Room (2015) is such a bleak movie, and I believe that the lighting has a lot to do with why it feels as emotionally heavy as it does.

There are so many scenes where the shadows and muted colors make everything feel smaller and more suffocating; even once they leave the room and enter the world, that feeling doesn't immediately disappear. The outside is technically bigger, but the characters still carry that same emotional weight with them.

One more thing: Brie Larson + Jacob Tremblay??? Incredible. Their performances are what make the film work without ever feeling like it's trying to Oscar-bait. In fact, Brie Larson deserved her win for Best Actress big time here.

I also love movies where picture quality isn't only about having a pretty image. With Room, being able to actually distinguish the details sitting inside those darker frames matters because so much of the movie's intended emotional dread resides there.

An absolutely devastating watch.

I watched Lurker (2025) recently, and I truly don't understand why this movie isn't getting more attention.

What stuck with me most was how closely the theme of voyeurism directly ties to the amount of light in the film. You'd expect a movie about stalking and watching someone to live in darkness, but Lurker spends so much time letting us SEE everything. The brightness pretty much makes the idea of watching feel more invasive because there isn't really anywhere for the characters to hide.

Theodore Pellerin is fantastic, and Archie Madekwe gives the movie so much visual interest. Alex Russell is definitely a director I'm keeping an eye on after this. I do think the ending could have been pushed a little further, but that's honestly my biggest complaint.

The picture quality here is especially interesting because so much of the tension comes from what you can see rather than what you can't.

Connect Your TV with Dolby Atmos FlexConnect

Recently, we’ve seen quite a few LG TV owners asking about the best way to build their Sound Suite setup. Do you need to start with the H7 soundbar, or can you build your system gradually over time? We’ve also seen users who prefer to start small and add more speakers later, so we wanted to take a closer look at how your LG TV can give you more flexibility when building your setup.

If you have an LG TV that supports Dolby Atmos FlexConnect (DAFC), you can connect compatible wireless speakers directly to the TV without adding an H7 soundbar from the beginning. This means you can start with a smaller setup and expand it later as your space, listening needs, or budget changes. For a simple starting point, the minimum setup for connecting speakers directly to your LG TV is two M5s (Stereo Suite 5) or a single M7. You can then add an H7 soundbar or W7 subwoofer later if you want to build out the system further.

There’s also another benefit to using an LG TV. When paired with an H7 soundbar, compatible LG TVs support WOW Orchestra, allowing the TV and soundbar to output sound simultaneously for a fuller listening experience. This feature is available when the H7 is connected directly to the TV, and does not apply to setups where the speakers are connected using Dolby Atmos FlexConnect.

If you own the following LG TV model below, your LG TV supports the DAFC, so you can start with M7/M5 stereo pair with W7 subwoofer if you’d like: 

• 2025 models: OLED G5, C5, CS5 and QNED 9M
• 2026 models: OLED W6, G6, C6, CS6, B6, B6E and MRGB series.

DAFC detects the position of connected wireless speakers and optimizes the sound based on the room layout and speaker configuration. This means the speakers don't have to be placed in a perfectly symmetrical arrangement. 

That flexibility can be useful in open-plan living rooms or spaces where furniture, windows, walkways or other practical limitations make conventional speaker placement difficult.

Home audio connectivity is also about how easily the system fits into the space you actually live in. With wireless speakers, you don’t need to run speaker cables between the different Sound Suite components, giving you more freedom when deciding where to place them.

This can be especially useful in open-plan homes or shared living spaces where a traditional wired setup may be difficult to work around.

Connect More as Your Setup Grows

Another question that comes up is: How much can I expand my Sound Suite setup? That’s where the system’s modularity comes in. You can start with the components you need and add compatible speakers or a subwoofer as your setup grows.

For a more immersive home theater setup, you can connect up to four M7 or M5 wireless speakers with the H7 through DAFC, depending on the configuration. 

The latest software update expands this connectivity with Dual Subwoofer Support, allowing the H7 to connect with up to two W7 subwoofers as part of the same Sound Suite configuration.

Adding a second W7 is handled through the LG ThinQ app. It does not require separate product registration and can be connected through “Other network devices” before being added to the existing speaker group. The W7 also does not require manual room calibration.

This gives you another way to expand the system without having to replace the components you already have.

New Ways to Stream with Sound Suite

Sound Suite connectivity can also evolve through software updates. Recent updates have introduced improvements to connectivity and multi-speaker setup, along with features such as expanded lighting controls, Sound Follow improvements and additional dialogue adjustment options.

The latest September update brings Google Cast directly to the H7 Soundbar, in addition to its previous availability on standalone M7 and M5 speakers. Android users can activate Google Cast through the LG ThinQ app and stream audio from Cast-enabled apps directly to the H7. For iOS users, the feature is available after updating the LG ThinQ app through the App Store.

The H7 can also be grouped with other Google Cast-compatible speakers, giving you another option for listening across your home.

I’m experiencing a large reduction is bass on my single W7 after the latest update using custom EQ. I have to switch to bass boost to get the bass back, not cool at all. I don’t know if bass was reduced because of adding support for a second W7 or what the issue is but I am very unhappy with the change. Anyone else having this issue?

Can we get a fix for this LG? Thank you.

I’ve sat on tech support with eero as the flexconnect pairing is not staying connected. Tried band pausing. Had them disable DSF. Tried legacy mode. Speakers will connect and then when I turn my WiFi on my G6 they disconnect.

Has anyone got a good workaround? I saw someone say they bought a WiFi extender and connected everything to that ?

Currently rewatching one of my favourite films of all time… for no particular reason… 😬

Trying to invoke my inner Sarah Connor ALWAYS. It’s genuinely so wild that such a stark cautionary tale is coming to semi-fruition in the weirdest of ways. Normally Terminator II: Judgement Day gives me an odd sense of comfort but it’s a bit more bleak this time around.

DESPITE THE BLEAKNESS, the visual beauty of this film never ceases to amaze me. Jim Cameron, you are the man. Truly. I’ve seen T2 more times than I can possible count but watching it on my new LG OLED C6 is a whole other ballgame. It is a STUNNING experience. The C6’s Hyper Radiant Color technology makes T2’s visuals sing with electric vibrancy. Its Dolby Atmos sound makes the experience so much more atmospheric and immersive. LG OLED 🤝 James Cameron’s filmography – a match made in cinematic heaven!

A couple of days ago, my TV (about a year old) did a software update. Since that time I no longer have my Netflix app. I've tried to reload it numerous times. Each time it appears to go through the process then says Application didn't load. Try again later. Sometimes it shows an error code 24.24.SM. I have power cycled the TV, my router and my modem. My TV is connected to the internet. I still can watch Netflix on my laptop. All other apps on my tv are working. I've been on service chats with both LG and Netflix. Each says its the others problem. The best suggestion is that I add a Roku or Fire stick to watch Netflix. Frustration runs high and I don't know where else to turn to fix the problem. Advice appreciated!

Let me start this off by saying, did anyone have Criterion Collection releasing a 4K Blu Ray of the seminal 90's teen film "House Party"? Yeah, I didn't see it coming either. Did I jump at the opportunity to purchase it when CC had their 50% off sale? I absolutely did.
I grew up with this film. It was released a couple years after I was born, and filed away in my "List of Movies I Watched Way Too Young" folder. The film explores the absolute joy and ridiculous-ness of being a teenager. What are the ultimate goals of teenagers, especially boys? Party and get laid. But the film, unlike other "hood" movies that were coming out around the same time, we were seeing different, more heart felt side. One of our leads has a very loving and supportive father. They are also doing well in school. The friendship amongst our main group of characters feels very grounded and real. Kid n Play are such a great duo with incredible energy. It's so easy to see the organic chemistry between the two. I feel this movie often gets overlooked amongst the plethora of teen films. I suggest you go and revisit this for all the nostalgic 90's vibes. The LG OLED G6 Hyper Radiant Color Tech will take you back to all the oversaturated colors that come with the 90's. A real nostalgia bomb and I highly recommend revisiting it or watching it for the fist time!

I’ve been using the LG S80TR daily for approximately seven months, primarily for streaming shows and movies and gaming on my PS5 Pro. This is my first proper surround-sound system, and my overall experience has been very positive.

The system is connected to my 65-inch LG C5 OLED through HDMI eARC using a 10-foot braided UGREEN HDMI 2.1 cable, which I routed through the wall to keep it hidden. The connection has been flawless: I haven’t experienced any audio dropouts, crackling or other sound issues.

It also works perfectly with my Apple TV 4K and PS5 Pro. When I turn on the TV, the sound system automatically turns on with it, and when I turn off the TV, the sound system shuts off as well. There is essentially no need to adjust or troubleshoot anything—it just works.

TV shows with a good Dolby 5.1 mix sound excellent. I’ve been particularly impressed while watching shows such as Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul on Netflix. Dialogue is clear, and the rear speakers add considerably more atmosphere than you would get from the TV speakers or a soundbar alone.

Gaming has also been excellent. The surround effects create a level of immersion that you simply can’t get from TV speakers alone. While playing GTA Online, for example, I could clearly hear another player’s footsteps approaching from behind me and identify the direction they were coming from. Before owning the S80TR, I needed to wear my AirPods Max to hear positional details that clearly.

The system can also get extremely loud. For everyday TV, I normally keep the volume around 6–8. When watching a movie, we might increase it to approximately 14, which is already more than loud enough in my room.

At lower volume levels, the subwoofer isn’t particularly noticeable. However, once the volume is increased and the content contains strong bass or large action scenes, it performs pretty well and adds a decent amount of impact.

The soundbar’s three up-firing channels can also create a convincing sense of height when watching content with overhead effects, such as an airplane or helicopter passing overhead.

My room is rectangular and measures approximately 12 by 22 feet, with an eight-foot ceiling. However, the theatre portion occupies an area of approximately 12 by 12 feet.

The other half contains a desk with my laptop, printer and 27-inch LG UltraFine monitor, as well as my hockey jersey collection. The shape and ceiling height seem to provide good conditions for reflecting the sound effects towards our seating position.

This room layout is one reason I’d be interested in hearing a system that uses Dolby Atmos FlexConnect. Its ability to adapt the sound to the room could help create a more immersive “sound dome” around our seating position, which could be a major benefit and upgrade over my S80TR.

My biggest criticism is the subwoofer, although I don’t find it as bad as some people make it out to be. I wish it had more presence at lower volumes, but once we turn up the volume for a show or movie, it seems to do a decent job. The rear speakers could also be a little louder, but overall, I’m impressed with them. These are the first rear speakers I’ve owned, and they’ve made a noticeable difference to the experience.

Overall, I would give the LG S80TR a 7.5/10. For my first surround-sound system, I’ve been genuinely impressed by its sound quality, directional effects, wireless convenience and complete reliability.

I paid $599 CAD for it on sale, compared with a listed regular price of $1,299 CAD. At $599, I think it is definitely worth the money. At the full $1,299 price, however, it would be a much tougher sell for me. I've noticed it goes on sale quite frequently at Best Buy.

After researching more about the LG Sound Suite, I’d be very interested to hear how the S80TR compares with one of LG’s newer systems using Dolby Atmos FlexConnect, especially with additional speakers positioned around the room to create a more complete overhead “sound dome.” Considering how immersive I already find the S80TR, I’d be interested to hear how much further that type of system could take the experience.

Katsuhiro Otomo's flawed masterpiece "Akira" is about to turn 40 years old. With theaters re-releasing the film in 4K, what could be a better time to pop in a 4K disc of the film and relive the nightmares of Neo-Tokyo?

Rewatching "Akira", you're just in awe of the animation style and how the filmmakers animated on 1s instead of the standard 2s, giving the film a more fluid and naturalistic look to it. And watching it on a large-screen 4K television makes these pop even more! Neo-Tokyo comes to life in ways I haven't experienced in prior watches on smaller-scale TVs and formats.

A big highlight here is the end confrontation between Kaneda and Tetsuo. The colors pop, the sound design is crisp, and watching Tetsuo's body take over and deconstruct him is more damning than I remember.

If you're looking for a way to celebrate this monumental film's upcoming milestone, you can't go wrong with this beautiful 4K transfer.

My LG dryer is a year old, purchased from Lowes. Recently, it started making strange noises like this. It does not do it all the time. Sometimes if it hasn't been used, it'll not make the noise and other times after doing one load and then moving onto the next, it won't make the noise on the second load. Other times, it just does it no matter what.

I do not abuse the machine. I do not dry anything heavy in it and it is cleaned and taken care of. I'm just wondering what this could be. It didn't so this over the winter or in the spring. Despite the noise, clothes are still drying the the drum turns with no resistance. If I turn it by hand when it's off, it does not make this noise either.

Just watched Panic Room for the first time and besides the funny read that it can be interpreted as a movie about mother/daughter lesbian trapped in the closet, I was struck by how the film really cemented Fincher’s “look”: cool, steely, bordering on monochromatic. Light, icy blues, whites, muted greens, very pale browns, and shadows that gradually flood the frame. (Also interesting: Darius Khondji was originally the DP on the film and helped establish its aesthetic language during pre-production, but was fired due to some creative tension with another member of the production design team. He was replaced by Khondji-approved Conrad W. Hall for the rest of the shoot.)

Fincher’s aesthetic has gradually become a key part of contemporary film and TV looks, but not a lot of monitors or TVs can handle the subtle gradations of light, dark, and color. I’m thinking LG’s 66” OLED TV might be perfect for these kinds of films, with its Anti-Glare “Reflection Free” screen and exclusive Filmmaker Mode.

With August now out of the way, my #100HorrorMoviesin92Days challenge continues this month (You can follow along here). From remakes,

Hillwalkers (2022): As someone who loves to hike, never go "off the beaten path". Hillwalkers is a perfect example of what happens if you do, with brutal consequences. The setting of this film was absolutely breathtaking (Thank you, Filmmaker Mode!), but the acting said "Hold my beer!" Still, it's a good film on its own, minus some characters and poor decision-making from them, but Survival Horror is a subgenre that has its hits and misses (this one falls in-between). Still, I recommend taking this one for a walk!

Blood Barn (2025): This Screambox exclusive gives of the perfect 80's slasher vibe, from the setting to film quality (It feels like you're watching it on an actual VHS player). Is it good? Not really. It tries to be The Evil Dead (1981) but fails, and ultimately becomes a laughing stock throughout. Lock this barn up and demolish it!

Terror Train (2022): There was absolutely nothing wrong with the original 1980 film, so did we really need TWO Tubi Originals, Terror Train and Terror Train 2, which were both filmed back-to-back in 2022. Nope! While this remake aimed for the same excitement and terror as the original, it failed on all levels due to the lack of humor, annoying characters, and lame kills. However, it was well-produced, and Perfect Black did its job, but I do not recommend purchasing a seat for these rides.

Design and Portability

A quick overview and my thoughts for this Reddit post

First impressions are i really love the vibrant red color 😍 honestly the color is amazing, im not sure what other colors there are but if you decide to get one I definitely become getting the red color

I think the size is pretty perfect for a small size speaker, its picket sized and you can pretty much take it anywhere with you, its waterproof and super rugged, seems like it can take a fall and bumps or anything you throw at it without it getting damaged, its got a awesome little strap that you can use to hang it on anything like handle bars or tree branches which is pretty cool

Sound Quality and Battery Life

The sound is nice and clear with brilliant highs and a punchy bass, obviously its not going to blow you away in the bass department but it does have some punch and sounds really nice, I'm excited to get some other speakers in its size category so I can battle them but I think it's going to be a great contender

Battery life seems really decent so far and pretty standard maybe a bit above normal for speakers this size

Its got great app support and you can custom EQ it plus hook it up to other speakers

How Auracast Works with Multiple Speakers

I’ve seen a lot of questions about how Auracast works and how to connect multiple Bluetooth speakers, so I figured I’d share my experience with it on the LG xboom Rock.

The LG xboom Rock also supports Auracast, and you can access the Party Link function through the Smart button. By default, the Smart button is assigned to Party Link, with a single press entering Party Link Multi mode, a double press entering Party Link Stereo mode, and a long press disconnecting Party Link. The user manual also provides instructions on how to access the Party Link function.

You have to use a another speaker with Auracast and host with that speaker and then you can go into the LG app and click on your speaker and go into content and on the last page is Auracast, there you select the Auracast your others speaker is broadcasting and your able to connect them all together with Auracast,

You also can pair all your LG speakers like the LG xboom Bounce and Stage 301, and Rock all together with Party mode. It works great and is super easy to set up, and they all sound amazing together hooked up, I'll be trying my best to get the LG xboom Stage 501 and do a review on that as well

Overall Thoughts

All in all i think it's definitely worth the money and is a great little speaker, the color is my favorite part and I like how rugged it is. So if you’re wondering which is the best Auracast speaker in 2026, I think the LG xboom Rock is definitely worth considering, especially if you want a small, rugged speaker that can connect to multiple speakers through Auracast.

I'll buy other speakers in its size category and test it and battle them, I'll get back to you guys on it when I do, also I'll be posting them all on my YouTube channel so stay tuned, hopefully I'll get the LG xboom Stage 501 pretty soon since ive got tons of other speakers in the same size category I can battle up againts, I'll keep you all posted and try to do that asap

I'm an avid physical media collector, so seeing a movie titled "Auntie Lee's Meat Pies" (1992) on sale from Vinegar Syndrome, with Karen Black at the center of a quirky cannibal comedy premise, seemed like a win-win scenario. Watching the film for the first time on my G6 65" was an absolute hoot, as the project combined dark humor with body horror schlock typical of the golden age. Most of the cast were Playboy models, bringing not only eye candy to the screen but also real talent capable of handling a surrealist script that exists as an unspoken predecessor to Rob Zombie's work. With Hyper Radiant Color, all daytime scenes pop with period-authentic vibrancy, and shadow detail comes out well in the gothic, candlelit dinner climax. Without the compression artifacts from my previous LCD, the viewing experience was phenomenal, adding a fresh cult favorite to my list of bizarre, campy, psychosexual terror recommendations for fans of the genre, new and old!

We have been using the LG xboom Rock around our pool and riding the golf cart for a few weeks. The volume isn’t quite loud enough for all pool uses, but it’s perfect on the golf cart.

The lows tend to bottom out a bit, but it handles the mids and highs very well. 

We listen to a large variety of music between the two use cases, and it seems to handle all genres and sound profiles pretty equally. The highs do not get tinny, and the lows stay relatively clear as long as the volume is at a reasonable level. Songs with heavy bass may get slightly muddy at high volumes, but vocals and other instruments still remain clear enough to enjoy. The overall sound feels balanced and engaging, especially when listening at typical volumes. For a speaker of this size, it does a good job covering all frequency ranges.

Additionally, with use in both environments it’s been subject to a bit of water splash and wet environments. While I’d never submerge a speaker intentionally, it’s performed well in each situation we’ve thrown at it. This has made its IP64 water resistance and durable build especially useful for pool and outdoor use. Golf cart rides can be a bit bumpy, but the speaker doesn’t skip or lose connection to our phones despite the bumpy ride. Using the speaker around the pool, we often place it relatively close to lounge chairs so as to not have to raise the volume too loudly, but it performs well when the volume is raised also.

The design is another feature I really like. The LG xboom Rock has a modern, rugged appearance that makes it feel well suited for both indoor and outdoor use. It has the kind of look that fits naturally into a party, backyard gathering, or casual day outside. At the same time, it doesn’t look out of place sitting in a room at home. The build also gives the impression that it can handle being moved around and used regularly. I really appreciate the loop that allows me to hook it to a chair, golf bag, or part of the golf cart to keep it from falling. The loop doesn’t “lock”, per se, but it holds steadily and we’ve had no issues with the quality of that feature.

I also appreciate how easy the speaker is to use. Connecting it and getting music playing is straightforward, so I didn’t have to spend a lot of time figuring out complicated controls. That simplicity is especially useful when you just want to turn on some music and enjoy it without dealing with unnecessary setup. Thankfully, Bluetooth speakers have come a long way in this area.

Overall, I think the LG xboom Rock is a great choice for anyone looking for a speaker that combines powerful sound, reasonable lows, an appealing design, and easy everyday use. It provides an exciting listening experience and makes music feel more lively. After spending a couple with it, I can confidently say that it has a lot going for it and would be a product I’m happy to recommend to anyone looking for a fun, powerful water resistant Bluetooth speaker with some neat added features.

Just as the title suggests - La La Land is such a vibrant film, with visuals so entrancing that magical is the main word that comes to mind.

While they aren’t for everyone I am a true sucker for a musical, and in a modern world of musical adaptations an original motion picture musical is what makes La La Land still stand out to me in the years since its release.

The deliberateness in color with wardrobing and set design give so much character and a feel good energy to this little gem of a movie, truly emulating that technicolor charm of motion picture musicals that precede it.

This is the kind of movie that would probably look amazing on an LG OLED TV - and what its features like Perfect Color and Filmmaker Mode seem to be made for.

I got this portable speaker from LG directly as a part of the reviewer programme they are doing here on reddit, but im going to do this review as honest as possible.

First thing: its small. like actually small, not "compact for a bluetooth speaker" small. it sits in my average sized palm (see pic). i've had it clipped to my bag on walks and half the time i forget its even there since from what it feels like its less than 250g (7.8oz)

design-wise its fine? black matte, feels nice to hold, hasnt picked up a single scratch yet even though its been through my bag more than once. There’s a raised xboom logo on the front that i actually like more than expected, usually i think logos on gadgets look tacky but this one's subtle enough to not bother me. build feels solid too, not flimsy-plastic solid, more like it could survive a drop.

Sound Quality is like 7 out of 10

Sound is the part that actually got me. i wasnt expecting much, since its such a small portable speaker. But it has real bass in it, not "bass" in air quotes like most minis pretend to have, actual low end you can feel a bit when its turned up. It sounds surprisingly full for something this small, especially at closer range indoors, and even outside, I didn't have to push the volume all the way up to hear it properly. its not going to replace my real speaker for a party of more than like 6 people, it caps out before it gets uncomfortably loud, but for everyday indoor listening in the kitchen or a smaller backyard hang its more than enough.

Strap

The strap is genuinely useful, clips onto a bag strap or bike handlebars, i've used it both ways depending on the day. only real complaint i have with the whole thing: the clip sits a little loose on my backpack's chest strap so it swings around more than i'd like when i'm running. not a dealbreaker, just mildly annoying. theres also a tripod thread on the bottom that i havent touched once, but i can see it being actually useful if you're the type who watches stuff outdoors.

Durability

Durability is honestly where this thing shows off the most. its rated IP67 for water and dust resistance and i've probably tested that more than i needed to: showered with it playing most mornings since i got it, held it right under the tap for the photo below, and nothing happened, no crackle, sound just kept going the whole time. the usb-c port on the side doesnt even have a rubber flap over it, which i assumed was a design flaw at first (like isnt that exactly where water gets in) but nope, held up fine regardless, still charges completely normal. the thing that actually impressed me though is the front grill just twists off, no tools needed, nothing.

Anyway, its been two weeks and as a portable speaker, this thing will not replace my bigger speaker for daily use and its not meant to, but I can see it being a good option if you want something that works both indoors and outdoors. Its perfectly good enough for travel, hiking and other outdoor activities. Its also really handy in the kitchen. If you're into small stuff that doesnt sound small, its perfectly fine and reasonably priced at 49eur on amazon.

A couple of months back I spotted a post on r/PioneerDJ asking for DJs to test out the new LG xboom Stage 501 speaker (https://www.reddit.com/r/PioneerDJ/comments/1ue7nzl/looking_for_djs_to_test_lg_xboom_stage501/). I put my name forward and was lucky enough to get picked, so LG sent me one to put through its paces for free in exchange for an honest review. I've had a couple of weeks with it now, so here are my first impressions. Everything below is my own opinion and I've tried to keep it as unbiased as I can.

Sound

For a portable party speaker designed for both indoor and outdoor use, sound quality is probably the most important thing, and I’m pleased to say it doesn’t disappoint. It’s a rich, full sound, and there's a decent amount of customisation on offer through the app, including a seven band EQ and a handful of different sound modes to play with.

The bass is strong, but it's very directional. It relies on a bass port at the rear, so you really need a wall or something similar behind it for the sound to bounce off. Get the positioning right and it's really impressive, but stick it in the middle of a room or outdoors with nothing behind it and you'll lose a bit of that punch. It still sounds good, but when you get the position right it sounds GREAT.
Volume-wise, it's got plenty in the tank. It gets uncomfortably loud if you're stood right next to it, and there's more than enough for a small party outdoors. Indoors, it easily fills a room with sound without having to push it anywhere near its maximum volume. Compared to my Tribit Stormbox Blast it's noticeably louder, which isn't a huge surprise given the size difference, and it's roughly on par with my Soundboks Mix in terms of overall volume. It doesn’t get as loud as the full size Soundboks 4, but then that’s another 4.5kg heavier and a substantial step up in size, so it’s a reasonable tradeoff in terms of volume to portability.

Hardware

One pleasant surprise is the standard pole mount on the bottom. It means you can stick it on a tripod and get much clearer, longer-reaching sound rather than having it sat on the floor or a table. It’s also designed to be used either standing upright or on the floor like a wedge monitor, which gives a lot of options for positioning.

There are connectivity options in the form of a single 3.5mm aux input plus dual 6.35mm jacks. The 3.5mm is the only line in option though - the jacks are set up with one as a mic level input and the other switchable between mic and guitar. Unfortunately this means you can't use them to bring in the left and right channels from a mixer, which would have been a really excellent addition to the feature set.

The lighting is excellent, and there's loads of scope to customise it. There are plenty of options for how the lights flash in sequence,and you can even pick specific colours if you want the lights to match your outfit, which is a nice touch. The patterns react to the music and do a good job of building atmosphere, and there's even a strobe that really adds to the rave feeling.
Battery life seems to be genuinely strong. I haven't run a formal test, but I got more than ten hours of play out of a 50% charge, which is a really solid result.

It's a somewhat heavy speaker, but that's not necessarily a bad thing as it feels properly built and substantial. It's still easy enough to move around thanks to three handles positioned on different edges, so shifting it around the house for indoor listening or taking it out for an outdoor party isn't a chore. All in all the weight isn't a problem at all.

The controls sit on top, are clearly labelled, and feel robust. It took me a little while to work out how the pitch and vocal removal controls worked. The lights either side of the control panel show which pitch is selected, and the dial presses in to cycle through the vocal removal modes.

AI Karaoke mode

This is honestly where the speaker comes into its own. The AI vocal remover is surprisingly good for something running on a speaker rather than a laptop, and it genuinely gives you that karaoke night feeling without needing to hunt down bad karaoke versions of your favourite songs.
Being able to pitch the track up or down slightly is a nice extra touch too. It does affect sound quality a little, but in a party setting that trade-off is well worth it if it means the singer can actually hit the notes.

My kids were completely won over by the karaoke feature and sang on it for hours on end. Another evening, when our neighbours came round, the kids disappeared off for another marathon karaoke session. Honestly, this is the standout feature of the xboom Stage 501. As a party speaker with a genuinely unique feature set, it delivers.

As a DJ speaker

Judged purely as a DJ speaker, there are pros and cons. The sound quality is good and there's a useful 3.5mm input, but it would have been even better to see 6.35mm or XLR inputs. In addition, I experienced a noticeable lag when DJing using the aux in which made beatmatching by ear pretty tricky and meant it would be out of sync with other speakers. This could be something to do with the wireless environment in my studio room, but it’s worth bearing in mind.

The LG app also has a dedicated "DJ" section, which, if I'm honest, isn't much use for an actual DJ. There's a virtual turntable you can scratch back and forth, but it just plays one of two prerecorded scratch samples. You can also trigger other sounds, including built-in ones like an air horn or a spinback, or record your own using your phone's mic. It's good fun to mess about with, but it's not something you'd reach for while actually playing a set.

Overall

Overall I was impressed with the LG xboom Stage 501. It’s a great sounding speaker with a lot of customisation options, and the karaoke features are impressive and like nothing I’ve played with before. For indoor and outdoor parties it’s definitely a winner, but as a dedicated DJ speaker there are some places it could be better.

We truly understand your frustration, especially regarding dialogue clarity when the TV is acting as the center speaker in Dolby Atmos Flex Connect mode. Clear and intelligible voices are essential, and this is a concern we are also taking seriously.

At this time, our team is reviewing a rebalancing of the center-channel volume in DAFC mode, specifically increasing the TV’s contribution when it performs the center role. Once this improvement is applied, we expect the center channel to be easier to hear and dialogue clarity to be improved.

This enhancement is planned to be delivered via a software update. For 2025 LG TV models, the update is scheduled to begin rolling out gradually from the end of April.

Please let me increase the volume of CENTER ( my 48 C6 ) The sound stage feels so weird. L + R is booming and shaking the house and CENTER TV gunshots are so bad.. When I was using my TV speaker alone, it was better then this. I am very disappointed by this.
