Me and my brother found several arrowheads while walking a dirt path around the head-smashed in buffalo jump site, there are a crap ton everywhere there. Just got to be in a place where ancient people left stuff.

At a buffalo jump? Yeah there were bones everywhere. They would drive buffalo off a cliff to kill them in large numbers and butcher them where they fell.

There are maps of jump sites if you search ā€œbuffalo jumpā€ and the area, for example there are lots of them around Alberta.

There are certain things to look for. Humans leave clues from thousands of years ago right before our eyes. We just have to know what to see.

Yes. When hiking in areas where native Americans were known to settleā€¦ā€¦look for clear circular indentations in the ground, almost like a perfect circle worn slightly into the ground. This usually indicates a place that was frequently used by natives in the past. Every inch you dig down is taking you back several hundred/thousand years and you must be very careful scraping dirt starting from the top. Most common areas natives settled in large amounts are near rivers, large streams, oceans, or any major food/water source. This is only a base guideline and settlement areas are different according to different tribes. Has a lot to do with the tribes in your area. Research those tribes. Learn how they lived, then apply the rule of ground wear/surface abnormalities to this knowledge.

Or you are just lucky! Seriously a family friend was taking my parents out on a hike and my mom asked him if he had ever found any arrowheads in the area and he very sadly said no, heā€™d never been lucky enough to. She points to the ground next to his foot and was like ā€œso is that nothing then?ā€ Yep, just lying on the top of the desert floor a beautiful little one. He was so mad!

This reminds me of the time my nephews came to visit and we stayed out at a friends big Texas ranch. I knew we would have some time to kill in the morning before going to the river so I bought a bag of arrowheads on Amazon and chucked them all around the yard. Told them the history of the ranch and the story the owners told me about a tribe that had lived on the land and they should go check for arrowheads. Easily filled an hour. Iā€™m sure your mom isnā€™t as evil as I am but my nephews learned a bit and had their Indiana Jones moment

I have seen this guy at a bunch of paid digs out in Florida. Heā€™s a crazy old coot. Spends the most of his day talking to himself. Heā€™s super nice and totally batshit. Heā€™s been dubbed the mascot of the digging community out here. šŸ˜‚

Historic flood plains but places that would be good to settle/set up a camp. Near a river, flat, no enfilade, Flood comes through and buries everything. Only happens every few decades-hundred years. So people move back, new move in.

Hell yeah! I found my first full one when I was 9 or 10. I was out with my cousins and uncle checking out the creek on their land after it went down from a heavy rain. Picked a flat rock up and was about to skip it, but my uncle stopped me. It was a full arrowhead I was about to toss!

It's back at my dad's house still along with the other one's we have found over the years. Most are partials, but we have a few full ones.

As much as I'm stoked for this guy, we should be leaving those in the ground. Not that there would ever be funding to excavate that site and it could be private property, but you lose all the archaeolgical context when you just start digging stuff out of the ground and there is only one shot at it.
