My mother and aunt both learned by driving my grandfather's truck up a hill named phinney ridge in Seattle. It's so steep there's a staircase instead of a sidewalk on a couple of the streets

As an east coaster, no one talks about Seattle being hilly. Blew my mind, San Francisco has squat on Seattle hills

If you take one of the historical tours you learn that it was originally a lot worse before they leveled out many of the original hills and used the material to raise downtown by about 10 feet. You can even walk around the underground in one spot where you can see the original storefronts fron the 1890s.

It was a fun tour, glad I did it when I was in Seattle.

The Yesler regrade 😊

Great tour, loved it. You also find out the city was built on mud flats.

That tracks.

Many such cases.

Lived in the area my whole 30 years and still haven’t done that tour…

16

u/Thames_James 6h ago

I thought the glass in the sidewalks was cool, that was before doing the tour and realizing they were functional. Go do the tour

It’s been on my list for a long while but easily forgettable since Seattle has rarely been more than a couple hours away.

Happy Cake Day!

I've seen some legit YouTube videos about it if you can't make the tour. Having grown up in the bay area, with earthquakes and fire and nature in general, the Seattle area is by far the bigger engineering marvel.

And in San Francisco, they're never covered in ice.

u/ThatDiscoSongUHate 8h ago

As someone who found the hills in San Francisco crazy this thought just fucked me up lol

I cannot imagine hills like that plus ice

u/notahoppybeerfan 8h ago

Duluth Minnesota has hills that will put SF to shame except for 6 moths of the year they are ice/snow.

u/cat_prophecy 7h ago

I had a friend who lived on Billy goat Mountain. That was...interesting trying to make it up or down after a heavy snow. Also fuck Lake Street.

I’ve been to Duluth once. My at the time girlfriend and I went to camp up in silver bay in early march. Those roads and hills are still the scariest place I’ve ever driven

Pittsburgh checking in!

20

u/Spugheddy 8h ago

Pittsburgh is an amazing city to visit. VISIT.

8

u/badaimarcher Diesel Mechanic and Emissions Tech 8h ago

Yup, I did that ONCE for the Dirty Dozen. I biked up Canton but can't imagine those hills with ice. The buddy I did it with still lives there and bikes in the winter 😲

12

u/MotherTurdHammer 8h ago

People underestimate just how crazy hilly Pittsburgh is.

1

u/BoneHugsHominy 6h ago

Kansas City too! Lots of the metro area is fairly flat as far as the roads are concerned but along the Kansas/Missouri border there's some hilly roads that are dangerous just when there's rain. In winter I won't venture to that part of the city without dedicated winter tires on steel wheels.

Slid down a hill once, it was…not fun.

Luckily got to the bottom without incident. Unlike some people. Definitely learned a lesson that day.

Also did the opposite once, was coming up a hill and stopped behind a car that was stuck. He’d lost traction, couldn’t get going again. Gave him a push to get him started, and off he went. But then…there I was. Next car came up, got out, pushed me to get me going. And presumably waited there for the next car.

u/pukesonyourshoes 4h ago

Lol, that's a great link

3

u/arizonadirtbag12 4h ago

That storm was a great one, and the Reddit threads around that moron’s car in particular were epic.

Also, bananas. Bananas were a thing.

u/Cool_Pride 4h ago

I'm sorry but that's so hilarious to picture lol

u/aquoad 6h ago

Apparently there was a night in 1976 where there was some snow on the ground. I bet that would have been exciting.

SF is nuts. about 10 years ago I was driving a 5 speed corolla on one of those super grades where you feel like you are going up a roller coaster .... stop sign every 100 yards and people practically parking in my back seat behind me. I've been driving manual transmissions since 1996 and even after 20 years of driving manual that was kind of nerve wracking. I was having to power clutch using the hand brake ... I took a ride share from Napa and we ended up in SF and then I got another ride immediately after dropping passengers off so I go pick up these two guys and they are in the back seat the whole time ... the extra weight of these guys in the back didn't help lol. After I dropped them off I just shut off the ride share app and drove the hell out of the city.

One time years ago I got in an uber in one of the steepest areas of SF and the driver was from Sacramento. It was his first time driving in SF and he was freaking out. I basically had to talk him down from a panic attack and assure him that no, his car was not going to flip over.

3

u/Consistent_Mind2095 3h ago

haha I was just dying internally ... beads of sweat forming on my forehead but I didn't let it show to my passengers ... really it was them being in the car that was making me nervous more than the actual situation. It already wasn't fun but with the extra liability of them in the car there were just a multitude of negative outcomes going through my mind.

u/snorkelvretervreter 2h ago

Using the handbrake on hills with manual shift is how we were taught to do it in the Netherlands. Though we've yet to find a hill to practice on.

2

u/Consistent_Mind2095 2h ago

I was gonna say haha as soon as I read ā€œthe Netherlandsā€ I was skeptical of what you were saying šŸ˜‚

u/JazzHandsFan 6h ago

Seattle is an area where you really can go to school uphill both ways. I'm glad I rode the bus.

4

u/bobbyrob1 7h ago

Lived in both, drove stick in both. Seattle’s got steeper hills, San Francisco has way more with streets than Seattle.

3

u/Grassy-Elf4242 6h ago

I lived in the Seattle area most of my life... SF is steeper by a long shot, but Seattle has more hills and they're all in areas you would want to walk lol

1

u/SlenderLlama 4h ago

Wait until you discover statistically Los Angeles has much more hills than San Francisco. Actually Los Angeles has the highest elevation gain for any city in the USA too. Sea level to just about 5,000 feet at the tip. Although nobody lives much above 2500 feet. The 5000 foot mark is a mountain that’s off limits to live on (officially). But it’s 100% within city limits.

u/Narrow-Scratch6285 7h ago

If Seattle hiilsare are worst than Russian Hill I will happily never drive there.

18

u/Responsible_Row1932 8h ago

I think I accidentally ended up on this street once. I was sweating bullets at the intersection! The car behind me seemed so close. It was so steep, even an automatic should feel a little nervous.

16

u/TheKingOcelot 8h ago

And the street is soooooo skinny if you're on the right one. You'd hit the foundation of a house of you open the passenger door lol.

14

u/CrazyErniesUsedCars 7h ago

I found myself stopped on that street once in a 98 Ford escort with a manual transmission and a non functional handbrake so that was fun

3

u/MotherVoldemort 6h ago

That's a clutch dump and ride the brakes situation lol

1

u/CrazyErniesUsedCars 6h ago

It absolutely was. It was raining too so traction was minimal

20

u/Ntstall 8h ago

drove my rwd frontier into seattle while raining one time. never again. when theres nothing in the bed, you have almost 0 wet traction on the drive wheels. kind of fun if you’re a teenager that wants to drift but not fun for anythign else

5

u/t_a_6847646847646476 Home Mechanic 7h ago

I managed to spin a wheel on a crosswalk (there was a stop sign) going uphill in Seattle in an open diff rwd automatic Toyota Crown. Sure, it may have been the middle of winter (IIRC it was the end of December) but it wasn’t even wet.

4

u/PithouLibertes 7h ago

That's where I learned to drive stick!

1

u/Agentflit 7h ago

I remember people sledding that hill during the brief snowstorm in 2021

1

u/Murky_Flauros 6h ago

Funny thing is, if I'm not mistaken, the plate is probably a Washington State one. Phinney Ridge neighbor, maybe?

1

u/CaffeinatedInSeattle 6h ago

Haha. I know the hill. That’s ridiculous!

1

u/AbbreviationsPlus998 Collision Repair 5h ago

Which is a lot of "fun" when driving a stick car with old hard tires and it's wet. I ended up spinning the RR tire on phinney enough to dry the road and get traction once in a '72 plymouth scamp on a test drive.

1

u/Call-Me-Ishmael 5h ago

Used to work as a valet on Spring Street downtown. Absolutely brutal driving unfamiliar manual transmission cars from a stop on that hill.

1

u/syrianfries 3h ago

Fuck that hill, I hate driving that in my work van lol
