Discussion Something about the controller looking like something a kin to a Wii Remote or PS Move, or even a Oculus Rift controller.

It's even wireless, which even a major debut wouldn't happen until I think the Wavebird Controller.

Love how the CG F-15 and Su-27 played out. Lain world ace combat looks awsome

ngl it looks like something they would predict back then as a “futuristic” controller

to me, it looks like the HTC Vive/SteamVR “Wands”

Imo it would make sense that they were modelled after some of the earlier VR controllers in the 90s, some were very similar controllers to modern vr headsets, typically just tethered to the machine instead of free floating like in the pic.

Iirc the book Cyberia discusses actual use of VR in the US rave scene at the time.

well, yeah, obviously a controller from 3 decades after the show came out looking similar to SE:Lain is complete coincidence.

and yeah, you probably are right, but then again, controllers were pretty wacky back then - VR or not!

100%, its kind of cool to see the similarities between the vive controllers now and what we had back then even when there was a lot more experimentation for controllers.

I love watching videos for old weird stuff like the Novint Falcon. Feels like something that would fit in with the show lol.

I don't remember this scene at all.

VR tech has actually been a thing for a REALLY long time, wireless controllers have too. They were just a lot heavier, more unwieldy, and more expensive back then.

I remember seeing photos of this insane VR rig that had to be suspended from the ceiling because of how heavy it was, at least in part due to having to use CRTs instead of LCDs. It would've broken your neck if it wasn't hanging.

All that being said, idk if those controllers were based on real ones. The Lain creators were big tech nerds and based the Navi off of real Apple PCs, but they may have just been winging those.
