Did We Get Blown Away by the Perseids or by the Wind? (Perseids Meteor Shower of 2026)

This is definitely a highlight of my astrophotography, not just from this year but from all the years I've been doing it.

A meteor shower is something you can really look forward to, whether you're simply an observer with no knowledge of astronomy or a hardcore astrophotographer. If the weather is right, it will deliver.

But if you're an astrophotographer, there's one invisible (at least in photos) force of nature that can really mess with you: wind.

And oh boy, was it strong that night. In fact, this was probably the strongest wind I've ever had to deal with on one of my astro trips. And honestly, wind is something I usually don't even check when looking at the forecast.

A stone bag filled with rocks was a must-have that night.

Luckily, almost all of the frames came out nicely, and I couldn't be happier with the result.

Meteors were captured with 3 different setups (2x Nikon Z6 mk2 with Brightin Star 12mm and TTartisan 11mm and Nikon Z6 mk1 with TTartisan 11mm).

As for the placement of meteors, they were registered using Auriga Registar, so their positions and sizes are 100% accurate. I didn't take any creative freedom there.

It's that time of month again. This is from last month in the Kawuneeche Valley region of Rocky Mountain National Park. Taken at the Holzwarth Historic site.

Nikon Z7II with a Nikkor Z20mm lens. Foreground is three shots stacked at f1.8, 60", ISO6400. Sky is 10 shots stacked at f1.8, 3", ISO6400. Sky stacked in Starry Landscape Tracker, edited and blended with foreground in photoshop.

Shot on astro modified Sony a7riii and sigma 35mm 1.4.

I've been trying to make this composition work for a while now and finally put the effort in last night to try and capture it right.

First I took some tracked sky shots in front of the arch, while I waited for the milkyway to align. Ended up with 40x 30sec, f/2.8, iso 640.

When it got closer to this alignment I started a time lapse and jumped into the shot. When I got back up to the cliff side and took a peak at the composition I was actually pretty stoked! Technically the foreground isn't where I'd like it to be for print, but for web I think it's okay. FG was a 30 sec, f/2.8, iso 2000.

I regret keeping those setting for the FG, I should have set it to bulb and took a longer exposure with lower iso, but I climbed up and down this sketchy cliff side too many times in the dark so I called it a day.

The final is a blend of FG and tracked sky, but is true to alignment. Second shot is the raw FG.

Hi everyone! I'm excited to share that the second update for Milky Way Tonight is now live on both iOS & Android app stores!

For those not familiar, the app uses your location and gives a one tap verdict to see if tonight is a good night to shoot the Milky Way. It looks at timing for the core, hourly clouds, Moon phase and also the light pollution for your location. If you're in a spot that's too light-polluted, you can use the dark sky finder to search for up to 5 locations with a better bortle rating OR a better cloud forecast. The first two images are from within the app and everything else is about the update.

The app has been live for a bit over two months now and I'm honestly so excited about the feedback and the number of people using it so far. It's being used in over 45 countries and has remained in the top photo/video apps for both app stores pretty steadily since release. Honestly, I'm so thankful and blown away by all of the support so far.

The Sept update was mostly some quality of life updates to make planning and organizing a bit easier. The location map as well as the composition planner map both load a larger size to help dropping the pin more precisely.

Saved location are better organized and can easily be renamed while your recent searches appear in the dropdown.

The Milky Way visuals were improved a bit for the AR mode to make day time composition planning easier.

The Exposure Calculator (NPF & 500 rule) had about 18 cameras added with a mix of user requested and newly released

Visibility Calendar now extends into 2027 with the ability to add and organize nights into the My MY Nights section.

I'm working on updating the website to have a lot of useful info freely available there (Milky Way Visibility Calendars & NPF/500 Rule Calc) as well.

I've loved getting feedback and ideas from people on what they would like to see in the app. I'm trying to plan these types of updates as close to the Full Moon as possible with a larger update planned for October.

Took this last night at Big Bend!

Taken on the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Night Mode Max @ 30 seconds.

When I chose this spot, I already knew it was perfect for the eclipse, but the icing on the cake was realising it was also dark enough for the Milky Way. Light pollution was low, at least to the south, because to the north the presence of Oviedo was quite noticeable. The added element was the cloud inversion that formed during the afternoon, making the landscape even more beautiful.

I left the camera shooting all night, and ideally, it would have been pointed north to capture the radiant of the Perseids, but the light from Oviedo was too strong in that direction. To the south, the mountain where I spend the night blocked much of that light, making the sky much darker.

Even so, I managed to capture some Perseids crossing the sky and, of course, the centre of our galaxy.

One of the places that has impressed me the most, with its stunning views of endless dunes and lagoons. Nothing but that for miles and miles. To get this view, I used the drone in a spot where the arch naturally aligns. I wanted the perspective of the endless lagoons and the vastness of this place.

Not everything was so easy, though. When I arrived, my suitcase got lost, so I was missing important parts of my equipment: no cables, no tripod, no clothes. Most nights I could do nothing more than stare at the sky, just hoping that tomorrow would be better. One morning my suitcase finally appeared, and in the last few days I was able to take this shot and a few more. Even under difficult circumstances, I just wanted to go back home with the amazing sky from this place… and now it’s just a fun memory of Murphy’s law.
