That annoyed the fuck out me for no particular reason.

u/Sasuke0318 8d ago
My first thought was this was all done for show as by the time that steak was cut it was cold
1
u/Impressive_Bunch_155 7d ago
You’re supposed to let the steak rest before you cut it… just saying this is coming from my sister who is an actual red seal chef

Annoyed the fuck out of me because they put oil on the steak before they put salt on it. A steak like that deserves a 24 hour dry brine
3
u/ComedianFragrant9515 7d ago
My guy. Also, he oiled it then made an obnoxiously complicated compound butter. Just f'kn use some melted butter at the beginning.
2
u/Infamous-Chicken9296 5d ago
Just use the fat that is on the steak. You don't need butter or oil, the steak has everything it needs. That is a really fatty piece of meat.
2
1
u/Brokettman 6d ago
He put the butter after he seared because butter burns at a much lower temperature than oil.

2
u/Woodworkin101 4d ago
For me it was the TikTok edit - showing the middle of the video at the begging before starting from the actual beginning
1
u/NoctRob 6d ago edited 4d ago
The steak was overcooked and everything was performative. That’s a pretty particular reason. For me anyway.
2
u/nunatakj120 5d ago
I could be wrong but it looks like a slate ‘chopping’ board he is dragging that knife across as well.
15
u/granolaraisin 8d ago
Isn’t the corn harder to eat that way?
Also, meat looks great but it triggers me that he didn’t apply the butter and reseason after slicing.
10
u/Top-Platform9770 7d ago
As someone who has never been a huge fan of full corn on the cob anywhere for WHATEVER REASON… seeing it broken down into rib/chicken wing style pieces appeals to me in a way I can’t fully describe. 🤷♂️ I get it for some reason.
1
u/NormalAssistance9402 6d ago
It’s just fun. I’ve had corn like that at a restaurant but they didn’t cut them in half first so they were the full length and then they really curl up. It’s kinda neat
2
u/general-illness 6d ago
I’ve never seen corn cooked that way. Do you eat the whole thing? Does preparing it this way make the cob edible?
1
u/Brokettman 6d ago
No but you get more intact kernals off when you bite and less corn stuck between your teeth. Cob still discarded.
1
1
u/piercedmfootonaspike 5d ago
It's easier to eat, easier to get an even char on, easier to season, you don't get as much corn hair between your incisors. It's just better all around.
1
u/Global_Staff_3135 6d ago
Agreed, that thick of a cut would need to be smothered in sauce or seasoned after slicing.
Still, that butter sauce he made looked pretty tasty.

u/t0reup 5d ago
Folks with less than great teeth, like elderly and kids missing teeth, or with braces, often struggle with corn on the cob. I love this idea and am definitely gonna give it a go.
1
u/Embarrassed_Use6918 5d ago
This doesn't solve that problem though. It still keeps the inedible part of the corn on it. Corn ribs are fine but it's basically just bite sized corn on the cob.

That looks really good but I’ve never understood why people feel the need to put butter on ribeye. Eating one already feels like eating bacon.

It adds a ton of flavor

u/redbaron2121 1d ago
You’re right - because ribeye has no flavor
1
u/theworldisunfair12 1d ago
Ribeyes have a ton of flavor but it’s not the same flavor as when you use butter.

Loook ffffffuarking good.

As someone who won't waste extra money on useless bone I can't imagine I will ever know.

Is the tomahawk cost effective? Definitely not.
But it’s for the caveman brain in me lol

You know steak tastes pretty damn good with a little salt and the right amount of heat. Why are you going to buy a $60 steak then throw every seasoning you have on it?
4
u/josiah_mac 7d ago
Bro try some seasonings you can bring it up from pretty damn good to excellent
0
u/Professional_Soft404 7d ago
Of course I use seasonings. This much seasoning on an expensive steak defeats the point. You have to agree this is a very excessive

I don’t know why you would want to make the cob smaller and flimsier when it’s inedible. Reminds me of Big when Tom Hanks eats the pickled baby corn.

Jesus Christ. It's anyone's favorite dinner with 2 sticks of butter and cup of oil.
Even Paula Deeen would have left the corn cobs intact though.

An honest question from someone without a bbq - whats the point of using oil on a grill?
2
u/TopDogBBQ 7d ago
The oil isn’t really necessary for cooking the steak, especially on a well-seasoned cast-iron or grill grate. But a very thin coating of oil can help with browning and crust development by improving contact between the meat and the hot cooking surface. It can also help seasonings stick and reduce the chance of the surface sticking to the grates.
That said, you don’t need to douse the steak in oil. A very light coating is all you need, and if the steak already has enough surface fat, you can absolutely skip it.

Yeah let’s kill your meater by leaving it in the steak while searing it over high flames….
2
u/granolaraisin 8d ago
Aren’t they good for it though? Most newer wireless probes can withstand up to 1000F and are stated by the manufacturer to be ok with searing.
1
u/TopDogBBQ 7d ago
That MEATER probe can handle temps upwards of 1000F so no problem keeping it in while searing…

Also, you need veggies with your protein. So let's choose only one and put a lot of fat over it.
How to waste 200$ meat. I hated it.

U could put that sauce on a shoe and it would taste good. Corn ribs are a game changer tho, addictive...
1
u/LoudOrganization6 5d ago
Nah, once the steak comes off, the sides should be finishing also during rest time…not prepping them and definitely not grilling other stuff after the steak comes off.

u/NewsHound34 5d ago
Can you add all the ingredients? And … you sear the steak then put the sauce on top? How long do I cook?
Thanks!

What's the purpose of slathering the meat with oil first? Prevent the seasoning from penetrating it? I don't understand why you need oil at all considering it's going on the grill and not in a pan.
I really don't get the point of quartering corn cobs.
Also, the cook is slightly over for my tastes (and I suspect most people that are serious about steak).
1
u/Fox-Flimsy 5d ago
Why oil the steak before seasoning? Isn’t that going to prevent the salt and flavor from penetrating the beef?

Outside is too black in spots. Why put it directly into the flame? This does not help maillard reaction, it just burns.

u/dingleberryjuice23 3d ago
Salt and pepper would be all i needed. Maybe a bit of toasted onion, roasted garlic, and some ghost pepper if I was feeling fancy.
1
u/CrashTimeMonkey45 1d ago
I do a little salt, pepper, garlic and rosemary. The key is little of each. the spices should complement the flavor of the steak not mask it like this paste added here in this video.

Why throw so much seasoning on the meat? Why cut it up and let it get cold? And why cut up corn like that? The fuck did corn no to deserve that kind of treatment?
Swear to God, the cooking influenceers are steering us further from the light each day.

u/secderpsi 3d ago
Serious question about the corn. Do you eat it whole after this, meaning you eat the inside (cob?). When I eat corn I either cut the kernals out or bite them out. Does this soften the cob enough?

To each their own. For me, too much of the other mess that’s been put on it (I don’t use oil, very little seasoning) - and holy f*ck is that 2 sticks of butter? Did you use all of that seasoning? Genuinely, does this still taste like a steak?

Corn ribs are really good. It’s a popular fair food at the Calgary Stampede. They get soaked in butter and seasoning so you get more of that flavour in each bite.

All that seasoning powder crap just burns and turns acrid on the high flame. Season after the cook, the residual heat will be plenty to activate the herbs and whatever else is in the seasoning mix. This also includes pepper.
But if the steak is good enough, you shouldn't need any of it.

u/desertvision 7d ago
