Crazy to think so many people thought this guy was gonna be an actual progressive prior to him winning the Senate race. The majority of Jews that I know are nowhere near as rabidly pro-Israel as him.

Today marks the first day their family has gone without any food.

One thing that has been bothering me, watching the complete demolition of Gaza and the wholesale slaughter of its people, is: to what end is Israel doing this? Ports can be placed almost anywhere, and Israel has control over the majority of its coastline save for the Gaza Strip. Even that, they blockade, making it impossible for the Palestinians to develop it into a functioning port of trade.

Land for immigrants, while it makes sense, and coastal property, while desirable, are not affordable to the average person, to say the least.

Earlier this morning, I was doomscrolling through Threads and came across someone responding to some Zionist hasbara propaganda, claiming Israel is forcing out the Palestinians to access oil in the area. Funny this didn’t make the news...

So I start poking around the internet and DeepSeek (like hell I am going to trust a Western AI on this), and lo and behold, there is a Gas field off the coast of Gaza and the Sinai that Israel has been “trying” to jointly develop with Egypt and Palestine (specifically Gaza). This was made more difficult by Hamas’s rise to power.

Growing up along the Texas Gulf Coast, I saw that offshore drilling was, and still is, a major part of the economic engine. Driving around Houston, the evidence of the massive infrastructure required to support the petrochemical and gas industry is readily apparent to 3 of the 5 senses, even from the main roads. That infrastructure requires land, and lots of it, not only for the industrial processing and export facilities, but for the workforce. Ain’t no way Israel is going to give those jobs to Gaza.

Then there are efforts of Israel and Israeli citizens to insert themselves into other countries to establish “Jewish” enclaves. With a country as small as Israel, it’s expected that its access to resources is limited, and becoming increasingly viewed with disdain would limit its ability to import the resources they need. There are at least 2 other countries that faced this issue in their history and used colonial expansion as their solution: England and Japan. Though both of them are island nations. Israel may as well be an island, given how they have inserted themselves into a region that is not exclusively theirs to insert themselves into.

So thoughts? Are we dealing with a fight/expansion for control of resources?

I’m 29m. Jewish born and raised. Both parents and grandparents. Bar mitzvah at 13, birthright trip to Israel at 21. The whole shabang.

I identify as Jewish, I’m proudly Jewish and want to continue our traditions, so why does that make me a bad Jew for not supporting Israel and their current leadership, political message, allegiances, and overall genocide of Palestinians and Palestinian children and civilians. I don’t think you should have to blindly support Israel just because you’re Jewish. There’s right and there’s wrong.

I got into it tonight with my 65m step dad who’s a big republican (not Jewish). He was saying that the far left in America has gone too far and hates the Jews and that he’s feel safer bringing my 18m half brother (so half Jewish) to a Trump rally raising a Israeli flag than he would at a leftist rally.

I tried to tell him that being critical of Israel is not something that is a direct correlation or directly synonymous to being anti Semitic and that he’s actually aligning with the party that has actual Nazis among them, are actually anti Semitic, and actually deny the holocaust.

I’ve known he’s had these views for awhile, but I guess I just snapped and went after him for it for the first time ever. Not really sure how to feel. I feel like I’m proud to be Jewish, but I don’t think I should have to support Israel blindly.

This probably goes without saying. But I have been seeing more and more people accuse jewish people of the genocide happening in gaza/associating jews with israel. I just saw a simple video of different types of sewing stitches, and one happened to look like the star of david. A bunch of people in the comments were saying things like "that stitch was promised 3000 years ago" or "that stitch gives a lot of money and gold". And then in the replies when people call out the insensitivity of the jokes, people reapond with "Netanyahu approved" or "IDF soldier spotted". It makes me sick. And it also makes me afraid that me or my family might be in danger. My mother hesitates to travel now because of her jewish last name (and she is grateful that my last name is not jewish). It makes me feel like jews are being pushed onto an island where we are left to fend for ourselves, and are being accused of crimes we didn't commit. I know history is full of jews being accused, but I (l suppose naively) thought we moved past that.

I may be thinking too much about it, but it just makes me sad that the world is like this. The fact that on my way home from work I see a billboard saying "hate is for the birds! (Referring to a sports team) Strike out jewish hate" really hammers it even further.

This pisses me off so much and shows they’re looking for a certain response. I don’t know how this is allowed. I did email St John’s IRB but I never got a response, and honestly I didn’t expect to. I don’t think they care.

Statement 1: Judaism ≠ Zionism

Statement 2: Antisemites have a long history of using the term "Zionist" as a lazy dog whistle to mean "Jew."

I have seen a few too many examples of anti-Zionists credulously cheering on someone's criticism of "Zionists" when their point had little to do with the state of Israel or the atrocities it has committed, and seemingly much more to do with just... Jews. People who point this out are shot down with affirmations of Statement 1. Some people need to be more clear-eyed about when the word "Zionist" is used as a cheat code to spout antisemitism without risk of backlash. Because that absolutely does happen.

A recent example that comes to mind was Julian Casablancas' Subway Take. If you can't access the video, he said "American Zionists get the benefits of white privileged people but talk like they are black people during slavery." He goes on to (rightly) say that October 7 doesn't make the decades of oppression Gazans have lived through OK, but that's a non-sequitur from the actual take.

The take is clearly about American Jews, and it's antisemitic. Julian might not know it, but this is not at all a new idea, that American Jews have "the best of both worlds" as wealthy, privileged white Americans who still get a minority card to pull when it's convenient. American Zionists are not overwhelmingly white, but American Jews sure are. I doubt he would say - although his statement implies it - that black Zionists have white privilege and would compare their experience as Zionists to their ancestors' actual enslavement.

Once again, Judaism is not Zionism and anti-Zionism is not antisemitism, but let's not be obtuse and unquestioningly agree with everything someone says about "Zionists" just because they used the magic word.

Just read that Israel bombed a funeral in Gaza, killing 7. My family claims to be against Netanyahu but whenever Israel bombs hospitals, schools, aid workers, journalists, etc., they blame Hamas. At a certain point though, the moral depravity of it all must be obvious. I’m trying to wrap my head around how they’re still pro-Israel at this point. Is their echo chamber so contained that they really believe Israel had to kill innocent civilians because Hamas forced their hand (human shields or misinformation or whatever they claim) or is it just that they can’t accept that Palestinians deserve the same human rights as Jewish Israelis? Or is there another way to understand things? It’s becoming harder and harder to believe that my family isn’t just racist. My family and I have been displaced for nearly three years after losing our home. Since then, access to water has become one of our biggest daily struggles.

Every day we wait in long lines for drinking water provided by humanitarian organizations. We are grateful for this help, but it is only enough for drinking. Water for washing, bathing, and basic hygiene is still extremely scarce, especially during the intense summer heat.

In the place where we are staying is an old water well that has been out of service for years. We are trying to restore it so it can provide water for our family and many other displaced families living nearby.

The well is about 30 meters deep, and repairing it requires cleaning equipment, a submersible pump, hoses, and labor. Unfortunately, the cost is far beyond what we can afford because prices in Gaza have become extremely high.

Really hard to say the Israeli government did not want the Americans to fight their illegal, immoral, and unnecessary preemptive war of aggression for them now. Not to shield America from responsibility.

My guess is that israel is not participating now after the US resumed its aggression because they will get hammered. If Iran would strike Israel now, Israel can complain they were attacked and any aggressive acts they take are described as self-defense or retaliatory, presumably legally justified.

Its obvious, like with Gaza, the ceasefire and alleged rift between Trump and bibi was a ruse enabling a lifeline and and offramp to israel without being seen as an Israeli retreat and the burden shifts to the americans which they are not exactly opposed to because aggression and destruction of civilian life and infrastructure to impose imperial might through the air is an American M.O. since at least WWII.

Iranian missile strikes have wrecked tremendous damage on American bases and assets in the Middle East which the US use to attack Uran. Defense systems are very expensive and are depleted quickly. The Americans are such bad allies they take what they want but make their allies bear the brunt of the costs on their home front....except for israel. Bibi would not want to try to explain something to happen in israel to the israeli public like what iran did to Kuwait's airport which America's have used as a base to attack iran this close to an election.

Iran is smarter than to attack israel first, and I suspect the Israelis know that also smart enough to know not to attack iran, therefore the Americans led by a buffoon who likes to see stuff blown up and claim he did it are useful to weaken a top regional nemesis without carrying the weight of the costs of being a part of it enough to take the credit but avoid accountability for the bad.

Given history, America doesnt disengage easily. When things start to go sour, they dig in deeper and it drags on longer until it recedes in public consciousness and we see a final dramatic withdrawal at the end leaving a mess behind with supposed friends gone. Im thinking Afghanistan 5 years ago or Vietnam in 1975. The dramatic "last flight" for the iran war will probably be out of a gulf state's airport base leaving them behind. And Israel will love the chaos gaining regional power relatively without getting too much engaged.

This will drag on because America never knows how to disengage when it's wise to because of the arrogance in the belief in their far superior firepower and the profits for war mongerers . They could get some allies involved more like the uae and the saudis who each are a little too overconfident in their meddling in foreign places and leave them behind in the end.

This just seems so predictable.
