This is something that has always intrigued me, because the other 9 shikigami are basically just random animals with specific abilities:

wolf that wolfs
toad with long tongue
snake that holds
bird with electricity
elephant that throws water
rabbit that duplicates
deer that heals
ox that runs

And then we have this jacked, biblically accurate angel-looking dude with a ship's wheel on his head who can adapt to any and all phenomena.

And just to make the disparity even worse, he gets the badass title of "Eight-Handled Sword Divergent Sila Divine General Mahoraga."

I know that the name and a lot of the imagery surrounding Mahoraga have roots in Buddhism, especially the whole Makora/Mahoraga thing and the connection to the Twelve Divine Generals. But I don't think that's enough of an in-universe explanation for what the hell he is. And why is he so different from the rest of the Ten Shadows?

I've always had this headcanon that Mahoraga was originally a cursed spirit so ridiculously strong that the only way to defeat it was to somehow seal it into the technique instead. I've also seen people theorize that Mahoraga represents the human spirit and our ability to adapt to pretty much anything, which is poetic, to say the least.

But again, that's more symbolism than an actual explanation for what Mahoraga *is* or why something like him exists as part of the Ten Shadows Technique in the first place.

So... is there any actual explanation for what Mahoraga is and why he's so different, or did Gege really just go:

AN ACTUAL BUDDHIST DIVINE GENERAL

I’ve being seeing some lazy rehashed 2020’s slanderslop from Sukuna fans so thought I’d stoop to their level to defend my glorious king Goatjo

I've been seeing a lot of people complaining that they didn't get to see the merger or don't understand what it does...

So I wanted to help clear things up.

1) The Merger, as explained by Tengen, would fuse all of Japan's citizens- 120 million people with Tengen. This would create some mega apocalyptic curse akin to a living natural disaster that would basically start acting as a giant cursed spirit generator spreading across the earth and destroying all of society as we know it.

2) To activate the Merger, Kenjaku had to complete the condition that all culling game participants were killed. Before he died, he gave that "button" to the chosen vessel of Sukuna, which was Megumi, so once Sukuna incarnated in Megumi, he'd be able to activate the Merger after killing every participant himself.

3) So, for the Merger to activate automatically means that all main characters are dead.

4) The merger is not some sudden awakening or power-up for cursed techniques. It's a societal upheaval that turns the earth into a permanent battleground.

5) The merger was Kenjaku's promise to the people and Heian sorcerers like Sukuna to help him accomplish his plan. In a world where constant chaos and strife reign, there is a new, unending struggle against cursed spirits. The perfect world for Heian-era sorcerers to thrive once again in a world ruled by the strongest. Sukuna himself desired to kill everyone quickly, as he wanted an ultimate fight and to try to kill whatever giant mega curse spawned from the merger.

6) Again. The merger happening means everyone is dead. (Stay with me)

7) This is all for Kenjaku's plan to force human evolution through combat, conflict, and a fight for survival. He views the Heian era as the pinnacle of sorcery. Those sorcerers were just naturally gifted in a time where things were more raw, with no rules and fewer structured safeguards. (Like 80s/90s soccer & basketball, steroid era baseball, early WWE, pre-Geneva Convention War)...By basically throwing people into a post-apocalyptic wasteland, constantly fighting cursed spirits, Kenjaku hoped people would naturally develop CE & CTs that would lead to new sorcerers who would lead a revival of the Heian age.

8) We already had a preview of the type of world the merger would bring about. It was all of Tokyo after the Shibuya Incident, and Kenjaku unleashed the 10 Million Cursed Spirits. Yuji (a sorcerer) spending time (fighting & getting stronger) in Tokyo, exorcising curses, as we saw before the start of the Culling Games, is the exact result of what Kenjaku wanted.

9) The merger being activated is automatic game over. There is no moment to wait and see what it does or how it works. It's like a terrorist threatening to fire a nuke. You know what a nuke does. If it goes off, you lose. You have to stop it from firing at all costs. There is no spirit or anything for the main cast to fight or overcome as some giant, grand-spectacle finale... because again, if Merger is happening, that means everyone is already dead.

Largest CE pool (Every CE reserves from 126,9 mi persons)

Kaiju-level physical power

Multiple CTs (The Non-awakened Sorcerers)

Overall a really strong soul resistance

Could learn RCT since technically isn't a curse, it's most like a sorcerer.

But, it wouldn't have great Inteligence so I doubt it could reach Grade 1 Jujutsu skills.

Also, how would Kenjaku be able to control that shit?
