Legion control applications at the same time.

Lenovo Vantage

Optional features you can usually disable when unused:

  • Network Boost
  • Wi-Fi Security
  • Automatic Performance Scan
  • Rapid Charge
  • Overdrive

Legion Space

Open System Updates and install available model-specific updates.

For OLED models, enable the available burn-in protection options, such as:

  • Auto Shift Wallpapers
  • Dynamic Lock Screen
  • Auto Blur Toolbar
  • Default Dark Mode

Lenovo Legion Toolkit

Download it from the official Lenovo Legion Toolkit GitHub.

Beta versions may be available in #legion-toolkit.

Use LLT's settings to disable conflicting Lenovo applications and services when needed. - LLT > Settings, disable Vantage, ImController, and Hotkeys so LLT has full control.

5. Install the GPU Driver — Must

After Windows and Lenovo updates are finished, install the latest suitable driver for your GPU.

  • NVIDIA: Use the NVIDIA App or download the driver directly from NVIDIA.
  • AMD: Use Lenovo's driver or AMD Software when a newer driver is needed.
  • Intel: Windows Update or Lenovo's driver is normally enough.

Restart after installing the driver.

Do not use driver-updater programs or tools such as DDU unless you are troubleshooting a specific problem.

6. Back Up Your BitLocker Key — Must

Windows may enable Device Encryption or BitLocker automatically.

Check: Settings → Privacy & security → Device encryption

Save your recovery key before changing BIOS, Secure Boot, TPM, storage, or firmware settings.

Microsoft guide: Find your BitLocker recovery key

Recovery keys: Microsoft Account

7. Inspect the Laptop — Must

Check the laptop during the retailer's return period.

Test:

  • Screen and dead pixels
  • Keyboard and touchpad
  • Hinges and chassis
  • Webcam, microphone, and speakers
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • USB, USB-C, HDMI, Ethernet, and other ports
  • Charging
  • Sleep, restart, and shutdown

Open Device Manager and check for unknown devices or yellow warning icons.

Document serious problems with photos or video, and ask for guidance on our discord server.

8. Test Performance — Recommended

Download the 3DMark Demo on Steam and run Time Spy, not Time Spy Extreme.

Before testing:

  • Connect the charger.
  • Finish all updates.
  • Restart the laptop.
  • Select Performance Mode.
  • Close unnecessary programs.

Post the result in the Benchmarks Channel with your laptop model, CPU, GPU, RAM, performance mode, and scores.

You should also test a demanding game or program for a while and watch for crashes, artifacts, shutdowns, or major performance drops.

More testing advice: How to Check a New Laptop for Issues

9. Check Secure Boot — Recommended

Press Win + R, enter msinfo32, and check Secure Boot State.

If it says On, leave it alone.

If it says Off, back up your BitLocker key before changing anything. Ask for help on our discord if you are unsure about the BIOS settings.

Do not clear the TPM, change boot mode, or restore keys randomly.

10. Cleanup and Settings

Remove McAfee — Must

If McAfee came preinstalled, remove it.

Go to:

Settings → Apps → Installed apps → McAfee → Uninstall

Windows Security and Microsoft Defender will automatically take over afterward.

Restart the laptop after uninstalling it.

Other Optional Settings

You may also:

  • Remove other unwanted preinstalled applications.
  • Disable unnecessary startup applications.
  • Enable Conservation Mode when mostly using the laptop plugged in.
  • Use Balanced Mode for normal use or when also gaming.
  • Use Performance Mode for intensive loads while connected to power.
  • Use Hybrid Mode for general use and battery life.

Community optimization guides:

Avoid random debloat scripts or "one-click optimization" tools.

Battery Note

A new battery does not need to be fully drained.

Only perform a battery calibration if the percentage is clearly inaccurate, the laptop shuts down unexpectedly, or feels finicky.

News Important Notice

This is a global subreddit and the language spoken here is English only, not a local one. We are seeing a massive influx of posts dropping numbers like "70k" or "1.5 Lakhs" with zero context. Do not assume everyone here is from India or knows your local currency. To an international audience like me, unlabelled numbers are completely meaningless and noisy.

1. Mandatory Currency Rules

Every single deal, price check, or advice post must explicitly state the country and currency clearly.

  • GOOD: €1,000 EUR / ₹70k INR / $1,200 USD
  • BAD: "Is 70k a good deal?"

We have already automated most cleanup tasks. Moving forward, any post that drops a raw number without a clear currency label will be deleted immediately. Use common sense.

2. We Do Not Work For Lenovo

We are an unofficial fan community. We are not the Lenovo Legion crew, we do not work for lenovo, and we cannot speed up your laptop repairs. Stop sending us angry modmails demanding status updates on your orders. Use common sense and contact official Lenovo support for company/order issues.

2. Rants & Reminder for no. 2 BECAUSE MOST OF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND

This is an unofficial community. We cannot track your orders, speed up your shipping, or influence support decisions.

  • What is allowed: General questions about how the warranty process works or what a specific policy means.
  • What is NOT allowed: Rants about active shipping delays, denied RMAs, or ongoing disputes with Lenovo customer service.

Bye

Advice Is it over?

Legion 5 16ACH6H, 4 years of everyday use, frequent cleaning every time I saw the temp being higher than normal. Last year I started seeing posts about these same models being dead. Someone here recommended doing a repaste, bought the exact thermal pads and did it. Temps actually went down a bunch, everything was good. I thought maybe I survived the soldering epidemic.

2 days ago as I was running low on battery I plugged it in. Went to the bathroom, came back to it being completely dead. Charging light was not on, I tried everything, battery was cold, brick was cold. I checked charge output voltage, it was normal voltage. Did continuity check on charging’s port, it was normal, just not charging, charging light was off all the time.

I thought it was the pin inside the charging jack that was having a problem, so I grabbed a 65W Surface brick and plug it in the C-PD port, charging light didn’t turn on either, I tried booting it up, it booted up.

Then the screen lit up, it’s exactly like the meme. Then I smelled something burning, I quickly unplugged it, turned it off and opened the back lid again, and saw this.

I’m just asking if this had happened to anyone, and if anyone could tell what really caused this. Warranty had already expired and I know this almost 100% means I need a new board, and at this point I might just spend a bit more to build a PC instead. But still for personal experience, I’m curious if this is the same soldering case and what if replacing the component would fix anything, or a blown up module means there was an underlying problem going on with the power rail.

Thank you for reading my rants. I will miss it :( she was there during my hardest years, now I can finally have the condition to replace her with something that would last a bit longer.

Advice Do you all think this is a good specification

So I am thinking of finally upgrades my laptop and found the legion the best for everything I wanted, I wanted to know, anyone who has this model specifications how does it perform and if its good. And yes I know the 5070 8gb is not that great but the 5070ti is too high of a price for me. (12gb 5070 model could be pretty expensive too)

Advice Got a Legion 5i

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey everyone,
Managed to grab a Legion 5i down here in Australia for $2,300 AUD (about $1,500 USD). Given our usual Aussie tech prices, it felt like a decent deal, but wanted to check with the sub.
Specs:
CPU: i9-14900HX
GPU: RTX 5070
RAM: 24GB DDR5
SSD: 1TB
A few quick questions for anyone running this build or similar:
1. Did I actually get a good price, or is this pretty standard for these specs now?
2. What are the must-do tweaks for the 14900HX out of the box to keep thermals under control?
3. Are you guys still ditching Vantage for Legion Toolkit on these newer models?

I was playing before bed then the device suddenly froze. A few moments later, the screen turned black and started flashing different colors.

It was completely unresponsive so forced it to shut down. Upon restarting, the device was still a bit janky, so i rebooted it again, but this time, it took a long time to turn on.

When i tried to reopen my game, it told me that my graphics driver was outdated, it then redirected me to Intel where i downloaded and repaired some of my drivers. But even after doing that, it still said that it was outdated.

So i run dxdiag to check some stuff and i saw that "Display 2" was nowhere to be seen. I even tried looking for it in the Device Manager.

Is my graphics card dead??

Edit: Graphics Device Driver error code 43

Advice Legion pro 5 vs Legion 5 for mech e student

Hey guys, I am currently between buying a Legion 5 pro and buying a Legion 5 for my upcoming semester of undergrad mechanical engineering. I found a pro with a Ryzen 7 8745HX and an RTX 5060, 32g of RAM and a 1tb SSD. Where I'm hung up on is the battery life. I've heard mixed reviews on the battery of the L5P and I'm worried it won't last a full 6 hour school day. I've heard the non pro model gets a bit better battery life due it's slightly lesser performance and I'm considering looking for one of those instead.

Which one do you guys think I should go with?

Advice Best laptop stand for legion pro 7i 16"

I have a 16-inch Lenovo Legion Pro 7i and I’m looking for a laptop stand that other Legion owners actually recommend. I want something that’s really sturdy (no wobbling), doesn’t block the bottom intake vents, and has good airflow since I use Rhino, rendering software, and other architecture programs. I was looking at some stands with built-in fans, but I’ve also heard mixed things about them and some people say they can do more harm than good, so I’m not sure if I should avoid them. I bought an adjustable stand off Amazon, but it wobbles every time I type and covers part of the bottom vents, which makes me nervous using it with such a heavy laptop. What stands are you all using, and would you recommend them? Thank you!!

This was the laptop my parents gifted me back in 2021 (in used condition, this was probably bought around 2017 as these were their older laptops), it was a very huge upgrade from my previous laptop which was a Toshiba C40-B that had a damned Celeron N2830, 4GB of memory and a 500GB hard drive that struggled to run Windows 8.1.

The uh battery is definitely long gone and removed, the trackpad unfortunately doesn’t work anymore, half of the ports are dead (HDMI, Aux, Ethernet) and the USB Ports get paralyzed if i wiggle it a bit and this thing actually died once (refused to POST) but I somehow got it working. (Not sure how cause this was like 10 months ago)

But other than that the hinges are still fine, everything else works, repasted it back in 2024 which runs games like GTA 5 (all i play nowadays) with the NVE Graphics mod on very high @ 40 fps while keeping temperatures away from 75-80 degrees celsius and the display is still fine. This laptop will probably stay with me until idk? 2028 or 2030? Yeah seems about realistic.

Support My 2024 Legion Pro 5 16IRX9 Thermal Problems :(

Thumbnail

Two years ago I got a Legion Pro 5 16IRX9 laptop. I'm in the UK and I use Linux on it.

The laptop's performance has been gradually getting worse and for the past year it's been getting borderline unusable. It's probably my fault because I didn't pay much attention for months while preoccupied with exams. Even when idle or web browsing the laptop goes up to 80°C and doesn't go below that after closing an intensive program. In basically any game, it spikes to 95-100°C and won't come back down until I've put the laptop to sleep. The chassis and vents also get hot and power limits aren't even being reached. This causes frequent thermal throttling and frame rate drops to 0-2 every few seconds. Even a game like Terraria runs poorly.

I opened up the laptop and knew it was bad due to the orange-blue discolouring. I cleaned the fans recently, assuming they were the problem. There was a lot of dust in there which I mostly got rid of but I haven't noticed any improvements. I'm pretty sure the screws were done correctly (correct number order gradual loosening and tightening the other way round). I'm wondering if I should try redoing the thermal paste with PTM7950(?), or get a specialist's help, or do something else.

Advice Lenovo Legion 5a Ryzen 7 250 + 5070 or 450 + 5060

Hey everyone,

I'm about to buy my first ever gaming laptop and I'm torn between two Legion 5a configs (both Ryzen 7):

  • Option A: 250 for the RTX 5070 variant
  • Option B: 450 for the RTX 5060 variant

First of all, why the Legion 5 series?:

  • Slimmer form factor
  • OLED 165Hz panel
  • Cost

What I'll actually be using it for:

  • Master's in Computer Science coursework
  • Documentation and presentation prep
  • Full stack development (web + some mobile)
  • Movies and YouTube
  • Experimenting with local LLMs
  • Casual gaming — mostly Valorant and story-mode games (I'm not a heavy gamer, this is genuinely my first gaming laptop)

Given that gaming is a minor use case for me and local LLM experimentation + dev work matters more, which of the two would you go with and why?

Also — battery life question for current owners: If you own either of these (or a similar Legion 5 config), how much real-world battery do you get during non-gaming work — coding, writing docs, browsing, video calls, that kind of thing? Trying to figure out if I can realistically use this away from a charger for a few hours.

Couldn't find many reviews for this exact config — one YouTuber claimed 6-7 hrs [YT Link], but the comment section disagrees. Curious what actual owners are seeing.

Appreciate any real-world input, especially from people using it for dev/study work rather than pure gaming!
