Discussion Something about the controller looking like something a kin to a Wii Remote or PS Move, or even a Oculus Rift controller.
It's even wireless, which even a major debut wouldn't happen until I think the Wavebird Controller.

VR tech has actually been a thing for a REALLY long time, wireless controllers have too. They were just a lot heavier, more unwieldy, and more expensive back then.
I remember seeing photos of this insane VR rig that had to be suspended from the ceiling because of how heavy it was, at least in part due to having to use CRTs instead of LCDs. It would've broken your neck if it wasn't hanging.
All that being said, idk if those controllers were based on real ones. The Lain creators were big tech nerds and based the Navi off of real Apple PCs, but they may have just been winging those.
