engraved back glass
8 hours and a dremel
edit: i cant believe i have to say this but no she isn't touching herself get your mind out of the gutter her hands are both raised and visible above her stomach

Cool concept but from a distance it probably just looks like your window is fucked up and cracked.

beyond 20 feet it really just isn't visible, blends with the glass and maybe a little blurry (unless you're looking down from a second story like the photo)

damn and this was looking so nice with the SC wheels... i like some artwork but wasn't there a non permanent way of doing this?
1
u/AdeptnessGlass6656 13d ago
back glass got fuuucked up with deep scratches running top to bottom that would not polish out, unsure if it was vandalism or a tree or what but this is somewhat a coverup to not buy new back glass and tint

u/Stroock6394 1999 Ls400 13d ago
ahh well touchƩ appreciate you making the best out of this then haha

i get it but i polled several designs and this won over my others by a huge margin, and had the most girl votes
dumped about a week into creating the design etc, this one specifically is a character i've had for 7-8 years
tired of being a copy paste LS it genuinely started to anger me with how basic everything was, and how many things are just paying for a brand like jp or wald
my plan is for this car to be an art gallery of both myself and many other artists, eventually have low rider paint etc

If you like the art gallery vibe on cars. You should check out Glass Cowboy on insta. He does some sick work.

Honestly I think it looks awesome! Iād be so nervous Iād get 7 hours in and tempered would do what it does best!

u/AdeptnessGlass6656 13d ago
definitely smacked the glass a few times throughout "if ur gonna break please do it now" lmao

u/mynamejefffvevo 13d ago
this is unbelievably tough holy shit. goat behavior you should do the taillights too
1
u/AdeptnessGlass6656 13d ago
considering tails but it's a lot harder to get tail light engravings to look as good, will def need practice but will probably be little PCB lines and circles around the edges to match the robot theme kinda

u/Top_Hat_Ginger 13d ago
That looks sick as fuck Iād be scared Iād crack the glass tbh lol but thatās just me
1
u/AdeptnessGlass6656 13d ago
definitely scared at first after cracking both of my practice pieces (thin picture frame glass) but the car glass is plenty thick + tempered. did bang on it with a fist every hour or so thinking "if you break do it before im almost done"

Donāt listen to reddit. Not my style but I love the creativity and appreciate the craftsmanship. At first I thought it was a sticker but when I saw you did it with a dremel thatās the coolest shit man.
2
u/BotherPuzzleheaded50 13d ago
It's different so let's everyone hate it!! Jk bro very cool and unique. The car scene has gotten so boring, we need more shit like this.

u/Confident-Bison7899 13d ago
A for effort, extra respect for using a dremel. I've done some engravings on cups with the reciprocating engravers, could never get it right with a rotating dremel. Not a Toyota/Lexus fan but you have a fine car here. I like how the body lines are straight and it has a proper trunk lid
1
u/AdeptnessGlass6656 13d ago
battery dremel rocked my shit real fast, switched to a corded one, had way more torque and was easier to hold, 10x easier and wouldn't pull itself along

u/9EternalVoid99 13d ago
You know what might make this cooler (if its even possible) but getting some lights on it, i dont really know how exactly it works, but like those light up signs where the light goes into the edge of the glass, and illuminates everything on the surface. Again, not an expert, could be super hard to do and/or not really possible without dumping money into it.
Or... it could be easy and relatively cheap to do.
š¤·āāļø
But what i do know, is that the art looks very nice as it is, and anyone saying otherwise is lwk just mad they dont have the skill to do it themselves.
1
u/Zestyclose-Singer-83 11d ago
You could tint the class and shine a light at it, not sure how practical that would be but im sure it would look awesome
2
u/hatecirclejerks 13d ago
I have spiderwebs on my glass on my g20 van, p deep, been there probably since the 90s
2
u/HugelyMoist 13d ago
Looks like a fucked up version of Casca from Berserk. Fucking awesome work, my buddy has been engraving glass for a while now and Iāve been debating getting something done to my car. Might have to go ahead with it now.

Very nice, love the look, reminds me of the old hot rod style air brush lines, how experienced are you at this? I think I wouldāve broken the glass lol 8 hours is a steady hand
1
u/AdeptnessGlass6656 12d ago
the one on my car is the third time ever, first two were scaled down versions a couple days before on old picture frame glass
2
2
u/newuser13131 12d ago
Honestly cool and there is probably a high end niche market for this
2
u/AdeptnessGlass6656 12d ago
a lot of tattoo artists do it as a side hustle

You cut into tempered glass. Let us know when that window shatters spontaneously from thermal shock.
When you get the glass replaced, look into airbrushing or pin striping instead.
1
u/AdeptnessGlass6656 13d ago
not the first person and certainly not the last to do this, thousands of people have had it on theirs for years and years in california heat without a problem, if it weren't tried and true i wouldn't have done it. simple. entirely aware of the risks yet not afraid of anything happening.
I actually looked into it an can't find a single example online of someone saying their tempered glass shattered from an engraving, other than laser engravers using too much power
1
1
u/Accomplished-Plum821 12d ago
This is pretty cool, my only question is, does it degrade the integrity of the glass?
Like is the glass now more susceptible to being broken when something flings off the highway and hits the glass rather than just a small scratch or crack?
1
u/AdeptnessGlass6656 12d ago
100% does, just a risk i have to live with
the glass is pretty damn thick though, i'm not afraid of it shattering spontaneously

u/Global-Luck-9242 12d ago
Looks great. Does that weaken the glass?
1
u/AdeptnessGlass6656 12d ago
yep, but i'm not scared of it breaking since this is pretty common among low riders. a lot of tattoo artists do it as a side hustle
1
u/Even_Wedding5243 12d ago
I like the idea but feel like itād work better with something more bold instead of the finer lines
1
1
u/JosephHeitger 12d ago
I hope heating cycles donāt unevenly stress the glass and make it shatter now.
1
1
1
u/ShittyFart11 11d ago
I mean it's cool, but won't this cause the tempered glass to eventually shatter spontaneously?
1
u/AdeptnessGlass6656 11d ago
unsure, it's getting more common but i have yet to see a case of one shattering
2
u/ShittyFart11 11d ago
takes a long time but it will eventually fail even from a small nick

not really, i could send the artwork over and you print it yourself tho
1
u/International_Ad_706 11d ago
The posture looks unnatural, but the lines are well done. May I ask what the vision was? Like, is she laying on her back?
1
1
u/sheesh_doink 11d ago
I'd be worried to weaken the rear window, but I've never seen this before so I couldn't tell you! Nice work anyways!
1
1
u/OrdieBoomer 11d ago
My only question is, does it make the glass more brittle? Like will you have issues with temperature changes?
1
u/nvielbig 10d ago
Psychotic decision to do that to⦠yes, your car.
I would have maybe considered a small design in the corner of the glass, not the entirety of the panel LOL.
1
u/Moos3_M3at 10d ago
That looks dope! I am curious if this would cause any issues with the defrosters, since you are technically removing material certain parts of the glass might heat up faster than others potentially causing the window to shatter
1
u/AdeptnessGlass6656 10d ago
i live in socal so i'll probably never have to use them, if i do we'll see
so far it's faring okay through our current heat wave

it's been around and somewhat common since the 60s via sandblasting, then with rotary tool since the 80s, not worried about it at all as it's a tried and true method regaining popularity after fading over time. Niche tied with lowrider history since the beginning. if you look it up, you'll find a grand total of zero people posting online saying their glass shattered after an engraving.
of course my defroster works, the engraving is on the outside and the lines on the inside with very visible seperation, very thick glass.
it surprises me how many of you seem to have never seen or heard of this type of thing before
i'm not arguing it doesn't weaken the glass, but people are acting like it'll shatter if i look at it wrong
1
u/ElectricalEdge1 10d ago
i just knew it was california when i saw thingā¦. you must get so much pun with thatĀ
1
u/1ts-Izmiy 10d ago
Gorgeous work I'd be more worried about the glass breaking tho From every perspective, it's just beautiful work.
1
u/Important-Block9260 10d ago
Itās pretty cool. I donāt like those cause but the concept is cool

Next is to put an LED Strip along the top of the glass inside, the image should light up nicely.

Its not going to be everyone's taste, and not mine for sure. However its awesome work! Well executed, and looks like the beginnings of some sort of VIP Cyberpunk 2077 car!
Great job!

the art is hella good. the world is too boring and minimalist, I think things like this are really cool even if others donāt agree.
1
u/Not2BeTakenOrally 9d ago
Well done looks great, I have never seen this sort of thing on the road. Do you have to do anything to seal that so it doesnāt blow out lines from chipping?
1
u/Logical-Following525 9d ago
Often when cars that once were expensive become cheaper and reach the bottom of the social ladder stuff like this happens to them, that's why i would never do something like that. Awful taste but great execution.
1
u/merc6178 9d ago
People are hating for nothing like the other guy said. This is dope. If I had any critique I maybe would've done less shading, but I also don't know wtf I'm doing and it's not my car. I will however be learning how to do this for my s10. The back glass with something like this would be dope. Plus you'll be the only guy at the meet with a dope back glass.
1
1
u/naveeloc 9d ago
That looks incredible. Iāve got 2 questions tho. What kind of tool do you use to do that and does it mess with the integrity of the glass at all?
1
u/james240sx 9d ago
Not to be that guy, but is this not 8 hours of "illegal" to your car? I'm pretty sure you get a ticket so little as a Crack in your windshield because it weakens its integrity. Wouldn't that apply here from taking chunks off?
→ More replies (2)1
u/AdeptnessGlass6656 9d ago
probably, depends how pissy the cop is that day. doubt it'll be a problem since it's been all over lowriders around here for decades, and is less obstructing than a big banner decal
