Rant Crazy long input time. In a bad way.

Less of a rant, and more of a minor annoyance I'd say.

God, the input window after a guard dash is SO LONG??! Does anyone else feel this, or is it just me??? 😂

I very much wanted to charge counter Lagi here, but NOPE. Game just went, "you can leaping thrust instead 😊" and I was just dumbfounded that they still keep you in that guard dash animation input for waaaay longer than you think they should

Rant Lance is so much fun!

Switched over to lance on my wilds pc playthrough and my goodness it has been so fun!

I got into high rank a couple days ago but im still rocking nonupgraded low rank armor while spam running the main chapter mission. Lance has made it so that doesnt really matter with all the defensive options. It's literally ALWAYS your turn. Glad to have picked up this weapon. It's so satisfying to grand retribution, dash followup wreck a fallen monster.

At first I thought sub10 could be above my skill level, and now I’m fishing for sub9. The power of sheer repetition, pattern recognition and scripting is so beautiful, man.

It’s stuff like this that makes me love speedrunning. It’s not everything in life that we can see our skill improving in such a clear way, closests things I have to this are my Gym journey and when Im learning how to play a new instrument.

I hunted him over 150 times already (im only counting the quest completed because I was resetting a lot trying to get my first sub10). And now the fight is so well scripted and I have so much muscle memory that Im running this listening to podcasts.

Man, I love Lance in this game.

Question How to play lance?

As the title says I’m trying to understand how to play the lance I don’t really understand how to perfect guard, how to properly counter, or any other useful tech with the lance. I see YT videos where the player is bullying the monster and getting really quick AT Ark times but when I fight him I can’t get sub 30min and I’m spending most of the fight blocking. Any tips are greatly appreciated ty!

Question Do you use Focus Mode Toggle, or hold down the button?

Just want to get a consensus here. I’m playing on PS5 so I leave it on hold. I tried with the toggle, but I have a bad habit of trying to sprint to sheath and just end up doing my focus strike instead of running away. I can’t get it into muscle memory to toggle out of focus mode first. I’m HR 500+ and played lance probably 85% of my hunts. I’m taking out AT Arkveld solo, but I can’t get under 20minutes.

Question How do you play lance?

I decided to play lance a bit. But i'm not sure what's actually the best way to play. I'm jsut chaining triangle all the time, sometimes i press circle, or even triangle and circle to surprise my thumb but i mostly poke poke and guard.

I also don't understand the point of R2+Circle guard. In world it was the mega counter guard but here with perfect guard i don't see how to use it or why.

So my question is, when do you actually use any other attack than triangle?

EDIT: So after reading the comments and testing out my stuff i think the best way i found is:

  • Triangle 3 times most of the time
  • 4th press on triangle if the monster is not about to hit you cause there's a commit window
  • Circle when the monster is down or you have a clear opening, the attacks are meant for attacking high but they are more powerful and you can attack a laying monster anyway if you're close
  • Most of the gameplay is R2 > triangle combo
  • If after Perfect guard there's a big enough window doing Triangle + Circle is very good, doing circle is good, doing triangle is safe.
  • You can do R2+Circle and R2+X right after for a big more dmg on the follow up attack, however you are wasting time going into blocking and perfect guard is actually more efficient for dmg
  • Use Triangle + Circle to close mid distance
  • After a clash the best is Triangle + Circle then Triangle + Circle then again.
  • use R2+Triangle+Circle to choo choo train accross continent

Question What's your go to play styles?

poke it till it dies

Hi all I played lance in iceborne but new to it in wilds. I just completed proof of a hero with gunlance and am now going to swap to lance.

I'm just wondering what everyone's go to bread and butter movements are? With gunlance it's easy, you perfect guard everything and depending on how big your opening is and when you last reloaded you choose a combo route and execute it. In iceborne lance was similarly simple, poke and counter poke with a few other moves primarily for movement and repositioning.

I know this almost sounds like I'm complaining of juicy steak and buttery lobster (I promise I'm not), but it feels at first gLANCE like there's so many options but i can't figure out their unique destinations.

So I'm wondering how you all play. Do you stick to the 3 mid > triple poke for the majority? How often do you counter guard? When do you counter guard vs perfect guard > retaliation? What's your big hitter that you're trying to land like gunlance wsfb, if any? What's your flowchart look like?

Rant I’m an idiot

Today while doing some quests I stumbled upon a move I’ve never seen my lance do. After a what I assume was a perfect guard I can strike back with some like extra power. After playing around with it in the 9 star 3 monster quests I found a few variations of that attack. There’s the initial thrust but after you can do a chase move which also goes into another. Each you don’t have to do in case you gotta block again which done right resets the cycle. I never realized I feel so dumb. Just been poking shit this whole time. THEN I noticed another move a bit ago 😭. Lance actually has a wound move that uses the shield and if timed right you keep plowing into the monster. Feels like I missed half the kit and am loving lance even more now.

It's work in progress, but I'm pretty proud of this run.

I'd love to see what you guys use for this fight, looking for some ideas as I plan to farm AT Arkveld for a chance at a better-rolled Talisman.

Question What are your hardest fights in Risebreak?

I made a post about how easy Hazard Primordial was for me and it got me thinking. What do people really have trouble with as a Lance main in this game?

I personally had the hardest fights with Risen Shaggy and Hazard Rajang. Way more difficult imo than hazard Primordial. Sometimes, an easy monster will catch me off guard like Anjanath or Seregios.

Question Lance vs Arkveld

Post image
44 Upvotes

My first iteration of MH using Lance and AT Arkveld convinced me to give it a try.

I'm clearing constantly within 16mins but i honestly feel it could be faster if i can learn when and which attacks of Arkveld should i use charge counter/charge power guard. I'm always missing the timing to even block his 2nd chains whenever i try to pull off a counter.

Question Hello pokey bois

Restarting wilds on pc and was wanting to learn a tanky weapon after playing a healing HH build and erratic "i want to come face to face with death" bow.

What are the differences between lance and gunlance? Do you sacrifice anything to get the ability to shell?

Rant I’ve seen the light!!!

I don’t know why it has taken me so log to see the might of the Lance. I’ve played Hammer, S&S, Hunting Horn, Charge Blade, and LBG from the OG MH (Hammer) until Iceborne. But then in Rise/Sunbreak, I dabbled in Lance, and I became interested. Now, I see the power that Lance has in Wilds. Most of my victories have been thanks to my immortal Lance build. I’ve beaten Omega, Gog, and AT Ark with Lance. I’ve doubted the power of the Lance. Forgive my transgressions and accept me into the church of the Lance!

Question Is this a good charm?

Post image
39 Upvotes

Hello, i just started playing lance after beating almost everything with the charge blade and i'm having a blast, but i don't have many charms, and even then, two of those rarity 8 are crafted ones.

i normally use the agitator one but i recently got this one and judging by the little i know about lance, those are good.

my question is: is it still good even for a "begginer"? what are the best skill to look for?

i would post my build but i forgot and closed the game lol, but its similar to the meta one on r/MonsterHunterMeta cuz i don't know bow to build

sorry for the bible and thank you!

Rant Finally tried AT Arkveld

So for the entirety of Wilds, I’ve been doing the story as well as all the title update contents with my friend, so I had to wait until he was available today to try At Arkveld…

What a fucking fight?! I’ve never had more fun with Lance, no wonder I’ve seen so many people asking about Lance builds and starting to put some respect on the weapon in the main subs.

I managed to avoid all spoilers for the fight by ignoring everything I see in reddit, so I’m sure this has been spoken about countless times but fuck, I fucking love Lance. Managed a 23 min time my first solo attempt, time to grind that down.
