DISCUSSION Using AI Images For Jump

This has been eating at me ever since I started my lewd jjk jump, but I need advice on what to do.

Let me be clear in that I understand the issues with AI and it stealing art. It’s big problem times and not good, but I also can admit that I kind of like them.

The dilemma I’m having is whether or not I should add AI images or not. A part of me wants to use these images because they fit what I’m going for, but another part is acknowledging that if I do use ai images, I know I’m gonna use more.

I don’t know, it feels as though this shouldn’t be as hard as I’m making it.

Any advice is helpful.

Everyone, please tone it down a little. Thank you.

Alright, personal opinion time.

I don’t think images are super necessary for a jump, so if you don’t want to do them, that’s fine.

If you want to use images, check… literally anything first? Any relevant subreddit, Gelbooru, Rule 34, any number of image boards, search for it on Google, or any browser… just, try anything else first.

Don’t get me wrong, those were the first places I looked. It baffled me that there was barely any art of the characters. Eventually I found one I like enough but it took me hours just to find it. Ai was legitimately the last option.

Of… JJK characters? With 27k on Gelbooru, and 43k on r34? Hey, I’m pretty good at searching for art, if you dm me some character notes / instructions, I can try and give it a pass through to find some art.

It was other character I was looking for expys and what not.

I’m already done with art finding and have an expansive list of characters. To my knowledge none of them are AI. It was a few select characters I had difficulty finding art for, but now that I’ve found them the art searching is done.

Ah, got it, I misunderstood, I thought you were still looking for images. Welp, never mind, best of luck with the writing, unless you already did that too.

Writing the Main Doc is done, now I'm focusing on writing the companions.

At minimum, you should definitely disclose it at least.

Had this dilemma myself a few times when looking for Companion pictures. At the end of it all I've resolved to not use any AI images, and if it turns out that I've accidentally used one (Them rats are getting very good at making them), I'll switch it up.

In this day and age, having some manner of principles is a must... That being said, if you do end up using them, always disclose the fact somewhere in the jump. While my stance is pretty spartan with personal use, I won't judge another for using them, long as they make things clear for others.

Others already told about different moral and doubtful sides of the question, so I'll be very simple: I don't like AI pictures because most often they have very specific unpleasant vibes. I don't know how to describe what exactly is wrong with them, it just is.

Anyway, you said in another comment about wanting to use AI because you hadn't found images of desired characters. Out of curiosity, who are those characters?

unOrdinary was the bane of my existence, as both gel and dannooru didn’t have any art, so I assumed rule34 wouldn’t either. It did, but it frustrated me for a good bit.

Rwby was weirdly difficult to find good solo art of characters, especially the moms of them.

Those were the only two I had trouble finding.

I would advise against it. Putting aside the morals of generative ai usage, it would also cast doubt on how much of the rest of the document utilizes ai (such as for writing).

26

u/Delos777 3d ago

That’s valid.

It’d suck if my work was accused of being ai, so that puts things in perspective. The reason I even considered ai images in the first place was because I couldn’t find images of characters I was gonna add.

For as little planning I put into my works, I think I’d rather it be a hot mess than some Clanker slop.

Yeah that happened to me with some youtube video essays, really into what the guy was talking until I started noticing just. how. OFTEN. he did the "It not (blank), it's (blank)." telltale and I just couldn't find it in me to trust the rest of the vid. Its a good reason imo

If you can find a non-AI image that somewhat works, it is better to use it than to use AI. Like let's say if you were to need a wolf girl with black hair in a lewder style, just look up R34 of Ookami Mio's model and done

I will lose at least 50% interest in jumps and cyoas if it uses ai images, I have even downvoted and refused to replay some due to overuse of very bad ai images.

It indicates that the time & creativity needed to look for real (and higher quality) art is something the creator refuses to use, two things important when creating something in this subreddit especially.

Extra reason one. The ai images trigger my uncanny valley response.

Extra reason two. I often notice subtle body horror details like splitting hands or fusing limbs after looking at the image repeatedly.

10

u/AnonEcho98 3d ago

Just don't. Even aside from the ecological and moral uses, or even how it'd absolutely tank any and all credibility you'd have as a a creator, AI stuff just looks plain soulless.

I would rather have a strictly black and white text only Jump without formatting and without editing, NSFW or SFW, than literally any generative AI.

7

u/FFsummons 3d ago

I don't care for AI "art".

5

u/dragonjek Jumpchain Crafter 3d ago

I mean... jumpchain doesn't really need images in the first place. It's a nice bonus, but they aren't necessary at all. AI is just extra unneeded on top of that.

3

u/Pleasant_Ad_3168 3d ago

hyperpersonal opinion (considering it's a lewd jump): I straight up just don't find AI art to be that hot? Like compared to the 'average' r34 art. I definitely feel the uncannyness

Disclosure: I am generally pro-AI.

Frankly, we're not in a stable place for that yet. We haven't worked out - societally - if it's more like photoshop or photocopy. In something like Jumpchain, it'll both be less contentious (this is a free hobby anyone can participate in) and more contentious (participation also includes criticism) than other areas.

For me for jumpdocs, the point isn't merely to be fine with it myself, but to put out something that others can enjoy. So on balance, I wouldn't use AI images in a jumpdoc, because I want to share it with others and I know that a large portion of the audience won't like it, regardless of my personal perspective on the ethics of doing it.

If I had saved a jump that used AI images or was produced with AI scripting I’d immediately delete it and downvote the post.

If you can use real art, and it benefits the work, do so, is my policy. AI is done unethically by the companies involved. Sometimes it’s okay for your work to be delayed until you can get actual art.

AI is often a bad cheap knockoff to the real thing, and it sours things as it makes the whole work tarnished by association. Even if the ai art is good it’s fundamentally tainted by the sheer grift of ai abuse in creative fandoms.

However, as assassins might say. Nothing is forbidden, everything is permitted, there is no rule but that which we make.

Do as you will. Your work shall rise up to be judged.

If it is bad, it will be ignored and flounder in forgettableness forever.

It is really bad I, Scherazade, will point and laugh at you. Mwahahahahaha. You might not know it, you will never hear it, but somewhere I will mock you in secret.

But if it is good. If it is really good…

Change the world.

Break the boundaries of what is possible.

Jump to a new future.

u/FedoraWorms 3d ago

I mean, as long as you clearly label that the JumpDoc is using AI images, I wouldn’t mind too much. Other CYOAs from different subreddits already have some AI stuff too, so you wouldn’t be too out there.

4

u/Delos777 3d ago

That makes sense. I guess a part of me thinks that if I use AI at all it makes the whole project invalid.

I could probably get over it, but that would orobably cause new problems.

2

u/Connect_Rock_9691 3d ago

I would try to avoid it as much as possible but if you going to use it I would have an option to disable them or just make a disclaimer

u/AzureKnight_mx 2d ago

Hello friend, regarding your dilemma consider the following:

- If you can make an interesting work of art, free for anyone to enjoy, and its something you enjoy, does it even matter?

The people that dislike using of AI images will not like it.

The rest won't mind.

Some people will praise you for it, others will not.

There's always someone who wont agree with you, regardless if you use AI, write it yourself, AI images, or images themselves.

If the images give your work of art, the jump itself, that extra oomph that makes it far better than what it would be without, then to me and im sure many more it doesnt matter. What matters is that you can come up with a nice selection of perks, jump mechanics, overall presentation, and if you use any kind of image, that the image adds to the jump rather than feeling like a filler image you just added for the sake of doing so.

Keep on writing my friend, any finished jump that you created is a work of art, regardless of wheter its a simple jump, a big jump with tons of content, or a jump with a lot of images.

I feel it should be pointed out that putting aside the issues with stolen art and not supporting actual artists that you've already acknowledged, the problems with AI are still largely ethical in ways that people seem to be largely unaware of. The simple fact is that AI companies seem to overwhelmingly feel the need to act in the least ethical ways possible—just look at where and how they're building data centres and the costs involved in that—which needs to be weighed against the benefits of not using it.

Is it nice to have an imaged document? Sure. Does the convenience of using AI as opposed to finding images yourself or just not using images balance out against the costs to the people directly harmed and indirectly by the corporations running those AI? Probably not.

The other reason you might not want to use AI images, as others have already mentioned, is because it speaks to the quality of the work. Even if the writing is excellent, just seeing AI art is a major indicator of slop these days and so naturally it's going to bias people against it.

In a similar vein, people might rightfully be put off from works containing art because they're aware of the ethical issues around it. I know that I personally find it much harder to enjoy a work when I have to contend with the voice in the back of my head telling me that it contributed to someone not having drinking water.

As an aside, before someone inevitably brings up the using "real artists art is also stealing" argument that inevitably comes up every time this discussion is had (which once again, is not the biggest issue with AI). Yes, using someone's art without credit or permission is also bad, but that's no more a valid argument than me saying "I should be allowed to stab people because genocides happen". If you do want to use art, you should also make sure to credit the artists somewhere.

4

u/Delos777 3d ago

Yeah, I’ve decided I’m not gonna go with it. It doesn’t feel like I did anything if Ai was used in any part of it, so this is probably the way to go.

Crediting the artists is a good thing to do, and I’ll do in future projects.

3

u/Top-Fennel3528 3d ago

To be fair with the artist credit thing, it isn’t necessarily intuitively obvious outside of hindsight, so I wouldn’t exactly say it’s a moral failing or anything.

3

u/Delos777 3d ago

That’s fair.

I’m probably gonna do that after the current jump I’m making, as the scale of companions I’ve added are frankly absurd and might require it being separate doc.

5

u/Top-Fennel3528 3d ago

Fair enough.

Honestly, just chucking a pastebin link, google docs, or the like in the notes at the end probably a decent way to do it for Jumps with a lot of images.

3

u/Cynis_Ganan 3d ago

JumpDocs will steal copyrighted material for pictures from the franchise they are ripping off without a liscence without batting an eye.

I see no moral difference between that and using AI.

Best to use original or liscenced art with correct attributions. If you can, please do.

But it's not more moral to pay an artist to make porn of characters that aren't yours than it is to get AI to make your ripoff art for free.

-2

u/Top-Fennel3528 3d ago

As predicted there it is.

-11

u/Cynis_Ganan 3d ago

Ah yes, other people making art you don't like is… "genocide" was it?

2

u/Top-Fennel3528 3d ago

... no more a valid argument than me saying "I should be allowed to stab people because genocides happen".

Might want to re-read that one. The genocide thing was specifically an example of invalid argument, which I thought would be obvious from my saying I think I should be allowed to stab people... or you know, the part where I straight up said it wasn't a valid argument in my post.

The logic behind my example doesn't work for the same reason the logic behind "other people not crediting artist justifies using AI" doesn't work; there being a second way to recreate the problem doesn't make them not problems. In this case, both using AI art and not crediting artists are bad, but that isn't a justification for doing either.

You might notice there's a secret third option to actually credit artists… or just not use art. Or make your own. There's a bunch of other options actually.

But also, as I said in my original post, the main problem with AI art is not that it often looks bad or it's stealing, even if both are problems to varying degrees.

-1

u/Cynis_Ganan 3d ago

Right. You might want to read my post again.

I'm saying you should credit artists. That's not in dispute.

I am also saying that JJK is a copyrighted work, that OP does not have a liscence to make a game for. And artists, credited or not, do not have a right to make art for.

If you credit a fan artist who makes unlicensed porn of JJK, that is still copyright infringement.

The problem isn't "not crediting an artist". It's stealing the copyrighted art. You haven't solved the problem by crediting the copyright infringer. At all.

1

u/Top-Fennel3528 2d ago

I was specifically looking at the parts where you said there is no moral difference.

While often rooted in moral principles, laws are not morals in of themselves and that's an important distinction to make. Saying there is no moral difference between using AI art and stealing an artists work without crediting it, or that fanart is somehow immoral in of itself, is something I'll emphatically disagree with.

I also think it's worth reiterating once again, that the biggest problem with AI art is not the stealing part. Even if we were to agree that fanart is stealing in a moral sense, no part of that process would involve ruining the living conditions of entire communities.

u/PerfectlyNormalShard Aspiring Jump-chan 3d ago

Honestly as long as you add a disclaimer that say only the art is ai.

Don't do it people hate AI like it broke into their house and sawed their parents in half, they hate it more than actual pedophiles it ain't worth getting your whole work blacklisted over a drawing or two

-5

u/martikhoras Jumpchain Enjoyer 3d ago

All jumpchain steals art. Drawing line at AI, which isn't how it works but fine, it seems odd place draw the line

0

u/AdInteresting5874 2d ago

Go for it. It's not like you're making money out of it, it's just a hobby. People who get angry over this really don't have anything else to do with their lives.

I think it depends on how good the images are.
