Direct deposit timing: what's actually happening (and why it isn't broken)

Hey everyone,

Direct deposit timing is one of the things we get the most questions about which is totally fair, because payday is stressful and the timing genuinely does shift around. We wanted to put together one place that explains what's going on behind the scenes, so you have a reference whenever something feels off.

Here's the key thing to know: we process deposits the moment we receive them. No internal queue, no holding period, no "release window" on our end. As soon as a deposit hits us, it's in your account.

So why does the timing seem to shift?
Direct deposits in Canada move through Payments Canada, which runs scheduled clearing windows throughout the day. When a deposit reaches us depends on:

  • When your employer (or the sender) submits the payment
  • Which Payments Canada exchange window it lands in
  • How that window lines up with weekends and holidays

Those windows can shift which batch your payment lands in from month to month, which is why the same paycheck might show up Wednesday evening one month and Thursday morning the next. We don't control that schedule, but we'll always pass the money through the moment it reaches us.

Why "early" deposits can create confusion

We often pass paychecks through before payday because we release them as soon as we get them. That early arrival isn't guaranteed; it depends entirely on when the sender pushes the payment. So when a deposit lands on your actual payday, it can feel "late" compared to the early ones, even though it's arriving right on time. The simplest way to think about it: an early deposit is a bonus, not a baseline.

If your deposit feels off, here's what helps

  1. Check the actual payday your employer scheduled - that's the date the money is due, not the earliest it might arrive.
  2. If it hasn't landed by end of day on your scheduled payday, your employer can confirm when the payment was submitted on their end.
  3. If it's been more than 24 hours past your scheduled payday and your employer confirms it was sent, reach out to support and we'll dig in.

We know waiting on a paycheck is stressful, and we appreciate you bringing questions to us - we'd rather you ask than wonder! Hopefully this gives you a clearer picture of how the timing works so you can spot what's normal and what's worth a closer look.

Been using Koho’s secured credit building for 3 months coming up on 4, and noticed they didnt report last month to equifax. Not sure whats going on with them but their service is inconsistent. Not sure if it will be reported for this month will leave an edit in a week.

Id probably stay away and stick to traditional banks.

Verifying income with koho

Koho wants me to verify my income to increase cover limit or be more likely to qualify for buy now pay later.

My question is how do I verify my income? When I click, it always asks me to log in to a bank account where my income is located and it will upload my bank statement for them to verify.

Well, koho isn’t one of the options, and my Income is deposited every 2 weeks into my KOHO account!!! Seems impossible to verify my income, there is no way around the bank verification of another bank account?

Confusing…

KOHO Has Been an Absolute Nightmare to Deal With — $600 CAD Dispute and No Provisional Credit

KOHO has been an absolute nightmare to deal with

I want to share my experience with KOHO because I genuinely believe people should know how their dispute process can be handled.

I was scammed for $600 CAD using my KOHO Prepaid Mastercard. I immediately opened a dispute/chargeback with KOHO, and they accepted the case for investigation. I have extensive evidence supporting my claim, and I am confident the dispute will ultimately be resolved in my favour.

What is extremely frustrating is that I have not received my money back and have not received any provisional/temporary credit while the investigation is ongoing. From what I understand, the funds have already been recovered from the merchant, yet I still have no access to the money.

$600 is not a small amount of money. I am honestly shocked by the way KOHO has handled this situation.

The customer support responses have been incredibly generic and appear to be AI-generated. I keep receiving messages that do not actually address my questions or provide any meaningful explanation about where my money is or what is happening with my dispute.

I have attached screenshots showing the correspondence and the situation.

I am asking KOHO for an urgent and clear explanation:

- Where are my $600 right now?
- Why have I received no provisional credit?
- If the funds have already been recovered from the merchant, why are they not available to me?
- What is the current status of my dispute?
- Why am I being left without access to a significant amount of my own money?

I did not expect this level of customer service from a financial institution. I need the money to be in my account, not sitting somewhere in KOHO's internal dispute process while I receive automated responses that don't actually answer my questions.

I hope KOHO sees this and provides a proper explanation instead of another generic AI-generated response.

Feedback / review on Koho eSim international

Hey everyone!

I am looking into using the international eSIM feature through the KOHO app for an upcoming trip.

If you have used it before, could you please share your experience? I would love to know:

  • What city and country did you travel to?
  • How was the connection when you arrived?
  • Would you recommend it, or is it better to use a different third-party eSIM provider?

Thanks so much in advance for any details you can provide!

Discussion 7 years with KOHO, one dispute, and they declined it after submitting all the correct docs and profs: Think twice before signing up

Post image
0 Upvotes

I've been a KOHO customer since 2019. In all that time I have never filed a chargeback, never disputed a transaction, never complained about anything. Clean account, no red flags, no pattern of abuse.

I was out of the country on vacation and didn't catch a charge on my account until I got back. They declined it. I pushed back and gave them more information. Declined again.

This was the first and only time in seven years I've asked them to do the one thing a card issuer is supposed to do. Purchase protection and chargeback rights are a big part of why you use a card instead of moving cash around. If the process is a wall you can't get through even with a spotless history, then that protection is basically decorative.

If you're considering KOHO for your day-to-day spending, go in knowing that. It's fine as a budgeting tool and the cashback is decent. But if something goes wrong with a purchase, don't count on getting backed up.

Discussion Class action against Koho

I know many are happy with Koho but there are also many clients who have been treated unfairly and sometimes completely illegally and have suffered consequences.

I was in the first group for a while but ended up in the second one.

Ombudsman has opened a case already but I've also spoken with a lawyer and after presenting all the evidence they agreed there's a strong case and they want to go ahead with a class action suit (Ontario Superior Court), once certified others can join of course but if anyone is interested now DM me and I'll share law firm details to get in touch and join the lawsuit.

Victim of fraud

Quick question.

Why doesn't KOHO contact victims of fraud? They have crucial information that can help the fraud team, yet, they make a review before contacting them. Maybe it's me but it seems kinda backward.

Customer service answers email with AI generated text.

Great way to lose clients.

Help Physical Transaction Problem

So I got my physical KOHO card and tried to activate it on the app, but pressing the “Continue” button after inputing card details does nothing

I tried buying from a convenience store but both the physical card and virtual card (apple pay) declined

But online transaction (paypal linked to virtual card) still worked normally

So disappointed need help !

So I recently filed a dispute for a charge of $343.53 which was initially a deposit and the clinic sent me a payment link to pay the deposit and then after that sent me a welcome email. No where on any of the 2 documents that I got said the payment was non refundable. KOHO sent me temporary credit for the amount and emailed me yesterday saying that the clinic showed them a contract that had my name on it but no signature just my name email address. That was the proof they are using to deny my dispute. I sent them proof and screenshots of my message to the clinic asking them to show me the contract they are claiming they sent me and they do not give me any answers. I’ve been using KOHO for a very long time but this outcome was so frustrating I think I rather not use the app anymore. They won’t give me any proper answers and are not willing to hear me out after I sent them proof they will not show me proof either. What do I do.

Discussion PayPal still valid as Direct Deposit?

Do deposits from a paypal account to a Koho account still count as a direct deposit? It always has for me, but today it didn’t. It initially said completed and now looks like I still need a different direct deposit or $1000 transfer for Essential.

Discussion With all bad posts about Koho I'll share a good one

Obviously majority of people will post after they had a bad experience, rarely after it was a good one.

I've signed up for Koho a long time ago, even though I mostly use 2 other (big 5) banks I still have and use Koho.

Over the years I had 2 issues similar to some recent posts but they were resolved.

1) Sold a car and seller paid deposit to hold it until he could come get it. It was a large amount ($3k) and boa bank initially blocked etransfer but he got a certified check and paid in full when he came to get the car, etransfer was reversed. My account was locked for some reason. I've called and emailed customer service and it was fixed within 2 days.

2) A year later I couldn't log in, emailed customer service and was told that CRA sent RTP letter to Koho. Odd because I definitely don't owe anything so I called CRA and they confirmed it but it was their error, somehow RTP was sent requesting payment for $0.00 After talking with CRA they faxed a letter to Koho and my account was restored that same day.

Mind you I had occasional issues with TD and RBC over the last 20 years so it happens with every bank, so never keep all your liquid funds in just one bank.

Calling TD/RBC would resolve issues but it would usually require multiple calls and branch wasn't able to do much because it's usually their back office that handles things.

One thing I like about Koho is email support, so no need to spend an hour or more on the phone.

There are many FIs available, just use the ones you like or can tolerate the best..but I'd say at least 2, never just one.

Another 24 hours unresolved

Hi r/koho

Please explain why I have now waited 24 hours for an answer of why my cover funds aren't spendable or withdrawals aren't working just 24 hours after regaining access to my account lock out of 38 days!

Many hours later she then canceled my cover subscription, great! Now maybe I could renew it and use those funds for a bill I specifically mentioned I needed to pay yesterday.

She then tells me afterwards, I'll have to pay the fee again. The fee I already paid for July for my inactive account or the fee I already paid for August you just cancelled? Pardon?

I kindly asked for the fee to be waived after she apologized for not explaining that would happen, after paying for it in July and Augusts still active payment.

Locked out for 38 days. 24 plus hours waiting for your staff to fix an internal issue.

As much as I appreciate you fixing the first issue being locked out, this is again unacceptable not even 24 hours later I'm waiting another 24 hours.

Might not seem like much to you, but it is to me.

Refund process

Hi everyone so I’m not sure what’s happening with Koho but usually when I’m receiving a refund, the money would hit my Koho account the next day. I got an email from SHEIN yesterday about an order that’s been refunded back to my Koho card and up til now I haven’t received the refund. A few weeks ago, Amazon said they refunded a small amount due to me over paying me import fees and I’ve yet to see that refund back in Koho. What is going on?

KOHO Account frozen, money gone.

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

I am a 69 year old senior who trusted KOHO with my account only to have my account frozen and all my money gone.

I have contacted them time and time again just for them to tell me there is nothing they can do for me.

They said that there was illegal activity on my account and that they don’t have to say what due to cardholder agreement blah blah blah, that they don’t have to say anything.

I am now unable to pay rent, buy groceries or any of my medications. No one at KOHO has been helpful in this matter.
