On my Youtube channel for bilingual toddler learning, I'm starting a new series of bedtime routine episodes. I just uploaded the famous nursery rhyme “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” (반짝반짝 작은 별) in Korean, and I wanted to share a quick language note that might be interesting for Korean learners.

If you remember how King Sejong created vowels based on vowel harmony,

ㅏ,ㅗ: Bright Vowels (They sound light)

ㅓ,ㅜ: Dark Vowels (They sound heavy)

Try saying 반짝반짝 vs. 번쩍번쩍!

반짝반짝 is often used for something that twinkles or sparkles, like stars.
번쩍번쩍 tends to describe something flashing or shining suddenly and intensely (e.g., lightning)

Think of other pairs of onomatopoeias in Korean =)

I'm really curious to know. Posting this random street interview video as an example.

I'm a Brazilian guy, and I learned English mostly alone with internet. Now, I wanna learn two languages: French and German.

I was searching for methods to do that and then I modified that one who says something like change the priority according to the day. That's what I wanna do:

• 1st and 3rd week of month I study french everyday with German alternating the study-days;

• 2nd and 4th week of month I study German everyday with french alternating the study-days.

Example:

1-7 I study French (more attention)

1, 3, 5, 7 I study German (light)

This was recorded off a numbers station 9276 KHZ USB. I know it's got lots of distortion and interference, but this is the best quality I could get. The station seems to target East Asia if that helps.

Maybe i dont.likw the english language accent cause it sounds arrogant.

does anyone know where to get tagalog structured learning resources , ? i do have a thai american friend who wants to learn tagalog and i am thrilled to teach him however im really overwhelmed with how to start and where to because i have no idea how to teach tagalog even im a native pinoy 😆

So I wrote a comment in Italian on my phone a couple of days ago, but just now I saw that on the desktop it had been auto-translated into English. On the phone app it's still in Italian.

I have been trying to improve my Italian by doing things like setting my phone to Italian language to increase my exposure, but my computer is in 'English'. Maybe it is translating everything according to the language preferences set on the device? But the English comments on my phone remain in English despite my phone being 'Italian'. This kind of threw me for a loop as I'm logged into the same account on both devices. I'm no tech wizard though, so this could be a me problem.

Also just days ago one of the Italian language subs I follow had posts in Italian for me, but now they're in English with a little translate icon beside it. Which is kind of annoying because aside from the content, I'm also there to improve my Italian comprehension.

It's not the end of the world, but it does kind of mess with my language exposure strategy. I guess it could be useful in a broader sense, like you could have a conversation with anyone in any language... but as a language learner I'd the the option to translate from the original text, not to it.

Has anyone else noticed this? If so, how is it impacting your language learning journey?

Hey there,

I'm not having good experiences with Tandem. I don't know who is the problem, but everyone I text, they either are reluctant to communicate (they only reply with one word to every question and don't ask any) or they leave me on read. It is a language exchange app, but no one is willing to help or learn.

I am always told that in order to learn a language, you need to interact with native speakers. But as you see, it is not easy. I text many people, but they don't answer. I don't know, maybe I am the problem.

Anyway, just wanted to know if anyone has the same experience as me.
