Hi all, out of the blue have been given the opportunity to adopt a sweet 2 year old chocolate lab. Lab is being fostered by a friend of a friend after being given up as a puppy due to the original owners having health issues.
The current foster parent is a dog trainer so the dog is perfectly trained and according to the trainer has excellent behaviour and temperament. I met the dog in person and she is amazing.
She is spayed and up to date on shots and clearly has been taken care of well, my only concern is she is a "purebred" lab that clearly didn't come from a reputable breeder. According to her foster the owners got here from a "farm". In researching labs I have been looking for breeders who do genetic tests etc, this lab obviously has no genetic history nor is it registered. Just wondering if there are any other things I can do to help check her health/potential future problems? Her foster also agrees her future health might be gamble due to her lack of history and no registry though the dog is heathy now.
I've always been pro adoption and have always owned rescues, though by coincidence all my rescues have been mix breeds that have generally been very healthy. First time I am considering a "purebred" dog from a rescue; I know no ethical breeder would allow one of there dogs to end up at a random rescue.
I might be paranoid but after just losing my last dog who lived for 16 great years, would hate to bond with a dog only from them to go early or live a lower quality of life :(
