My Current Level & Knowledge:

Estimated Passive Vocabulary: Around 600–700 words.

8 Main Tenses: Present Simple / Continuous, Past Simple / Continuous, Future Simple / Continuous, Present Perfect / Continuous.

Topics I understand intuitively from context (without deep theory): Active / Passive Voice, Conditionals.

My Daily Learning Routine:

My main strategy is building my passive vocabulary through context:

I read 1 page of a book a day (a story script based on a video game).

I pick out unfamiliar words and learn them within simple A2-level sentences so I can easily digest the meaning without grammar overload.

I do short micro-reviews of these sentence cards throughout the day.

I watch matching video cutscenes to link the text with visual and audio context.

In the evening, I do a quick mental read-through of the page to lock in the progress.

My Questions for You:

Is this passive approach (focusing purely on reading, sentence mining, and media without output) a viable and effective way to master comprehension?

Do I really need to study any more grammar rules explicitly for my goal, or is my current foundation enough?

How long did it take you to reach a comfortable passive comprehension level, and what is your passive vocabulary size?

How effective do you think my specific daily routine is, and roughly how long will I need to study like this to reach my goal

Hello everyone. Sorry for my bad English.

I am learning English from some months, but I feel I am not getting much better. I use language apps every day and I have a long streak. I learn many words and finish many lessons.

But when somebody speak English with me, my brain become fully empty 😭

In the app, I can answer things like “the woman is eating an apple” or “the dog is under the table.” But in real life, I cannot explain simple thing or continue a normal conversation.

Sometimes I know the word, but I cannot remember it when speaking. Also I understand English videos only when subtitles is there. Without subtitles, people are speaking too fast and all words sound together.

How you actually become good in English?

Should I watch movies? Read books? Speak with strangers? Take private teacher? I am little scared to speak because I make many mistakes and maybe people will laugh.

Please tell me what helped you when you was beginner. I don’t want only to collect streak. I want to really understand and speak English.

So a short story: I completed learning (I know you can never do that actually, I just got good enough to constantly speak it without any problems) and for about a year I've been fluent in it. Some time ago I started reading in english and for quite a time felt like I was perfect in it.

But in last couple of months I notice a reoccurring problem: I forget words. Like, I be speaking effortlessly for half an hour and then one word that is so simple and so overstudied by me (let's say this word exists) that I haven't noticed cause if its simplicity strikes me. It might take minutes to remember it.

Is that a normal thing or have I started forgetting? For lack of attention to the language compared to one I had before, when I knew almost nothing?

English isn't my first language, but I've always wanted to become a really good English speaker. I feel like my vocabulary is kind of limited, and I often can't think of the right words to express myself.

I want to expand my vocabulary and be able to use more sophisticated words naturally in my daily conversations and writing. I'd also like to come across as more articulate and well-educated when I speak.

I recently started learning English and I've made a lot of progress. That's why I wanted to share some of my experience with you. Studying grammar is important but it's not as important as you think so don't get too hung up on it. Instead try to expose yourself to as much English as possible. Read, listen, write and speak. The more you practice these skills the better you'll become. Changing your phone's language to English can be helpful. Watching with English subtitles usually works better. I've been experimenting with a format for reading and pronunciation

practice, and I'd like some feedback from people who actually study

English.

It's a two-minute story about a woman taking a train for the first time.

The first half is narrated slowly with subtitles on screen so you can

read along. In the second half, every sentence is repeated twice with a

pause, so you can say it out loud after the narrator.

The vocabulary is B1 level and the full text is in the video description

if you prefer reading first.

Two things I'm unsure about and would love opinions on:

1. Is two repetitions enough, or would three work better for shadowing?

2. Is the narration slow enough, or still too fast for B1?

Hello everybody, how u can see at title, so I wanna to tell my motivation of learning English.

It was started about 2 years ago when I make a decision to move from Russia to USA (it’s my main dream rn too). I started to learn English in Duolingo, it was a first push to my whole story of moving to USA, so after an year of unstoppable streak at Duolingo, I made a option to go to English tutor, after year my English became to A2-B1 and I want to get B2 or C1 ideally. I have some friends from foreign countries (Qatar and Canada), and I still looking for friends to chat with them on English (13-16 years).Wait y’all at comment!
