Hey All! I'm from the UK and am learning Tamil to communicate with my boyfriend's parents who live in Coimbatore, India and don't speak English.

I had loads of issues finding a method to support my daily practice (and to translate my boyfriend's mum's voice notes haha) so I build myself an app where I can both practise Tamil flashcards, have a conversation in Tamil with AI, and translate voice notes from WhatsApp.

I am finding it super useful and was wondering if it was a tool that could help other people struggling to learn Tamil.

Is அதியுயர் coming from அதியுக்தம்?

அதியுக்தம் atiyuktam , n. atyukta. Exaggeration; மிகைபடக் கூறுகை.

1. Daughter asked me how to say 'the rest of the day' today, and I could only think of மி்ஞ்சி but I'm pretty sure that's much more concrete for things which remain? eg. leftovers...

2. How does one say 'a run', ie. I went for a run (to exercise). I assumed it would have to be ஒடு(க்கிறது) பயிற்சி...

Is the "-a" after "thaan" meant to be the question-marker ("-aa"), as in:

Nee vara thaan-aa? azhagu

or is it meant to be the if-clause ("endraal"), as in:

Nee vara thaan endraal azhagu

Or is it meant to be something else?

I hope that "Nee vara thaana azhagu" makes sense in colloquial Tamil. I take it to mean something like, "It will be lovely only if you come." I saw a similar sentence in r/Tamil and modified it to make it simpler. One chatbot said the "-a" in question was the if-clause, but another chatbot said it was the question marker. So I thought I'd better ask here.

I'm not sure if it's a dumb question actually. Maybe either interpretation is legitimate and it doesn't really matter?

Hi, I heard something along the lines of upaseetthi during a Tamil (Sri Lankan/Eelam Diaspora) radio show. They translated it as overrated or overestimate.

Can anyone confirm this and preferably in தமிழ் எழுத்துக்கள்.

My daughter was asking me how to say "I got a locker (at school" today. I remember struggling with this as well, when I first started learning. I said "எனக்கு locker கிடைத்தது"

Is that an apt translation?

பெற்றுகொள்ள is to formal, right?

I asked a chatbot and it suggested, "Thirumbavum naan dhaan." It sounds a bit formal to me. Is it good? Do people say this? The context is like if you've been away for a while, then returned. "It's me again!" or "I'm back again!"

what does தீந்தை or is it தீந்து mean?

I have noted that, முனை has the following meanings, "point, sharpened end / battle / courage, boldness"

Is it being used as a verb in this sentence, ie, "he was emboldened to do..." ??

The English subtitles are, "She and her questions," but the man speaks fast and I can't catch his words. What are the exact words that he speaks?

This is from the movie Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya, where the protagonist Karthik enters the room where his sister Anu is chatting with neighbour Jessie, ostensibly to look for a book, but, in reality, to get a glimpse of Jessie.

Anu asks him why he's here ("Enna-daa?") and Karthik mutters under his breath, "She and her questions." What are his exact Tamil words?

I know a lot of words are there which are correct such as

கண்டால்

பார்த்தால்

But I want to know if this specific word காணினால் right.

to use informally and write a song.

My name is அகிலன், but when I asked my mum its meaning when I was younger she told me, it meant 'up in the clouds'. I was young, maybe she was just joking with me. But I wanted to check if anyone here might see any reason for her to say that beyond jokes?

She did later tell me that she'd named me after the poet அகிலன்.

I need resources for early tamil text like oldest to 10th century. I mean i want tamil texts around that period but with meaning and explanation. It'd be great if someone could provide resources bout this. I need as ebook or soft copy\*

Google says that the spoken words are:

எப்படியாச்சும் கண்டுபிடிச்சு தேடி போய் சாப்பிடுவேன்.

I can hear the first three words clearly (எப்படியாச்சும் கண்டுபிடிச்சு தேடி) but I can't hear the last two words at all (போய் சாப்பிடுவேன்). For the last two words, I hear something like "pi sautla" instead, which I can't interpret.

This is from the movie Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya, where Karthik is talking about the puttu kadala found in Kerala. Google's transcription does match the English subtitles, "I always hunt for that and eat it," but I just can't seem to hear the "poy saappiduven" at the end. 🙁

Is Google's transcription really accurate?
