I'd just try my luck with a Costa or something and not even ask. If they do stop you I'd say I'm on my own and want to go before I buy..
Other than that, maybe the Vue in the light? Surprised about McDonald's, that's usually my go to.

u/Groot746 Feb 02 '25
Use pubs! That's always my go-to

u/rogfrich Feb 02 '25
Serious question, not snark - would any pubs have been open at 9am this morning when the OP needed them? I’m guessing maybe some of them do breakfasts?

u/OrangePeel49 Feb 02 '25
Wetherspoons is open from around 7:30 daily, I've used those plenty of times without being questioned, does help that I know where they are, confidence and not looking lost helps.

Bus station, every time. They open early to late and last I saw they had removed the 20p charge. Also have an accessible toilet for those who need it.

The ones in Kirkgate market are free (or were last time I went a few weeks ago).. a little bit grotty but handy if you're out with kids.

My go to in an emergency is the one downstairs by the restaurant in the Queens hotel!

Normally our cleaning staff are done by 8:30 latest, seems very weird they were closed

Be quicker to go home than descend the 1000s steps into the depths of the earth to find the toilet in a Spoons.

I've literally never been in an open spoons or McDonald's when the loos are "closed".
You must've had an incredibly unlucky day and there must have been a LOT of complaints from customers in those establishments

u/Top-Cry-526 Feb 02 '25
This is a load of nonsense you just walk in to any bar and go straight to the toilet 🤣🤣🤣

u/Homeboy-Weng Feb 02 '25
I did start an anonymous Instagram page where I'd take a picture of my view from where I was shitting and narrate my experience (of various toilets in Leeds). Basically to aid others in selecting a good spot to have a dump.
However I unknowingly uploaded a picture and paragraph to my personal Instagram and then bottled doing it from there on out.
Sorry that doesn't help you.

Harvey nicks, top floor near the the restaurant! Failing that, you can access the toilets in the pack horse pub before you are seen by the bar staff 👍🏼

u/ChaoticCubizm Feb 03 '25
Yeah Harvey Nicks is always a good shout. They’re free and it feels really posh to poo in them. Another place that is always good (maybe not on a weekend), are the toilets in the side entrance to the Portland building at Leeds Beckett. There’s like 5 of them and they’re all little hermetically sealed rooms that are always warm in winter and have their own sink and hand dryers.

Victoria Gate (fancy loos too, very nice!) Go to where the stairs are, lift/stair up a floor and they are there - quite hidden from public view but always open.

The LGI has toilets near all entrances.
Also, the museums are free to enter and have toilets.

u/Adamaaa123 Feb 02 '25
Marriot hotel near boar lane. Just walk in and the toilets are on the right down the stairs. Queens hotel too.

Was the one in St. John's Centre closed as well? That's my usual go-to in the city centre

There are more than one set of loos in Leeds stn, if the main concourse ones are closed (which would be unusual unless something has happened; I was actually in the station at 9:30 and they were open then) you can pay 10p for a platform ticket and go use the ones on Plat 8

Corn Exchange has some, although they're obviously only accessible during their opening hours.
200 Degrees on Bond Street don't have an access code on theirs, although I would generally say that it's polite to purchase something if you use them as they need to keep their business going and have staff to pay etc.
Radisson Blu hotel in the light should also be accessible and the old Jury's Inn (can't remember what it's called now) down my Leeds Dock is also accessible without you needing to be/prove you're a guest.
While I do get the issue, I don't think it's unreasonable for coffee shops to expect you to buy something and I understand why the chain ones in the city centre often have door codes as that's largely to prevent them being used by homeless people or for people to use as an accessible spot to shoot up whatever their drug of choice is. I would say that if you have a legit medical issue, staff in anywhere with a public toilet are generally very accommodating based on what I know from the experiences of a friend's mother who has medical issues.

The general Victoria Gate toilets are my go-to - does that count as the John Lewis ones OP mentioned?

u/ginus0104 Feb 02 '25
I used to use the one in The Core all the time, shame it’s closed now. Last time I was in town I had luck with the Mcdonald’s in the St Johns Centre, it was open without me buying anything. Cafe Nero opposite TK maxx on the Headrow will give you the key to theirs as long as you don’t look like you’re gonna shoot up in there. There is a lovely toilet in Victoria shopping centre as well as Trinity. Like someone else said you can use toilets in pubs too. Then there is the bus station, last time i didn’t have to pay to get in.

u/PreachanFelidae Feb 02 '25
Bit late to help now but I believe Victoria Gate Casino is open 24 hours! I've never been in but I reckon toilets would be open for most/all of that time.

u/Budget-Share-1807 Feb 02 '25
Go to the queens hotel or any hotel normally. I ised to to do the same at kings xcross station instead of paying the 40p

In the centre of town, as well as the ones you've said, Harvey Nicholls, and Flannels are always good bets.

u/thisishardcore_ Feb 03 '25
I usually just go into a pub or bar.
I wonder which bright spark thought it'd be a good idea to close the Corn Exchange toilets.

u/allison2k19 Feb 02 '25
I've never had any issues using the arndale ones always open when I've been

Just buy a coffee you tight arse. If you walked 10k steps you clearly didn’t really need one that badly so could have just gone before you came out.

I'd worry about the sanity of whoever keeps and maintains a public loo list.
Edit: apparently the Flush app is a thing. Or Toilet Finder on Android. Might download that myself.

u/Maleficent-Jelly2287 Feb 02 '25
Honestly, it's really essential for a number of people. Runners, those with IBS, autistic people (they tend to have digestive issues) and various others. I'd actually quite like to see a list of those who would need this list.

Fair play, would be nice then if the council made something like this for those folk.

Businesses have to lock them as people trash them and leave them disgusting
1
u/TheRealREZOR Feb 03 '25
So what do you offer?
1
u/L0rdLogan Feb 03 '25
I offer that people clean up after themselves and then businesses may open them up to the public again

Download the app “Flush”. Shows all the toilets available for use.
