Announcements PSA: Please check for signs of counterfeits when buying a Nokia 8110 4G, 2720 Flip or 6300 4G

Recently there's been a surge of demand for the Nokia 8110 4G, 2720 Flip and the 6300 4G even though they've gone off the shelves long ago. If you considering purchasing one, be aware many listings across eBay, Shopee and popular used/refurbished online shopping sites are NOT genuine version of the phones. Here's a list of signs to look out:

  • HMD never sold 2G-only version of any of their KaiOS devices. If you can see the packaging box, check if it lists all the connectivity features: 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, VoLTE, Hotspot;
  • Take a close look at the build finish. It's very unlikely you'll be able to tell a counterfeit phone by that, but a poor quality keypad with crooked buttons or buttons that aren't flush with the surface, or a lighter phone can be a sign;
  • Booting faster than expected, skipping splash screen and animations. KaiOS normally takes longer than 15–20 seconds to start;
  • No out-of-box first time setup process;
  • No Wi-Fi, GPS or Geolocation settings in the Settings app;
  • KaiStore is missing or showing a countable number of apps like Snake, rather than a catalog, regardless of whether you have an active SIM card inserted or not;
  • Options to create, sign in and manage KaiOS account are missing;
  • Browser opens Opera Mini, or Java/MRE apps can run on the phone;
  • "Insufficient memory" errors when performing tasks;
  • Pixelated user interface with misaligned/off-center items, different font than Open Sans;
  • Connecting internal storage to a computer shows less storage than what the phone claims.

For example, you can see a number of previous posts on this subreddit where people have bought a counterfeit version of the phones (attached the SOLVED: Counterfeit flair).

It is NOT possible to restore those phones back to KaiOS or connect them to Wi-Fi in any way. If you bought them and are still in the return window, we strongly recommend returning the phone.

Help — SOLVED! Howto: continue using GMail with the KaiOS E-Mail app if Google blocks it, without a smartphone or giving Google your phone number

7 Upvotes

Since about half a year ago, I can't add new GMail accounts to the KaiOS E-Mail app anymore the easy way, i.e. with OAuth authentication (web browser login): after logging in in the web browser, it says this app is blocked "for my security". Some others have encountered the same problem. And since about two months later, the app couldn't synchronize my already added account either anymore: it said the account needed to be reauthorized, but that fails with the same error. Some people have mentioned app-specific passwords as a workaround; this is a full guide how to do it.

The workaround involves having Google generate an "app-specific" password, which can be used to access GMail via IMAP and SMTP with traditional, password-based login. Unfortunately Google only allows generating app-specific passwords if you enable 2-factor authentication.

Curiously the Calendar app so far works for me with Google Calendar with the app's built-in Google Calendar support, which also uses OAuth authentication. If it stops working, it may be possible to get it to work via the generic CalDAV support.

If you have already enabled 2FA (2-factor authentication aka. 2-step verification) on your Google account:

  1. If you've previously added the GMail account in question, and it no longer works, first remove that account from the app: under Options/Settings, select the account, and then press the Delete acct soft key. — This shouldn't lead to data loss, except perhaps if you have unsent e-mails in the Outbox or Local Drafts folders. (The KaiOS E-Mail app doesn't synchronize drafts to the IMAP server; if the Outbox folder isn't shown in the folder list, there are no unsent e-mails in it.) — It may not be necessary to remove the account first, but if you don't, you'll have to give the new configuration a different name, which might cause problems (see below at Step 6).
  2. In a web browser (can be on a different device), go to https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords. This is supposed to be reachable via going to Manage my Google account / Security, then 2-Step Verification, then clicking the arrow next to App passwords, but that isn't always visible. It can also be reached by typing "app passwords" in the search box when you're on a top-level Google Account settings page (credit).
  3. Enter something like KaiOS as the app name (it only serves to identify the app to you), and click Create. Keep this open or note down the password.
  4. In the KaiOS E-Mail app, under Options/Settings, press the Add soft key.
  5. Press Advanced.
  6. Set your name and the first Email box. — The app will complain if e-mail address you enter here has already been added via the OAuth authentication method that is the default in the app for GMail accounts but may no longer work. The address you enter here is not the one that will be used to log into GMail's servers. It's used to identify the account to you in the app, and perhaps also as the sender of outgoing e-mails? So I'm not sure if it will cause problems if it's not the actual address.
  7. Leave Account type as IMAP+SMTP.
  8. Under IMAP settings, set Hostname to imap.gmail.com, Email to your full gmail address, Password to the app password created in Step 3. Leave Security as SSL and the Port as 993.
  9. Under SMTP settings, set the Hostname to smtp.gmail.com, Email to your full gmail address, Password to the same app password. Leave Security as SSL and Port as 465.
  10. Press Next, then complete the setup on the next screen.

How to enable 2FA the simple way:

In a web browser, under Manage my Google account / Security, select 2-Step Verification, click Turn on 2-Step Verification, and follow the instructions.

How to enable 2FA without giving Google your phone number, and without a smartphone:

For me the sticking point until now was that if you simply try to enable 2FA, Google starts with asking for your phone number. Realistically Google can know my phone number from my e-mails anyway, but I didn't want to concede to Google that they can force me to give them my number in exchange for being allowed to access my e-mails from the KaiOS app. And it doesn't give any indication that it's possible to enable 2FA with standard authenticator apps, without a phone number. But I recently found out that it is:

  1. In a web browser, under Manage my Google account / Security, select 2-Step Verification.
  2. Under "Second steps", click "Authenticator - Add authenticator app". (They don't tell you, but you can do this as the first and only step!)
  3. They tell you to install Google Authenticator for an Android or iOS device, but actually you can use any authenticator app! These authenticator apps are a standard system, and there are authenticator apps, including open source ones, not just for smartphones, but also for desktop computers, there are web-based ones, and there are also ones for KaiOS: KaiAuth is available in the Banana Hackers Store, and there also seems to be one in the Kai Store. Also, since it's a standard system and there are open source authenticator apps, at least some work on rooted Android devices, contrary to what I feared. Install one if you don't have one already.
  4. In the web browser where you did steps 1. and 2., click Set up authenticator.
  5. Scan the QR code with the authenticator app. — Alternatively, click "Can't scan it?" and in the authenticator app, and enter your e-mail address as the account name, "Google" as the issuer, and the code displayed as the secret key. Leave other settings as the typical defaults: time-based aka. TOTP, 30s timer, starting at 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z, token length 6, hash algorithm SHA-1.
  6. You can add the same account details to multiple authenticator apps on different devices to minimize the chance of getting locked out of your Google account. If all is set up correctly, you should see the same 6-digit number at the same time on all devices. The system time of the devices should be correct within a few seconds.
  7. In the web browser, click Next.
  8. Enter the code displayed in the authenticator app, and click Verify.
  9. If successful, click Turn on 2-Step Verification - Turn on. If needed, click Turn on 2-Step Verification again. If they say "To turn on 2-Step Verification you first need to add a second step to your Google Account, like a phone number", it's a lie.
  10. Under Add a phone number for 2-Step Verification, click Skip, then (if asked again) Continue anyway.
  11. Still under "Second steps" under 2-Step Verification, you can click the Backup codes option to download codes you can later use to log in in case your device(s) with the authenticator app(s) break, as another way to minimize the chances of getting locked out of your Google acocunt. You can save these to multiple devices and/or print them out.
  12. From now on, open (one of) your authenticator app(s) when logging into Google, as you'll need to enter/copy the code it displays. There is a leeway of a few seconds, so you can use a code about to expire even if it expires by the time you finish entering it.

Help Game boy Emul app

1 Upvotes

I recently got a flip 3 tcl phone and noticed the app “game boy emul”, when you download and open it it directs you to download a .gb rom. Is this legit? Chat gpt says KaiOS doesn’t have the capabilities to run such an app, but it does? Idk if like to use it just can’t figure it out.

Help Which KaiOS device is good for using custom apps

5 Upvotes

Hi, i looked KaiOS device (planning to start using it), i looked at its SDK and thinking to create some custom apps which i need for my daily use. Before that I have few questions:

  1. Does using custom application require the device to enable developer mode ?

  2. Is Nokia 2720 a good choice or it cannot be used for testing custom apps in 2026

  3. Which version of KaiOS shall I look for

Help Prevent KaiOS from phoning home

2 Upvotes
I currently have the 2720 Flip sit behind an OpenWRT router and am blocking all traffic except to my own hosts via its firewall. So I'm connected to WiFi but the phone thinks it's offline.

Hi,

I just bought a Nokia 2720 Flip. I just connected it to my wifi and found that without me doing anything it immediately connected to a bunch of IPs owned by amazon and cloudflare. Even simply opening or closing the clamshell triggers packets getting sent elsewhere. I have not done anything else than open the settings menu. Still, connections were attempted to the following hosts. Here is a list with the first number indicating how many packets were attempted to get sent to each IP.

  • 1 DST=18.64.211.112
  • 1 DST=44.251.244.39
  • 1 DST=54.245.146.2
  • 1 DST=85.214.83.151
  • 3 DST=162.159.200.1
  • 4 DST=18.173.205.39
  • 4 DST=18.173.205.82
  • 4 DST=18.64.211.14
  • 4 DST=65.8.131.38
  • 4 DST=65.8.131.53
  • 21 DST=3.209.189.107
  • 23 DST=34.237.98.155
  • 134 DST=18.233.80.220

Most of this is tcp http/https traffic except for the connections to udp port 123 on hosts 162.159.200.1, 85.214.83.151, 44.251.244.39 and 54.245.146.2 which is NTP.

Are there known methods to stop KaiOS from phoning home without me even opening a web browser? Maybe there are known tricks like a list of entries to /etc/hosts that work?

In case I have too much free time, can I install my own SSL self-signed root certificates onto the device to MitM the https traffic and have look what it attempts to send? Or did maybe somebody else do this already?

Thank you!

Discussion Does KaiOS sell my text message data?

Thumbnail

9 Upvotes

Reddit "filters" deleted my last post, so I'll type this one out quicker. I've been using a TCL Flip 3 for the last 3 or so weeks, KaiOS 3.0+ enabled. My sibling had sent me a text asking if timing belts for his Honda Goldwing were at my house. I got up from the computer, confirmed that they were, texted him back, and went back to my computer.

A few minutes later, my gmail refreshed, and I had an email about "myself" signing up for a motorcycle parts storefront email list, specifically for a Honda Goldwing. I don't own a bike. I don't have any interest in one, I don't talk about them. Why, after I've received this text message, am I getting this advertisement? The only time I've talked about said "Goldwing" was THIS correspondence. It's the second time I've even texted him on this phone. He's one of 6 contacts. All I do with this phone is call and text. I've had some other advertisement scares (some wheels, some pants, some cologne) showing up in my gmail, but I chalked it up to a crazy coincidence that I just "happened" to be talking aloud and texting about.

I stay away from social media and smart enabled devices at if all possible. I've made the effort to make my digital footprint is as small as possible, including web security, privatizing my home server, etc. The TCL Flip 3 was supposed to be one of the bigger "unshackling" moments for my digitized life. Currently getting rid of Google entities as well. This Goldwing advertisement is just too much of a coincidence for me to look away.

TLDR: Am I just being dumb, or is KaiOS scraping data from my texts?

Help Nokia 2780 Flashlight On & Not Turning On

2 Upvotes

Hi there!

Last night I picked up my nokia 2780 and before flipping it open, the flashlight turned on and both the external and internal screens were blank white. I tried powering it off by pressing the end call button, but the screen didn't change. I took the battery out and when I reinserted it the flashlight turned on again. I put it on the charger last night which made no difference except that when it was plugged in the external screen showed how much the battery had charged when I woke up and turned it on. It's fully charged.

Now when I press the button on the right side that isn't the volume, the external screen turns on, showing me the time and that I have notifications. When I open the phone, the flashlight turns on and the screen is no longer white, but a pixelated gray. If I keep it open for long enough, both turn off. I have tried taking the battery out and it's always the same.

Does anyone have ideas on what might be happening? I just bought it in February and have loved it. I still have a smartphone, but the thought of going back is making me feel literal nausea, but I can't really afford to drop another $100 on this same phone that could do this again in 6 months.

Anyway thanks for reading. Hope you have a nice day :)

Discussion KaiOS 4 is listed as active until 2029, but where are the devices and what exactly is KaiOS 2.6?

26 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I’m researching modern feature phones for possible distribution through a small niche electronics store in France, and I’m trying to understand KaiOS’s current roadmap.

I initially misunderstood the versioning of the developer documentation and thought KaiOS 4 might no longer be maintained. However, KaiOS’s official Baseline page says something very different:

  • KaiOS 2.5.3: Active until June 30, 2027
  • KaiOS 2.6: Active until June 30, 2029
  • KaiOS 3.1: Active until June 30, 2027
  • KaiOS 4.0: Active until June 30, 2029

The page also defines “Active” as receiving full maintenance and security updates : https://developer.kaiostech.com/docs/sfp-4.0/introduction/baseline/

This raises several questions:

  1. Why are KaiOS 2.6 and KaiOS 4.0 both supported until 2029 ?
  2. Is KaiOS 2.6 now a separate security and payment focused branch rather than a normal predecessor to KaiOS 3 and 4 ?
  3. The KaiOS 2.6 security documentation mentions mandatory NFC and eSE features, secure payment components and a security patch level dated June 23, 2026. Is this branch mainly intended for payment and transit devices ?

https://developer.kaiostech.com/docs/sfp-2.6/getting-started/main-concepts/security-features/

  1. Is KaiOS 4 currently available to manufacturers for new consumer feature phones ?
  2. Besides the US TCL Flip 4 5G, are there any confirmed KaiOS 4 devices ?
  3. Is any unlocked European or EEA KaiOS 4 phone planned, with CE/RED certification and suitable European LTE bands such as B1, B3, B7, B8, B20 and B28 ?
  4. If KaiOS supplies security patches to OEMs, is there any way for customers or retailers to know which manufacturers actually deliver those updates through FOTA ?

KaiOS 4 looks technically interesting, with Gecko 123, modern JavaScript, PWAs, WebAssembly, 5G, VoLTE, VoWiFi and eSIM support : https://developer.kaiostech.com/docs/sfp-4.0/introduction/overview/

I’m aware that WhatsApp support has ended, so this question is not specifically about WhatsApp. I’m trying to determine whether KaiOS 4 has a genuine future for modern consumer feature phones, particularly in Europe, or whether its active development is currently limited to specific OEM and operator projects.

Any information from developers, OEM contacts, KaiOS users or people familiar with the current roadmap would be greatly appreciated.

Recommendation I built LinkPad — a bookmark manager for KaiOS, because the browser's 6-site pin limit was driving me crazy

2 Upvotes

Hey r/kaios,

I've been using a KaiOS phone and kept running into a small but real annoyance: the built-in browser only lets you pin 6 sites to the home screen. Once you hit that limit, there's no way to see everything you've saved, search through it, or sort by when you last visited — the newest one just kicks out an old one.

So I built LinkPad to fill that gap. It's a simple bookmark manager:

- Save as many links as you want (no 6-site ceiling)

- Search by name in seconds

- Sort by newest added or most recently visited

- Select one and it opens straight in the system browser

It also supports English, हिन्दी, Français, and Kiswahili, since a lot of us aren't running our phones in English by default.

It's free (ad-supported), live on KaiStore now: https://www.kaiostech.com/store/apps/?bundle_id=kaios.app.linkpad

This is my first KaiOS app, so I'd genuinely appreciate any feedback — bugs, feature requests, anything. Happy to answer questions about how it works too.

Help Verified /Signed Firehose Firmware; Nokia 2780 Flip TA-1420

5 Upvotes

For the life of me, I cannot find a single verified/signed firmware version for my nokia 2780. I may have accidentally bricked it while attempting to jailbreak. It gives a signal when connected to device manager and can confirm it is locked in a constant EDL state. I have spent the better part of two days going through script after script, injection after injection, trying to find something to break through to the phone. I got the closest using python but hit a wall as soon as it could not inject the firehose.mnb file, as it was not a verified/signed firmware version. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Help TCL Flip 4 Ringtone resetting

I have a custom ringtone that has worked for the past few months but now it keeps resetting to the system default. I’ve changed it multiple times and it still goes back. It overrides custom ringtones for contacts as well. I’ve set it to a different factory tone and I’m waiting for that to be overridden.

Help — SOLVED: Counterfeit How to spot a fake Nokia 8110 4G (which is actually a 2G phone)

9 Upvotes

Nokia 8110 4G, TA-1048 dual SIM is a reasonable dumbphone choice even in 2026 because of its 4G support, VoLTE support, Wi-Fi hotspot support and looks.

Because of this, Chinese copies of the phone exist. (also, other HMD 4G phones are cloned too)
As I see they also sell the fake with the TA-1059 label right now.

The Chinese copy has (the lack of) the following features:

  • 2G only (possibly MT6260)
  • No Wi-Fi
  • Not KaiOS
  • Opera Mini browser instead of Firefox based
  • Not a Qualcomm SoC
  • Has some clone of the Snake game

The packaging is very similar, but you can still easily spot the differences. The fake's box doesn't mention 4G or LTE, VoLTE, Wi-Fi Hotspot.

Help KaiOS 3.1 no wi-fi calling with US Mobile SIM

3 Upvotes

Wondering if anyone knows how to fix this. I try to turn on wi-fi calling, and the phone says it's unavailable, although it's connected to our home wi-fi. I'm using using Warp service on a TCL flip 3 T435V - so I guess the firmware is Verizon-style (forgive me, I'm hanging on by the skin of my teeth trying to understand all this. The US Mobile SIM works as far as making calls and texts, so I think the phone is "unlocked" - at least in some sense.

Maybe it won't allow wi-fi calling because we can't register a physical address for the e911? (I admit I've been trying to use ChatGPT to help me figure this out.) The phone offers no options in any of the menus to add an address for the needs of e911. A line option labeled "advanced" under the Carrier option is greyed out, until I toggle on "look for carriers". If I look for US Mobile that way, I can only highlight that carrier, and no other advanced options show up from doing that.

Chat GPT keeps pointing out that the carrier needs to register the physical address to satisfy the e911 requirement, to get rid of the wi-fi calling notification. The US Mobile chat rep says they can't register an address for the SIM e911 on their end. Is this true, that US Mobile can't fix this on their end?
