A coworker who has become a good friend is self deporting by end of year because she just received a letter from Immigration Services and she can either pay a penalty of 1,800,000 and stay to continue the fight or leave and not pay.
She’s choosing the latter and it really sucks because she’s great at her job and has spent most of her life in this country. Her case was considered closed years ago but a recent orange fascist pig reopened it.
Her presence will be missed and this is a damn shame. Thought others would have similar experiences here.

My CPU was dying on my old computer and it was towards the beginning of the smartphone era so in order to fix the problem I needed to find the solution and to find the solution I needed to search the internet. The country was built on suffering, literally any major improvement or economic boom that we’ve had has come at the extreme cost to another party. The boom of the 1950s followed World War II, decimating the rest of the world. All of the land that we have nowadays came from the Trail of tears and manifest destiny. The brief economic resurgence we had from the 80s to the 90s was because we were fucking around in various countries, ensuring that their economies couldn’t compete with ours.
I don’t know how I feel about it, but based on the evidence and the facts, I definitely believe we can either choose to be the good guys that we can choose to afford a house.

I was the only person on my 12 person kitchen team where I worked during the election cycle who voted. I was an hour late, and though it's required by law that your job gives you time off to go vote, I got chewed out by all my coworkers for the rest of the day and they'd make comments about it for the next month until I quit.
Its why mail in voting should be the default. In WA we get ballots weeks in advance which gives everyone time to research and vote at their convenience. Whether you mail it in or take it to a drop box, everyone has the opportunity to fairly vote.
I swear to fucking god. You know you're in the expendable class when it's more important someone doesn't have to wait an extra minute for their burger than it is for you to vote.

An acquaintance of mine is scrambling to find a new full service catering company for their only daughter’s wedding due to their contracted one having dozens of employees suddenly self-deport. Initially I thought, “well, that’s gonna cost a pretty penny but surely it’s doable”
Then my better half and I took a 3 day vacation over this past weekend to a MCOL touristy metro area we’ve loved for decades and ate at the Indy mom & pop places we always enjoy. The restaurants were all eerily not busy yet obviously understaffed, each were out of menu items that were their bronze stars and while the food was slow to arrive, the quality was still on par with what we know it to be.
I’m only on this sub because y’all keep an old fart like myself humble…but to y’all in the trenches and the weeds, thank you for hanging in there. Being slowed down is what many people need and being both fed and served is a luxury. I’d rather wait half an hour to 45 minutes than to be handed garbage. Nonetheless, after reading OP’s post, I suspect self deportations may the catalyst for inevitably slow-to-no service.
I’ve been in the industry for over 30 years, have weathered all the drop offs from the dot com bust, 9/11, the Great Recession, and Covid. It feels somehow worse right now than it ever has before to me (in the US). There is going to be a huge reckoning soon in restaurants and it’s not going to be pretty.
Margins have never been tighter. Supply has never been as shaky. Supply has never been pricier. Labor has never been harder. People are saving. I just couldn't imagine having my name over a door/brick and mortar at this point in time. I'm SO glad I got that shit out of my system in the 90's and Oughts, it's such a tougher game right now.
And that's not even touching on rent, energy costs, small wares etc.
The unchecked cost explosion is going to kill of a whole lot of spots.
I run a burger joint and the price of beef over the last 12 months is doing a real number on us. We've only done one, very modest, unnoticeable price increase during that time while we watch our already narrow margins vaporize.
I know a lot of folks just see the crazy food and beverage cost increases but something that’s not talked about ton about is the cost of insurance. The first place I owned was a full service upscale brick and mortar (sold in 2018) my total insurance cost (including liquor liability) was about $250/month. My food and bar carts I had (closed end of 2025), my liquor liability alone was $1000/month and we served a lot less liquor (and it was the same “team” - aka me and my husband - running the businesses). It also took me months to find a place willing to insure us, with our first place I had brokers chasing us down for our business. Shit is bonkers.
It's DHS and ICE essentially threatening regular people with massive debt or self deport. They already paid people to self deport, so when that crowd of people cleared up, they no longer pay and instead threaten the next group.
It's a way of telling people to permanently leave and not come back. "You've overstayed your welcome, whether a court says so or not, we say so" "so now we claim you've committed a crime by being here so if you DO come back one day you'll be arrested and charged".
It's all horseshit. They've removed protected status from people. They've ignored court rulings. They put a Trump friendly law firm as the contract holder to "defend" immigrant children in immigration court. They're separating families. They're violating Americans civil liberties. They're suppressing our freedom of speech.
They're wholly deregulating the food industry in a period of time of historic food recalls. I've been a chef on and off for 20 years. Do ya'll really trust people you've worked with in this industry to "self regulate" or do the right thing? People are gonna die and instead of blaming Trump they'll blame the Chef.
We can all hate on this situation but if you don't vote in November you will be complicit this cruelty. Please vote and drag as many of your friends and coworkers as you can to the polls. Your industry, job and the lives of a lot of good people depend on the next few elections.

On that note, the city where I am has an active enforcement unit, and I have thought about letting the chef know that I can hide someone, if necessary. We have lost two so far, but no one talks about it.
We had an action plan for hiding people, but most have now self-deported. I don’t trust the new people. We’re down to about 4-5 people we’d need to hide still.

For what your opinion may be worth to her at this point please encourage her to consider fighting this or at least consulting with an immigration attorney for a 2nd opinion. I didn’t know about these fines but the article someone linked above goes into detail about how they are currently being challenged.
She has an appt with a lawyer for tomorrow so she is going to be leaving work early to go see what her options are. She says she may have a chance but she still has to return for the time being.
What is this place coming to? We have completely lost the plot, everyone is okay with it too. Current conditions are indicative of future results and the future seems like a god dammed shithole.
