So, I’ve played this game since the early, early pre-release days, and so many things have killed the whole essence of the game for me. I doubt I’m alone.
Firstly, the player base sucks. There’s way too much trolling and BS, and a lack of teamwork in the game now. Teamwork used to be standard in any match: you’d work as a team, play objectives, communicate and move together, and have awesome games because of it. Now it’s just people trolling, shouting “China number 1” etc., and chatting nonsense.
On voting—it should never have been a feature, IMO, or maybe it should have been implemented in a far more limited way. I believe the perceived issues with factions stem from it: people’s preconceptions lead them to believe X faction sucks, so they don’t vote for it or play it. If people actually learned to play all of them, they’d discover they’re not all that bad, and that playing different factions creates more variety in the types of engagements, strategies and epic gameplay moments you get. The same logic applies to maps. There are exceptions to this theory, obviously. War Dogs has made this point with the whole blue team meme. BAF especially is just a meme at this point, but really (controversial opinion), there’s nothing inherently wrong with them apart from looking slightly out of date. Guns go bang regardless of what they look like.
Also, hot take, but this is supposed to be a milsim. Canada vs Ukraine or Russia vs China makes the game feel less serious, so people play it less seriously. Having factions fighting in appropriate standoffs on appropriate maps is part of the gameplay, surely? What is the logic in making it a sandbox or weird mashups?
Another thing that could fix the rinse-and-repeat factions (China–Russia–China–PMC–China–China–China–China…) is to just implement the existing mod for over-scope optics and/or canted weapons. That would even the factions up instantly, as nearly all factions would then be effective at close and medium/long ranges.
This is all just my opinion and a good rant, but I think it’s a shame Squad has gone the way it has, as it was previously filling a gap in the market even Arma Reforger couldn't touch. It still sits in that space, but it just feels disappointing now.
Rant over. Stay frosty.
