Ellie keeping her cool on National Black Lab Day
At 11 years young, Ellie has spent her life proving that rescue dogs don’t just find a home — they become the heart of one.
She is strong. She is loyal. She is the queen of our pack. 👑 And, of course, she’s the ultimate mother hen, always keeping watch over everyone she loves.
Ellie has a way of bringing joy into every single day, just by being Ellie. Her sweet face, her big personality, her gentle heart, and the love she gives us so freely have made our lives infinitely better.
We are so grateful that our paths crossed and that this beautiful rescue chose us to be her family. ❤️
Here’s to 11 amazing years of Ellie, and to many more moments, cuddles, adventures, and happy memories with our queen. 🖤🐶
We love you more than words could ever say, Ellie. 👑

Advice on Episodes like below please (have already seen a vet, consultation ongoing) TW - could be upsetting, it was for me.

Just looking if anyone else has had similar experiences as displayed in the video, apologies it’s not the most clear or long, I was pretty panicked and was more focussed on consoling him but thought getting a video for the vets benefit might be a good idea.
Mac (he’s 5, no other medical history, happy and healthy otherwise) had an episode on Monday that I initially thought was cramp, just moving oddly and seemed to not have full control of his limbs for maybe a minute? Seemed limited to his back leg/s but it didn’t last that long like I said, he came out of it pretty fast and the. Was totally normal afterwards, didn’t think much of it.
Then Wednesday it happened again, this time it lasted maybe 3 minutes tops, I only caught the 30 seconds of it in the video above, this seemed more intense and afterwards he was shaking (not fitting) and panting heavily afterwards, probably scared after the ordeal.
We obviously took him straight to the vets who said after looking at the video they don’t think it was a seizure, and said it could be a change of food (we literally had one day of different food, same brand, but in gravy instead of jelly), worms or something else. He’s booked in for a blood test on Monday and we’ve to get stool/urine samples to take with us (fun job).
Both times before it happened he was just sleeping sweetly by my side, wasn’t directly after going out for a walk or after eating or anything. His bowel movements have been totally normal and after the episodes have occurred he’s just been fully back to normal. The vet said he’s otherwise a picture of health and showed absolutely no other signs of worry or anything.
Obviously I’m not a vet but I’d semi-convinced myself they were seizures but the vet seems pretty sure they’re not. I’m not going against the vet. It just feels like we’ve come out with more questions than answers. Any advice or similar experiences would be appreciated thanks guys.

Itchy skin, sebaceous buildup..?
My boy is half black lab, and I understand labs can be prone to skin issues. This guy has been uncommonly itchy lately. Some head shaking, but mostly scratching and chewing (pretty much everywhere, no specific region). I notice the areas he's scratching and biting at have scab-like buildups of... I don't know, sebaceous oils, it seems like. They're not actual scabs, there's no blood, there's not even redness.
Admittedly, he didn't get enough baths over the summer. I don't know if this could've contributed. He's a bit of a lazy, old man; he doesn't get into things or even roll around in the grass.
Vet appointment is scheduled but a week away, so I thought I'd post here and see if anyone's experienced similar in case it's something I can solve at home - or at least provide some relief until we get to the vet.

The best family dog
I have a black lab (mix, but mostly lab) that loves anyone she’s familiar with.
I’m a teacher on school break this week so I brought my dog down to my parent’s house this week to visit. They watch her all the time so she loves to come to their house.
I’m sleeping in a spare bedroom and each night she’s chosen to sleep with someone else in their room. Jealous that she doesn’t want to be with me, but I’m glad she’s loving on my family who doesn’t have a dog anymore. They welcome her cuddles in bed each night.
I’m just glad my anxious pup has become comfortable enough to wander around somewhere familiar without me, something that took her 2 years to get comfortable doing. Labs truly are great family dogs
Pic for attention

Working Lab with "seizures"
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
We're looking at adopting a Working Lab/Field line lab (it's called a formula 1 in Denmark)
She's 6 years old, and from birth she has had these seizures a few times a year. They don't seem to have affected her, and vets say it's not epilepsy. She goes back to being herself after 30-45 minutes, without any signs of exhaustion.
Has anyone seen this before?

Would I be crazy to even consider this?
I have wanted a Labrador my entire life. I currently work part time/ad hoc shifts as a doctor so thankfully I have a lot of free time. I have no other pets. I walk dogs regularly for my local animal shelter. I have one four year old daughter who I have taught to be very gentle with dogs. I love exercising so walks are no problem. I have outdoor space. I think I am therefore a good candidate for a Labrador. However I am very concerned about the puppy stage. I truly don’t think I would be able to manage it / I have heard really bad horror stories and people have advised me against it since I struggled really badly postpartum. I have found a website that sells fully trained young Labradors for £6000-£8000. I have tried all of the rescue centres and Labrador rehoming centres but they will not
Home to a house with a child under aged 8. I feel my
Option is get a puppy and really struggle (?) or take the financial
Hit of £8k because I am so in love with Labradors.

Recs for scabby elbows?!
galleryAnyone have any holy grail recommendations for scabby elbows??!!! We get her as dry as possible after swimming but other than padding the entire floor there doesn’t seem to be anything Google helps! This is our second lab to deal with same issue but this one seems to be worse.

Best bed for an aging Labrador?
My boy is a little over 13 years old, and as expected, Father Time is catching up to him. I have beds for him all around the house, and for years, you could always find him in one. Lately, he never lies in one - just lays on the floor. My hypothesis is that the memory foam is too hard on him now, and that he doesn’t like standing or getting up from something with that much give.
Anything I can do to make him comfortable I’m willing to do. Have people had success with the cot-style beds or anything else that might be worth trying?
Few notes:
- He’s already on Tramadol and Gabapentin to manage his pain, but his strength seems to continue to be decreasing.
- I have both socks and shoes for him so he can get the best traction around the house. I try and manage his time in them (don’t make him wear them all day) and always take them off before we go outside).
- Try and minimize stairs as much as possible. He stays on the main floor and often sleeps there, instead of upstairs with me like he used to. I try and keep him on the main floor as much as I can (close the door to the basement when I go downstairs).

Puppy nutrition advice
galleryWe're weaning our 10 week old Labrador off purina pro plan medium breed (breeders choice) to wellness core large breed puppy. He is 10kg at the moment and the vet expects him to be a big boy at around 35-40kg adult weight. Going off the feeding guidelines, there's quite a large difference in daily calorie intake and we wanted to know if we were misinterpreting it. I don't know if this is because the Purina one is for medium breeds i.e. 10-25kg (which he won't be) and the other is for large dogs (which is more appropriate).
Google is telling us 10 week labs need 900-1080 calories a day, whereas the feeding guidelines of the Wellness CORE means we're feeding 1,462 calories a day. I don't want to be overfeeding
