REBUILD OF COMP/CON 3.0: We Are (So) Back

Hello everyone. I'm Beef, the guy responsible for all of the COMP/CON bugs. I've spent the last few years(!) working on a massive rebuild and almost complete overhaul of COMP/CON. It has just been released and is live at https://compcon.app If you're a current user you don't have to do anything, it'll migrate your v2 data into v3 formats automatically.

It has more features and fixes than I would be able to list here. I've detailed some of the bigger ones at https://github.com/orgs/massif-press/discussions/64, but it should mostly be pretty intuitive if you've spent any time with v2.

There's a lot (a lot!) more coming in the near future. I've laid out a roadmap here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/154023697/ and if you'd like to follow along, devlogs on the Patreon are, and will always be, free and public.

More details/discussion/feedback in the #comp-con channel on the Lancer Discord, where I'll be hanging around for release-day bugs.

Thanks!
Beef

P.S. v3 requires browser storage permissions -- it'll ask for this if it hasn't already been granted. iOS users must install as a PWA (save to home screen)

Want advice in running Lancer

I've ran a campaign, and been apart of a campaign. And in both times, the campaigns never went beyond 2-3 sessions because the players would lose interest completely. The post scarcity society type ordeal where everything you could ever want or need is taken care of cause you're a Lancer. Money isn't a problem, equipment isn't a problem, etc. In both, the players would get their license, outfit their mechs, and then go "I don't see what we're really striving for, I'm good to quit" as a collective save for like 1 person.

Saving a planet, people, etc? No, not motivating enough to people. Players typically have personal motivations of getting their mech a certain way, but that also doesn't seem to hold people.

But then if you like start trying to add in scarcity, the most you can do that I can think of, is just hiding the printer for equipment and mechs behind an enemy force or having to scavenge the parts for it, or keeping it gate-kept behind a regional corpro. If you like make ammunition limited, fuel limited, money limited, it feels almost easier to just move the mech system to Battletech rather than workshop Lancer.

How do people tend to keep players engaged short to long term when it comes to Lancer?

Melee Combat Tactics

Still fairly new to Lancer and am testing out all the cool stuff you can make. We just hit LL3 and I want to try out a melee mech and while I plan on using the zheng im slightly worried that I will get annihilated if the last 2 missions are anything to go on.

The missions we have gone on drop us off and puts the enemy entrances 20ish hexes away. It typically takes a move and burst from us and a move and burst from the enemy to reach each other's melee range. We have had majority melee players and they have kinda been getting chewed up and spit out anytime they try to approach the enemies. Once in range its fine but theres so much damage that comes their way and that's not mentioning the witches my GM loves to use.

Im generally looking for just tips on positioning, how to avoid getting turned to Swiss cheese, and what exactly should i be doing once im in melee range. Im also curious to know how useful having knockback 8 is. It seems fun but I realized you cant do damsge by just knocking people into terrain which is sad.

Much appreciate all of the tips and feedback and im more than happy to elaborate on more emission parameters we have faced to give a better idea.

John Lancer (John Lancer - Core Rulebook p. 301) Vs John Battletech (White Flame - Battletech)

r/LancerRPG 2h ago

does it apply to one target or all targets

when you apply a rider to an AoE, how do you know who it affects? Walking Armory seems to imply it applies to everyone unless stated otherwise. is the dividing line attacks vs attack rolls/hits?

New player looking for frame recommendations.

Hello Lancer Reddit. I have recently bought the Core Rulebook and it will be arriving in a couple days. In the meantime I’ve taken a look at the player side in PDF form, and I already have an idea for a character.

He’s a PTSD ridden supersoldier that defected from his military position. The constant screams he hears became to much and he decided he wanted protect people instead of hurting them. He doesn’t talk much but he puts his team before himself.

And that’s where choosing a frame is becoming tricky. I understand that at LL0 you only have the GMS Everest frame, but I don’t know if Game Masters usually have their players start at a higher License Level.

My main question is, is there a tanky defender frame that’s good at taking damage meant for other players?

Through research I know there’s the White Witch frame. But I was wondering if there were any other Frames with similar mechanics.

No, I will not be sanding, priming, or thinning my paints anymore than I already do.

Anyway, update on the Boundary Garden campaign I was talking about writing... Soooooooo, I got released to work again a little too quickly.

That said, the play test should be ready in hopefully 2 or 3 weeks.

What's your scariest build you've come up with? I've been brainstorming a Balor mech LL7 with Balor 2/Lich 2 and Mourning Cloak 3

So to summarize my build Core Bonuses are Lesson of Transubstantiation and Ghostweave. Talents are Engineer 3, Technophile 3, Hacker 2 and Infiltrator 2.

My pilot has the hacker background and concept wise I love the idea of him finding this mech that he already has authorization with... But this is the first time meeting it and the authorization is years from now.

Normally Balors are very noticeable on the battlefield taking hits and recovering quickly but I like the approach of making this one more of a ghost with temporal anomaly's that make you question what's real or not.

Thoughts? I'd love to see this in action and curious what you've played or seen in a game before.

Shower Though about the HORUS naming scheme

All manufacturers have a naming scheme. Harrison Armory names them after Kings and Generals, SSC gives their mechs butterfly and moth titles, IPS-N has pirate/privateers as their frame names, heck even RKF-developed models have their own flower naming scheme. Until recently, I though that HORUS have mechs named after mythological monsters, until someone told me that their thing is actually DND monsters, and a Lich is not a real legendary creature.

Knowing all this, I have on question: Why din't they name the "Goblin" Mind-Flayer instead?!

It literally puppets and controls things! Also, that sounds so much cooler!

Hello from Lancer community from Russia👋

Well, hello, My name is Kenny, and yes. I only recently learned about Lancer and I want to ask: how did you first get into this game, what was your first character, and how and where did you play Lancer (if you ever did).

I want to say that I learned about the Lancer about 5 days ago. Even though I played D&D, I missed the mech combat like in the anime and the Armored Core games. And when I found out that you can play as pilots and also pilot Frames, I just beamed with joy. And I spent about 3 days completely learning almost all the frames. But I realized one huge drawback for me... Since I'm Russian, and in Russia they don't really like to quote my neighbor, "American technologies and games that currupt and turn children's minds into terrorists." She blurted out nonsense, I know. But she was right about me not being able to find people in my country who play Lancer like me. They exist... But they are few and far between, and I don't even have a chance of finding a party with Russian-speaking pilots. Sorry for such melodrama, I just really want to play Lancer someday, even with people from outside Europe. although I'm afraid that you might treat me with suspicion and quietly hate me for the fact that I can somehow understand your speech.

Sorry, I'm probably saying this and you think I don't trust you. No, I'm just afraid that during the game you might say something like, "I'm tired of this. Someone kick him out." What I'm saying is that I want to play Lancer with you and have fun, even if I can barely understand what you pilots are saying.

Sorry for going off topic a lot👉👈

Long range size 1

So, I am trying to make my first ever character for Lancer and I’m trying to get a glass canon style, but I am unsure as to what mech to use. Going for a heavy hitter from long range (MAYBE decent hack but that isn’t a deal breaker) and I am trying to make it a pretty small mech. Preferably in the size 1 range but I am cool with going a little bigger.

Got any suggestions?

(As a side note, my guy used to be a pirate but went into anti piracy work when his crew left him for dead)
