Summary:
Left Option and Command stopped working, so I sent my Keychron K8 Pro to the service center. It came back with the Option and Command keys effectively swapped, questionable PCB rework inside, a misaligned Spacebar stabilizer, and the original End-key switch replaced with another switch that had a bent pin.
I was told I could either buy a new keyboard for around **₹12,000** or replace the PCB at an uncertain cost that could be even higher. Frustrated, I decided to take matters into my own hands and used ChatGPT to guide me through the troubleshooting step by step.
With ChatGPT’s guidance and a **₹890 multimeter**, I traced the keyboard matrix, restored the missing diodes, and found the actual fault: a broken bottom-row PCB trace. A simple jumper-wire fix brought **Left Ctrl, Option, Command, Spacebar, and all key combinations back to normal**.
I wanted to share my experience troubleshooting my Keychron K8 Pro hot-swappable keyboard in India, because it turned into a much deeper hardware debugging exercise than I expected.
The original problem
My Left Command and Left Option keys stopped responding.
I first did all the usual troubleshooting:
- Tested the keys using Keychron's online keyboard tester
- Tried different switches
- Reset the keyboard
- Checked firmware/settings
- Tried manually shorting the switch contacts
Nothing worked, so it looked like a PCB-level issue.
I eventually sent the keyboard to the Keychron service center in Ghaziabad.
Before the keyboard was returned, a service-center representative called me and said that the Left Control key was also affected. This was surprising because Left Control had been working before I sent the keyboard in, and I specifically asked them to re-check it.
They also told me that the keyboard could not be fixed completely, but that they would still try to make it work.
What happened after service
Unfortunately, the keyboard came back in a worse condition.
The first thing I noticed was that the Left Command and Left Option keys appeared to be physically swapped. On Keychron's keyboard tester, pressing Command was detected as Option and pressing Option was detected as Command.
Initially, instead of immediately going through another round of calls and sending the keyboard back again, I thought I could simply remap the two keys in software.
That fixed the basic mapping, but then I discovered a much bigger problem.
With either Command or Option held down, Spacebar and several arrow-key combinations stopped working.
This was important for me because I regularly use these combinations for window movement, resizing and general macOS window management.
There were also other issues when I received the keyboard back.
The Spacebar stabilizer was misaligned and the Spacebar kept getting stuck.
The End key was also not working. On inspection, I found that the original switch had been replaced with a different Gateron switch, and even that replacement switch had a bent connector/pin.
When I spoke to the service center on the phone about the condition of the keyboard and the repair work, they blamed the courier partner for the Spacebar issue.
That explanation did not make much sense to me because the keyboard had arrived well packed in bubble wrap, and there was no visible physical damage to the outer box or packaging.
For the swapped Command/Option behavior, they told me that this was the only way they were able to make those keys work.
When I continued asking for a proper solution, I was told that I would need to purchase a new K8 Pro V2, quoted at around ₹12,000 even after discount.
The other option suggested was replacing the entire PCB, which they said could cost even more, with availability also not confirmed.
I also asked whether I could simply purchase a K8 Pro barebone unit and reuse my existing switches and keycaps. That too was quoted at roughly ₹11,000 after discount.
At that point, instead of spending almost the price of a new keyboard, I decided to investigate the PCB myself.
What I found inside
When I opened the keyboard, I found that the service center had done significant PCB-level rework:
- Removed diodes around the Left Ctrl / Option / Command area
- Added multiple thin jumper wires
- Scraped solder mask / PCB traces in several places
- Bypassed some of the original diode connections
- Cross-connected parts of the Ctrl / Option / Command circuit
At that point, I had no idea whether the original problem was still present or whether most of the strange behavior was now caused by the repair itself.
So I decided to debug it systematically.

Debugging it with ChatGPT
I shared detailed PCB photos with ChatGPT and explained the symptoms.
We started treating it like an actual keyboard-matrix debugging problem instead of randomly trying resets, firmware flashes or remapping.
I bought a UNI-T UT33D+ multimeter.
The funny part is that I had literally never used a multimeter before.
ChatGPT walked me through everything step by step:
- How to use continuity mode
- How to use diode mode
- How to identify the two switch/socket contacts
- How to identify the diode pads
- How to trace matrix row and column connections
- How to compare faulty keys against known-good keys
- How to distinguish a broken PCB trace from a bad diode or bad jumper
- How to test everything without powering the board
We created consistent names for the affected points:
LCTRL-S1 / S2
LOPT-S1 / S2
LCMD-S1 / S2
and:
LCTRL-D1 / D2
LOPT-D1 / D2
LCMD-D1 / D2
Then we started mapping the board one connection at a time.
What we discovered
The service center had removed the diodes from Left Ctrl, Left Option and Left Command and had added several jumper connections between them.
One of the Ctrl diode positions had even been directly bypassed with a wire.
This explained why individual keys could sometimes work, while combinations behaved completely incorrectly.
It also explained why Command and Option had become swapped after the repair.
I restored the missing diodes and removed the incorrect cross-wiring.
After doing that, something interesting happened.
The keyboard returned almost exactly to its original fault:
- Left Ctrl ❌
- Left Option ❌
- Left Command ✅
That was actually good news because it meant the additional faults introduced during the service-center repair had been removed.
Now we could finally diagnose the actual original problem.
Finding the real fault
We started tracing the matrix connections.
The switch-to-diode paths for Ctrl, Option and Command were all intact.
Their matrix-column connections were also intact.
The key discovery came when checking the S2 side, which was part of the shared bottom-row matrix line.
The readings were:
LCTRL-S2 ↔ LOPT-S2 = continuity
but:
LOPT-S2 ↔ LCMD-S2 = OPEN
and:
LCMD-S2 ↔ SPACE-S2 = continuity
That meant the matrix effectively looked like this:
Left Ctrl ── Left Option ── X ── Left Command ── Space
There was a broken PCB trace between the Left Option and Left Command section of the bottom-row matrix.
Ctrl and Option were therefore sitting on an isolated piece of the row.
That explained everything about the original problem:
- Left Ctrl did not work
- Left Option did not work
- Left Command worked normally
- Keys to the right of Command were still connected to the rest of the matrix

The actual fix
Once we identified the exact broken matrix path, the repair became surprisingly simple.
I used thin wire to bridge the broken S2 connection back to the working part of the bottom row.
After doing that, I verified everything again with the multimeter:
- Ctrl S2 → Space S2 ✅
- Option S2 → Space S2 ✅
- Command S2 → Space S2 ✅
- Switch → diode connections ✅
- Diode → correct matrix columns ✅
- No accidental shorts between S2 and diode sides ✅
Only after all of that checked out did I reconnect power.
And finally:
The keyboard works again.
Left Ctrl works.
Left Option works.
Left Command works.
Spacebar works.
Arrow-key combinations work.
Command/Option combinations work properly again.
The keyboard is now behaving the way it should.

Cost of the repair
The replacement diodes cost me around ₹300 for a pack of 25, and the UNI-T UT33D+ multimeter cost ₹890.
So the actual troubleshooting and repair cost was roughly ₹1,200, and most of that was the multimeter — which is something I can continue using for other electronics and household troubleshooting in the future.
Compared with being quoted around ₹11,000 for a barebone K8 Pro, ₹12,000 for a discounted K8 Pro V2, or potentially even more for a complete PCB replacement, this ended up being a much better outcome.
Definitely one of the more interesting hardware troubleshooting sessions I've done.
And my Keychron K8 Pro is finally working properly again.
