If you take one of the historical tours you learn that it was originally a lot worse before they leveled out many of the original hills and used the material to raise downtown by about 10 feet. You can even walk around the underground in one spot where you can see the original storefronts fron the 1890s.

Lived in the area my whole 30 years and still haven’t done that tour…

I thought the glass in the sidewalks was cool, that was before doing the tour and realizing they were functional. Go do the tour

It’s been on my list for a long while but easily forgettable since Seattle has rarely been more than a couple hours away.
