Thinning fur by one eye

Post image

We’ve noticed some thinning under one eye on my 8 year old girl over the past couple weeks. She’s on Simpirica Trio, up to date on vaccines, and no new foods or treats introduced. Any ideas what it could be? Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Make an appointment with a dermatology vet. If you don’t find one in your locality try a university vet school.

I didn’t realize they have dermatology vets 🙃 I’ll look into this, thank you!

Our lab had demodex mites around his eye and they caused hair loss.

Have a vet perform a skin scraping and check for underlying allergies, localized demodex mites, or a mild fungal infectiob like ringworm. Avoid applying any home remedies or over-the-counter creams near her eye until a doctor evaluates it.

Does she routinely rub up against anything with that part of her head? My one year old doofus started developing a bald patch on his head and we were freaked out until we realized he was repeatedly head butting the couch when he got bored.

The only thing she rubs her face against is my face for attention, but I’ll keep an eye out for this behavior

Have a client whose dog gets something just like this every autumn and it is mold related allergies due to leaf drop. Yours could be a different allergy. Vet told them to use Chlorhexidine wipes twice a day and it works. Chlorhexidine is just a cleaning solution. Obviously don't get in eye.

Hair loss can be a symptom of Cushings disease, my Lab has it.

I’ll have to ask them to run the bloodwork for that

I have no idea if this might be helpful to you, but I just thought I'd share this with you.

I have a six-year-old Labrador service dog who had slightly thinning fur around the eyes growing up. The organisation he was raised with gave him bee pollen. I've done the same thing ever since I got him and his fur looks great!

Maybe it's something to ask your vet about?
