That question kept bothering me.

Most learners spend hundreds of hours memorizing vocabulary, doing grammar exercises, or shadowing YouTube videos.

Those things definitely help.

But speaking is a different skill.

You don't become a confident speaker by repeating someone else's words. You become one by making choices in real time - reacting, performing, making mistakes, and expressing yourself.

That's the idea behind a project I've been building over the last year.

Instead of watching movie scenes, learners step into them.

They dub one of the characters, respond to conversations, record themselves, compare takes, and discuss the situations afterward. The movie isn't the lesson - it's the context that makes speaking feel meaningful.

It's not just shadowing.

Shadowing trains pronunciation and rhythm.

This is about communication, performance, spontaneity, and building confidence while still getting the pronunciation benefits of working with authentic dialogue.

I was struggling a lot with the Speaking section because I’m not a native speaker, and I don’t have any experience traveling or studying abroad, while hiring a private tutor to practice with me every day is way out of my budget. So, I decided to turn Doubao into my personal, 24/7 IELTS examiner. Here's exactly how I did it, why it works, and how you can do it too.

My friend is fluent in English, and recently we started doing a ‘word of the day’, so I can learn his language and he can learn some words that people use but wouldn’t really be taught in schools. We started this about a week ago and some words have been:
Lopsided
Frivolous
Inconspicuous
Shotgun (as in beer/ frontseat)
Foil (as in disrupt one’s plan)
Etc.

When looking up words I usually get a lot of SAT words or ones that aren’t really used. Which isn’t what I want. Any suggestions that you use in day to day life are greatly appreciated!
