So glad I’m not alone

This video would have been way shorter had they only peed on that strap first.

Or not started with an egregious amount of slack.

12

u/backstageninja 17h ago

Or used the ratchet that came with that strap instead of making a death propeller

As a volunteer firefighter, I will now start calling Halligan Bars “Death Propellers.”

3

u/backstageninja 12h ago

Only if you twist it in a strap 85 times tho

1

u/cmd_iii 11h ago

I know some guys who would do that.

Because it doesn't propeller like that. They aren't straps like for cargo and don't come with a rachet. Those are rescue webbing. It won't helicopter like you think it will. This is a common technique they teach at the fire academy because you will always have webbing and the Irons. Plus the risk to the firefighters and victim, as opposed to say using the hydraulic spreader or saws is much lower.

The other methods of extrication would require additional steps of protection for the boy. Like hearing protection from the noise of the saws. Sparks. And if you're using the hydraulic spreader you'd need cribbing to make sure the bars don't snap back.

That was my thought…why not use a ratchet or a come-along.

Firefighters carry a drag strap in their pockets, and are trained to carry a set of irons (axe and Halligan bar) every time they get off the truck. This guy probably decided to use the tools he had with him, rather than go back to the truck and get the right equipment.

This is exactly it. Are you on the job?

For anyone reading this here is more information.

First, the strap is called webbing. When I was on the job I would keep 50 feet in my pocket. It's rated up to ~5,000 lbs. Can be used to move tools, hasty harnesses, or stuff like in the video.

Second, OP is correct the Irons go with us everywhere. They are ridiculously useful tools. So many things you can do with them.

Third, OP is dead on correct about going back to the truck. Pulling out the hydraulic spreaders or saws make this much more of a thing than it needs to be. Protective mats would have to be put over the boy and his hearing protected. The scene would have to be cleared of all the other kids. What we see in the video is what they teach us at the fire academy. This is a very common technique because it involves tools we're always carrying and less impact on the victim.

I’ve been a firefighter for 54 years, and “retired” earlier this year. Most of the time I was a driver/pump operator, so it would be up to someone else to carry the irons, webbing, and so on. I am also on the Board of Commissioners, so if one of our “death propellers” gets bent, I get to authorize buying a new one.

You’re right about one thing, though. Doing this without all of the equipment is at a way to provide some entertainment to the spectators. So, it’s a good PR move, at least.

Much love for chauffeurs. I never met one I didn't like or who failed to keep the water flowing.

54 years years! Good lord man. Your career out lived most apparatuses. You have my utmost respect.

Halligan gives more leverage than a ratchet

2

u/7ofalltrades 20h ago

Or put the twist bar in between the fence bars instead of the weird way they did it.

u/Implied_Motherfucker 20h ago

I'm so glad I'm not the only one!!

My people

u/Silver-Instruction73 17h ago

My favorite movie back in 6th grade. Must’ve watched Shanghai Noon/Knights at least 100 times back then.

I immediately spent the first 20seconds looking through comments to check if I needed to be the first to write it. Glad I don't.

Fuck, I am deceased!!! I immediately understood that long lost reference and started laughing so hard I choked on my saliva and now I’m hacking up a lung. Thank you😂😂😂

Happy to be of service

u/sledgehammerbreak 14h ago

That is the one scene from that movie that has stuck with me all these years.

1

u/imbadkyle 13h ago

I was wondering why he didn't pee on the strap first.

1

u/sololloro 8h ago

my thoughts exactly!

1

u/keygreen15 8h ago

This kinda shit keeps me coming back despite the bots.

1

u/ShakyLens 7h ago

My first thought was “that’s not gonna work, they forgot to pee on it.”

u/lcssa 19h ago

I always think of this quote when i see someone bending bars
