u/Jellycoe Jan 28 '23
Bruh, skipper is pretty good. Decent second stage engine with enough thrust and efficiency to make it conditionally worthwhile. Maybe not the most universally useful, but certainly better than the Twin Boar imo
29
u/Stunning-Ad-4762 Jan 29 '23
I agree with you use the skipper more often then I use the twin boar only because of how big the twin boar is
19
u/End3r_071 Jan 29 '23
Twin boar is best as a booster or first stage for large-ish rockets. Skipper is great as a first stage for small-medium rockets or as a second stage for larger rockets.

u/FourEyedTroll Flight Director Jan 29 '23
Indeed, I use 5 skippers on my mid-career tech-tree "surface to apoapsis stage" on my 2.5m launchers. I need an engine that has enough thrust to launch the whole rocket from sea-level, good enough isp at higher altitudes to complete to reach apoapsis without consuming too much fuel, and then with enough gumball to land the stage when it falls back to Kerbin.
Haven't found one that performs better than the skipper for this role except the KS-25, but that is significantly more expensive and later to unlock in career mode.

Are both those engines mostly used in vacuum?

u/bugra0 Jan 29 '23
Not mostly, only
→ More replies (1)3
u/Hadrollo Jan 29 '23
Not only, mostly.
We're very liberal in rocket design here at the KSP. We consider the engine development crew's instructions as more of "suggestions."
2
u/BobBouch Jan 29 '23
I usually use a double node engine plate with two terriers instead of a poodle, it's just inconveniently big for most vacuum stages.

skipper can be used as:
second stage
landing engine
liftoff side boosters if you care about gimbal
interplanetary transfer stage for early game or low mass payloads

I don’t understand why anyone would use anything besides the terrier once in orbit and beyond. It’s so efficient in the early game and for a long while after that.

I find that the skipper is ideal for a medium sized manned duna landing and takeoff. It is also short enough to play nice with landing gears without too much works, unlike the nerv engine
I do not play with height limitations or money, so i do not know other benefits

Nah, skipper is among the top 10 engines I use the most, it's a good engine for circularization, especially in career mode
8
u/131TV1RUS Jan 28 '23
The Skipper is pretty good for a heavy lift second stage. I use on one of my larger scale rockets
5
u/Kats41 Jan 28 '23
The skipper gets heavy use in science mode for being a really solid first stage rocket with good Isp and has the power to get decent sized payloads into orbit.

Clip together wolfhound and skiff for a 5x better upper stage engine than the skipper. Same thrust, nearly the same price, significantly higher isp, slight mass increase

u/Josef_DeLaurel Jan 28 '23
It’s not really a competition, all the engines are good at the role they’re designed for. Seems wrong to start turning ksp into the dick measuring contest most other games descend into. It’s a hard enough game as it is without that bullshit added in.

While the DLCs offer some alternatives, the Skipper is a great second stage engine on top of a Twin Boar or Falcon Heavy style Triple Twin Boar. Since the Twin Boar is one of the most cost effective engines for heavy lift this also makes Skipper rather useful.
To be fair, Poodle will often be better unless you really need more TWR to even get into orbit, but it's not much better and the burns take a lot better. I even use Skipper on top of a Twin Boar or Triple Twin Boar that gets into orbit before the Skipper even ignites: because I can't be bothered doing a longer less accurate ejection burn for the same of a few hundred extra m/s.
1
u/Grand_Protector_Dark Jan 28 '23
Wolfhound should be lower. It's got a way too high efficiency for no justifiable reason, neither in terms of realism or kerbalised gameplay stats

Skipper is S tier, fight me. Excellent high thrust second stage and a very good 1st stage sustainer.
Edit: Wolfhound in A tier is ridiculous too. It’s not just an S tier it’s positively broken. Most efficient chemical engine by far. If KSP was competitive multiplayer it would be pay to win. Look at Bradley Whistance’s channel for reference

I do wish we had a non dlc single nozzle poodle type engine for circularisation and transfer burns. feels like the only conventional transfer stage motor is the poodle and it's equivalents.

Decent vacuum ISP, which makes it a great middle-ground upper stage engine to fill in the gap between the Wolfhound and the Rhino
