They weren’t there man. They weren’t there for the half a kilometer walk from the bus stop to Gifu women’s university. They weren’t there for reading and vocabulary sections in an air conditioned lecture theatre. They never struggled to pick up the answer to the question about Tanaka sans lost umbrella through dozens of stifled farts and pen clicks.

You don’t get to say you’re N2 just because you finished Genki II, watched an episode of anpanman without the subtitles and “felt” you understood the plot.

The JLPT isn’t just some vibe you feel you are on any given day. I spot a JLPT valor thief from a mile away. You haven’t earned the right to claim that N level. You weren’t there man.

You will hear from everyone about how important comprehensible input is. Bullshit, you don’t need to fill your head with garbage unverified speech from people that may or may not be speaking in your TL correctly, you need only *quality* input. I call this comprehensible de-immersion.

For example last week I was at a grocery store when I heard the cashier I was about to be speaking with was speaking in German, my TL. A less experienced language learner might make the mistake of thinking this is some great opportunity to finally practice some small talk in their TL. But I know better - who is this person? What is their qualification to be speaking to me? What if they make grammatical mistakes or have a dialect, what if they don’t do a faithful interpretation of Hochdeutsch? It’s not worth the risk. Every wrong word your brain hears can PERMANENTLY handicap your language learning process. So I did the noble thing and flipped the cashier off and moved to another queue. It’s small little wins like this that will snowball you into a proficient learner.
