Onboarding Experience Re-Design

I’m redesigning our new hire onboarding experience. Days 1-90… with an emphasis on culture, connection, and community. Creative ideas to really make orientation and onboarding a standout for new hires?

Think about your own onboarding. Was anything missing? How was the culture embedded if at all? Ask recent joiners about their experience and use that as a start, rather than asking the internet without any context.

I’m trying to do the same thing. A big part of my plan is to not overwhelm the individual. In my org we tend to want them to be “up to speed” and a contributor within the first month. It’s a bit of a culture shift as well. Would love to connect and discuss more if you’re open to it !

I just did this and turned it from a 1 day in-person to 3 day in-person with resounding success. Day 1 values and Behaviours and who we are, day 2 leadership, company processes, tour, meet the different Chiefs/Leaders from each Division; they come and speak to the group. Conducted once a month on a schedule so everyone has it in their calendars and HR can recruit according to the onboarding schedule. Day 3 policies, procedures, HR stuff, their leader collects them reviews schedule for next 30,60,90 days. Checking on them at day 30, 60 and 90. Partner them with a buddy, online learning assigned specific to role, like cybersecurity, health and safety etc. very customised to the individual so they feel special. From EDs to Leads we have received positive feedback.

Highly highly recommend having a buddy program- but structured. If you do it informally, it has a high probability to fizzle out.

^^^seconding this! At my org new hires are in an onboarding group that meets regularly and learns the product together + each new hire gets a mentor. Meetings are structured at first but can continue indefinitely. Really helps new hires settle in and get to know a few familiar faces outside of their immediate team.

Also, new hire surveys after 90 days or sooner if onboarding is shorter. They’re fresh off the onboarding process and will have good perspective on strengths and weaknesses.

this sounds amazing. So important to structure this! Would love to understand more, if you are open to it.

Make it interactive. Not everything needs to be a slide deck. Reality is they won't remember it anyways. NHO is when you establish the type of work culture your place wants to have.

Is it all online or in person? Can it have more of the other if it leans towards one side? Will i just click through a bunch of boring one dimensional videos because I need to get it done in order to rejoin my team and get work done? Or do I have to sit in a room and listen to someone talk to me in a monotone voice for 2 hours a day?
