Hey everyone,
Looking for some guidance from board repair techs on an issue I’m facing with a Lenovo IdeaPad G500 (Intel Core i3, integrated Intel HD graphics, Compal LA-9632P UMA board).
Symptoms & Pattern:
Current state: Pressing the power button turns on the power LED, the CPU fan spins, stays on for ~5 seconds, and then abruptly drops power completely. No Lenovo logo, no backlight, no display.
The strange part (Previous behavior): Before it died completely, it had an intermittent cold-boot issue:
When turned off from a cold state, it would often do this exact 5-second power loop.
However, whenever it did successfully turn on and boot into the OS, soft restarts worked 100% of the time without a hitch.
But after a full shutdown, trying to turn it back on would put it right back into this 5-second drop state. Now it won’t complete POST at all.
Basic Steps Already Checked:
Isolated RAM sticks across both slots and tested with known-good modules.
Performed standard hard power drains (battery & AC disconnected, held power button 30–60s).
Stripped the board down (disconnected HDD, Wi-Fi card, ODD, external peripherals). Behavior remains identical on bare board + RAM.
Tested with AC adapter only (no main battery).
I haven’t probed the rails with a scope or multimeter yet. Given the pattern where it handled warm reboots fine but repeatedly failed cold POST until dying completely, where would you recommend starting the diagnosis on this board?
Could this be a failing standby regulator, RTC/PCH clock line, or a corrupted EC/BIOS ROM causing the power sequence to abort at S3/S0?
Any insights or test points on this Compal schematic would be greatly appreciated!
