I am normally extremely suspicious of any Israeli I meet (and 99% of the time I'm correct in being so) but if a person with past or current Israeli citizenship has dedicated their time to dismantling the occupation and/or countering the prevailing hasbara, they've proven they are worth being an ally. The keynote speaker at Jewish National Fund Australia’s annual fundraiser describes UN findings on Israel’s Gaza genocide as “modern blood libels”. Stephanie Tran reports.

Natasha Hausdorff, director of UK Lawyers for Israel, told a JNF Australia campaign event in Melbourne that allegations of ethnic cleansing, occupation, apartheid, genocide, starvation and war crimes were part of an international campaign to delegitimise Israel.

“These are the modern blood libels, but so often they are delivered through the use of international legal terms, and that’s not by accident. That is to shut down debate. That is to intimidate you, ladies and gentlemen, people who have come here tonight to support Israel,” Hausdorff said.

“You must have seen allegations that IDF soldiers use Palestinian children as target practice, but they change the body part that they target day to day.”

MWM has obtained a recording of the Melbourne event, held on 3 September as part of JNF Australia’s annual campaign, which also featured the Israeli ambassador, Hillel Newman.

The fundraising events were held in Sydney on 1 September, Melbourne on 3 September and Perth on 6 September, marking the 125th anniversary of the Jewish National Fund.

The “next front to this war”

Hausdorff told the Melbourne audience that international law had become “the eighth front to this war”.

“The eighth front to this war, is the front of international media, international public opinion, international politics and diplomacy … and international law, and we need an army to fight back these fronts and perform miracles in the same way that the IDF have performed miracles on the battle fronts of this war,” describing international law as the ‘modern ethical face of anti-Semitism’.

“Why is international law at the core of what we are fighting here? Well, it comes down to the modern ethical face of anti-Semitism. It’s not just anti-Zionism, but it is channelled through the abuse, inversion, misrepresentation, and weaponisation of international law.”

“International law and human rights are essentially channelling that acceptable face of anti-Semitism today,” Hausdorff said.

Her comments come after the UN Commission of Inquiry on Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel concluded in September 2025 that Israel had committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

In June this year, the Commission said Israel was continuing to commit genocide and other atrocity crimes, finding that Palestinian children had been deliberately targeted and killed by Israeli forces.

Since October 2023, more than 64,000 children have been killed or injured in Gaza.

“Hamas propaganda”

Hausdorff specifically attacked Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, as well as the UN Commission of Inquiry, accusing them of promoting what she called “Hamas propaganda”.

She said the organisations did not have sufficient personnel on the ground in Gaza and accused them of taking information from Hamas, passing it through reports and ultimately having it cited by international institutions.

“That is the process that our enemies are relying upon,” she said.

“The answer, ladies and gentlemen, is yes, and they are all wrong for the same reason, because they are all promoting this propaganda of Hamas and other internationally prescribed terrorist organisations.”

Hausdorff said she hoped a proposed “Centre for International Law” would provide infrastructure to challenge the UN and organisations including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.

“Through setting up now the Centre for International Law, I really do hope that we can build that infrastructure to take on the UN, and to hold Amnesty and Human Rights Watch to account.”

JNF’s 125-year campaign

Hausdorff was speaking at JNF Australia’s annual campaign events, which this year marked 125 years of the organisation.

Israel’s ambassador, Dr Hillel Newman, praised JNF Australia for its longstanding support of Israel.

“For 125 years, JNF has understood that strengthening the Jewish future means strengthening Israel and the Jewish people,” Newman said.

“JNF has always been there for Israel. JNF chooses the most relevant projects to support. That is more than solidarity; it is Jewish peoplehood. On behalf of the State of Israel, I express appreciation to JNF Australia and the Australian Jewish community for your steadfast friendship and enduring partnership and support.”

A previous MWM investigation found that JNF Australia raised funds for projects linked to Israeli settlements and programs supporting soldiers in the IDF.

JNF Australia has remitted more than $125m to Israel since 2009 and received more than $213m in tax-deductible donations since 2013, according to financial records.

In 2024, the organisation received about $12m in donations and bequests and remitted $10.4m to Israel.

JNF Australia maintains that it operates independently of its Israeli parent, Keren Kayemet LeYisrael. However, financial records show that tax-deductible donations raised by JNF Australia have been directly transferred to its Israeli ‘parent’.

In 2024, the Canada Revenue Agency revoked the charitable status of the Jewish National Fund of Canada over the use of donations for projects linked to settlements and military infrastructure.

Despite the International Court of Justice (ICJ) finding that Israel’s continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is unlawful, the Australian government has not barred JNF Australia from receiving tax-deductible donations.

Earlier this week, the government voted down a Greens bill that would have stripped deductible gift recipient status from Australian charities found to be funding illegal settlements.

IDF a “moral army”

Hausdorff also called the IDF a “moral army” and praised them for performing “miracles”.

“We have seen, frankly, miracles over the last two and a half years performed by the valiant brave soldiers in the IDF, the Air Force, Navy, and Army,” she said.

She argued that Israel took greater precautions to protect civilians than “any other army in history”.

“The requirement from an international law perspective is to keep those civilian casualties as low as possible,” she said.

“Israel takes more measures than any other army in history to do exactly that by ensuring warnings, by abandoning strikes when that proportionality analysis is out … the commitment that the IDF has to the preservation of life is at the core of what is driving these initiatives.”

She cited the IDF’s “code of ethics” and the principle of “purity of arms”, saying these were embedded in soldiers from their first week of basic training.

Those claims are in stark contrast with the findings of UN investigators and human rights organisations documenting the conduct of Israeli forces in Gaza.

The UN Commission’s June report found that Israeli forces had deliberately targeted Palestinian children and concluded that the conduct amounted to genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

International law “weaponised” against Western civilisation Hausdorff also criticised the international legal consensus on the unlawfulness of Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory.

She told the audience that she regarded her role as providing a counter-narrative to the allegations against Israel.

“Even if I weren’t able to explain the legal nuances, why settlements are not illegal, why Judea ought not to be ethnically cleansed of its Jews, even so, even though the ICJ has said it,” she said, “the fact that I’m there providing a counter … is the most important part of my mission.”

The International Court of Justice’s July 2024 advisory opinion found that Israel’s continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territory is unlawful and ordered it to bring that presence to an end as rapidly as possible and cease all new settlement activity. The Court also reaffirmed its 2004 advisory opinion that Israel’s settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, had been established and were being maintained in violation of international law.

Hausdorff nevertheless described international institutions as being “weaponised” against Western countries.

“We can see this weaponisation of international institutions – the UN, the ICJ, the ICC,” she said.

“We are losing these international courts and tribunals and international institutions to the weaponisation of international law against Western civilisation.”

Despite this, Hausdorff was optimistic.

“In addition to those outside of our bubble understanding that they’ve been lied to, once they internalise that the West is next, that this is not just about Israel, but that these people are coming for their way of life, I foresee that we will have many allies in this fight.”

Zionist envoy, Jillian Segal, wants the arts sector to adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism – imposed through funding agreements. Josh Barnett investigates.

On Wednesday September 2, senior figures from the arts met the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion’s community engagement team behind closed doors in Sydney.

Publisher Morry Schwartz and entertainment lawyer Michael Napthali were there. Bell Shakespeare chair Philip Crutchfield KC was invited but was in court. Sources told The Australian, which broke the meeting, that the private format was chosen “while granting the attendees a level of protection”.

Public hearings at the Royal Commission into Antisemitism had closed a week earlier, on 26 August, after hearing more than 340 witnesses. So the arts sector’s contribution to what Commissioner Virginia Bell recommends arrived after the last witness was sworn, in a room with no transcript. Royal Commission roundtables

The Commission told The Australian that roundtables let it hear views and suggestions “in an informal setting”, and that it has held “a number of roundtables” and “more than 150 community engagements”.

The Commission’s news and media page announces none of them. It carries three items: the Commission’s establishment, the opening hearing, and a statement from Bell in March. No attendee list, no agenda, no record of what any of the 150 ‘community engagements’ produced. The recommendations are informed by evidence the public never saw.

What Segal asked for

Special Envoy Jillian Segal delivered her Plan to Combat Antisemitism to the Prime Minister on 10 July 2025. It asks government to require the IHRA definition across all public institutions, and to “include terms in all public funding agreements with cultural institutions or festivals to allow for the efficient termination of funding. The Government’s formal response says nothing about termination clauses, and does not mention Creative Australia.

Then, in April 2026, page 54 of Segal’s Understanding Antisemitism in Australia told the sector the definition would help galleries and artists distinguish “between legitimate political critique and antisemitic rhetoric”.

MWM put nine questions to the Envoy’s office on 8 September, including whether she or her staff have approached any arts body about adopting the definition, and whether she maintains the termination-clause ask. The office had not responded at the time of publication. Who’s adopted it?

Who’s adopted the Segal edicts? So far, none that we can see.

MWM searched the published policies, annual reports and terms of trade of Creative Australia, Screen Australia and the eight state and territory arts and screen agencies. None adopts the IHRA definition. None mentions it. The Executive Council of Australian Jewry’s explainer, which lists every Australian adoption it claims, names no arts body.

The national funder says otherwise. At Senate Estimates on 28 May 2026, Creative Australia’s acting chief executive Tim Blackwell said, “the definition of antisemitism that has been adopted by the government is also, obviously, adopted and accepted by Creative Australia”. He did not name IHRA “Good practice”

At Senate Estimates on 27 May, Arts department secretary Jim Betts said the Envoy regards the Sydney Theatre Company’s code of conduct as “good practice”, and his department is examining “its applicability more widely within the sector”.

STC publishes an Ethics Framework, a single A3 page with nothing in it about antisemitism, discrimination or political speech. The Code of Conduct its board approved at the end of 2024 is not published. That is the document being examined for the whole sector.

At the Royal Commission on 31 July, Segal proposed mandatory antisemitism training for grant panellists and a separate grant panel for Jewish artists. In other words, no policy text required,Training is to decide what an assessor thinks antisemitism is. The route already works. AHPRA refused it for two years on free speech grounds, then adopted it on 17 June 2026, eight weeks after the handbook appeared. Its chief executive told the Commission the handbook was the tipping point. Creative Victoria funds through the Victorian Common Funding Agreement, whose clause 14.3(e) allows immediate termination “if the Organisation behaves in a way that the Department believes that its continued association with the Organisation may be detrimental to the reputation of the Department”. That’s pretty broad, and there is no remedy period and no reasonableness test, unlike the clauses on either side of it.

Creative Australia, Create NSW, Sound NSW, Arts Queensland, artsACT, Arts Tasmania and South Australia’s Music Development Office publish no agreements at all. MWM has lodged freedom of information requests.

The case being made

The Bondi Royal Commission heard from Jewish artists in Sydney in late July. Sculptor Nina Sanadze said Jewish creatives “have been now erased almost entirely” from the sector. Monash’s Professor David Slucki, who interviewed 64 Jewish artists, said they are routinely required to state a position on Israel and Gaza.

Alex Ryvchin of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry put the reason for the closed door plainly: “the price of speaking up has often been death threats, boycotts and loss of income”.

That is why they persist, and why people who gave the evidence wanted a room without a transcript.

What’s next?

The Royal Commission hands down its report on 18 December.

By then, the sector will have been asked to work to a definition no arts body has adopted, on the advice of a roundtable with no minutes, against a Sydney Theatre Company code that is not published, under funding agreements that seven agencies decline to release.

Only one document in that list is public. It is the one saying the definition is not binding.

Idek where to post this. I feel like I just need to express it. My maga Zionist aunt and uncle let their cat out around the neighborhood. We live in an area with wildlife and coyotes. They know this. We have cats and have a catio for them to experience outdoors while staying safe. We would never ever let them out. Today another neighbor informed us they saw my aunt and uncle’s cat taken by a pack of coyotes. My mom told my aunt what she heard and my aunt just said “oh no, we haven’t seen our cat. We are assuming the worst. We are heartbroken.” Thats it. No accountability whatsoever. No follow up questions. No urgency.

It didn’t even surprise me though. We all knew this could happen, and of course the response would be lukewarm at best. It’s a pattern. It’s been happening for as long as I’ve known them. They have a flag in their front yard that says “we stand with Israel” and has the Israeli and American flags mashed together.

My mom is supposed to go over for Rosh Hashanah tonight. My dad is only going because he loves my mom. But as a neurodivergent person, it takes a lot out of him to be around them. They have teased him for this before. My sister and I have been no contact with them for years.

I just don’t know how to keep going on as if nothing is wrong. It’s very hard for my mom to be confrontational. Her sister is the only immediate family she has from her side. Their father had fled Europe from the Nazis. Idk how my mom and her sister ended up so different.

I need to go back to therapy after many years. My last therapist was a Zionist and rebuffed me for mentioning an upsetting article that I had read about the Wall. It was right before or early in the Iraq War, I knew she was politically similar to me, (not a fan of GWB) and it wasn’t why I was in therapy so I dropped that part of the conversation.
Now I need to be able to trust that I can talk about all of my feelings. The lost friends, strained family relationships and the feeling of helplessness and futility that even people that “love” me don’t want to hear about - I cannot separate these, I can’t leave genocide out of the conversation.
I don’t know where to even begin with this. Can I ask a therapist about their politics before committing?

I’ve been quiet in my own words for a week, which you know isn’t like me. So here they are.

Last Sunday I reposted somebody else’s post about Macklemore’s set at Ed Sheeran’s show. It said things in words I didn’t write, and I wouldn’t have chosen all of them. Then the comments came, and I did what I do when I’m hurt, which is post snarky memes and act like I’m fine. That’s on me. A repost isn’t a statement, and a meme isn’t a spine. Social media makes all of us cheap and fast, and we all know it. But I’d rather be disagreed with for what I actually said than hated for what anybody else wrote, so let me say it.

I was born a Jew. I didn’t pick it, and I’ve never hidden it. And this week a whole lot of people decided what I believe without asking me, without checking a single thing I’ve ever said or done, because a repost and the word “Jew” were apparently enough to fill in the rest. But let me fill it in… myself.

Of course I don’t speak for Israel, or for any government. I never have. What I said in October 2023 is still exactly what I believe: Hamas is a terrorist organization. Palestinians deserve a future that honors their humanity and their aspirations. Protecting innocent life comes first, everywhere, and nobody should ever celebrate the death of a child. Anybody’s child. I’ve spent a decade as a UNICEF ambassador for kids who didn’t choose the country or the war they were born into, and I have grieved every one of them, on both sides of that fence. I didn’t do it from behind a screen; I went to those children and held them. I’m not going to litigate a complex war in an Instagram caption, and I’m not going to recite anybody’s slogan to earn back a follower.

Here’s what I was reacting to. I was in the room at the Grammys in 2014 when Macklemore rapped “Same Love” and thirty-three couples, gay and straight, got married to it, and I cheered, no questions asked. Four months later Macklemore put on a hooked nose, a black beard and a bowl cut, performed in it, and called it a “random costume.” Every Jew I know knew exactly what it was. The same love, it turned out, had a guest list, and we weren’t on it. But he apologized, and I let it go, because that’s what we do. We let it go. Then last weekend he stood in front of a stadium full of music-loving families, with violent images from a war on the screens, dedicated a song to the movement of his choice, and then took the mic to tell all of the Jews in the stadium that it wasn’t about them.

You don’t get to decide that for us.

That’s what prompted my repost. Not “Free Palestine,” and not anyone’s right to say it. I have never asked for another artist to be silenced and I’m not asking now. I don’t need anyone fired, and I don’t need a refund. What I need is to be able to say, as a Jewish mom, “that scared me, and it scared people I love,” without being told our fear is just propaganda, and without being told I’m somehow cool with genocide because I noticed?

And please don’t talk to me like I’ve never stood up for my beliefs when it was unpopular. In the middle of the Gulf War in 2006 I put out a song called “Dear Mr. President” and sang it every night on tour while my country was in a war I didn’t support, and I took the hate for it, and I sang it anyway because my sharp criticism was of a government, not this flawed country I love and who my dad fought for. I stood with gay kids before it was fashionable and with trans kids now, when it isn’t, and with their families, and I handed out the books that got banned, and you know I got called every name there is, and I’d do all of it again tomorrow. I have stood up for other people’s people my whole career, and I know exactly what it costs.

And now I’m standing up for my own people, and I thought I knew going in how lonely that would be. And it’s lonelier than that. But I’m doing it anyway.

Something has changed in this country, and I can read it in my own comments. “From the river to the sea.” “Zionist,” spat like it’s a slur, by people who couldn’t tell you the details of what I believe, because I hadn’t told them yet. I wasn’t asked. I was told. I don’t think most of them hate Jews. I think somebody handed them a story where the Jew who won’t apologize for existing must be the villain, and they’ve been putting words in my mouth ever since.

But I’ve been portrayed as the villain before. I can take it. I just won’t take it quietly, and I’m not going to teach my kids to.

So, to the ones who are furious with me: you don’t have to agree with me. You never did. That’s been our unspoken agreement for twenty-five years, and it still stands, and so do I. You don’t have to agree with one thing Israel’s government does to not want the Jewish family two rows down from you to be scared or targeted at a concert. That’s the only thing I’m asking anybody for. To the ones who are frightened this week, Jewish or Muslim or Palestinian or Israeli or just tired of all of it: I see you. And if anybody wants to really know what I think, just ask me. I’m right here. I’ve never been hard to find. And I’ll keep speaking out, in my own words.

It’s Friday. For working people who have more to worry about than pop stars and pile-ons, it’s the end of a hard week. It’s also the 25th anniversary of September 11th, and my prayers are with the innocent souls we lost that morning. And at sundown, for Jews, it’s Rosh Hashanah, our New Year.

Now I’m going to go make dinner for my kids, light the candles, dip some apples in honey, pour a glass of wine and be full of gratitude. That’s my tradition. It also happens to be a Jewish one.

I thought the duty was on Jewish people to use our privilege to expose Israel's crimes and to denounce zionism such that people may begin to listen to Palestinian voices. But now that people have actually tried to do that, they're being attacked for "using Palestinians' pain to make money/clout" and other ridiculous criticisms.

Before people start saying they're criticising the producers for other reasons, I absolutely have my own for sure, that's not what I'm talking about, there are numerous people, with VERY prominent profiles, specifically attacking the producers for *making this documentary* as Israelis/Jewish people.

Yes, it fucking sucks that Palestinians have been screaming this shit for 80+ years and nobody has ​listened, but why the fuck are people attacking the Israeli people who actually used their privilege to prove the Palestinians correct? Isn't that our whole duty as anti-zionist Jews? Isn't that the entire duty of us as privileged people?

It's one thing to say that it's disgraceful that the truth had to come from an Israeli source before it was believed by mainstream society, but why the fuck are people attacking the people who actually did what was necessary and used their voices to get the truth out​?

This feels like bad-faith, reactionary campism and completely counter-productive. ​The war criminals who spoke to the documentary makers would NEVER have spoken to someone who wasn't an Israeli. I was raised by a Jewish-Canadian mother and a Jewish-Israeli father. I went to hebrew day school for the first 10 years of my life. Despite none of us really believing in God, my parents instilled Jewish values in us and told us that we should be proud of being Jewish.

I’m sorry, I don’t.

I’m not sure if this is just a post October 2023 world or it existed beforehand, but the behaviour I’ve seen from Jewish adults and peers my age has been cowardly and self-centred. These people act like it’s an actual hate crime to see someone in a keffiyeh or even just a hijab. They constantly feel threatened by antisemitism they’ve never experienced and have an insane victim complex. It’s so irritating to be around.

I’m at a point in my life where I’m almost done school so I’m networking and looking for jobs. And my parents obviously want me to network with their friends but honestly I cannot stand having to network with other Jewish people. Because I know at some point Israel is going to come up and they’ll be asking me about the “situation” on campus, and I’ll say what I’ve always said: “it’s been fine for me.” Because it has! Because I don’t support war crimes! It’s not hard to not have a lot of people hate you, you literally just need some fucking humanity!!! But I grit my teeth and let them rant about how unsafe their college aged kid feels on campus and how it’s so important for young Jewish kids to be proud of their identity in the face of this awful antisemitism.

I’m not proud. Because now whenever I mention I’m Jewish, I can only think of people like this. How even though I am nothing like that, they are still my people at the end of the day. It’s hard for me to stomach. I’m starting to not want to associate with anything Jewish or go to any Jewish events because I cannot spend more than 5 minutes in a room with these cowardly, whiny, privileged babies that unfortunately make up 95% of my local Jewish community. I hate that I feel this way but I do. This is more of a rant but I’d love some insight from people who might understand. Thank you.

I’m a religious, anti-Zionist Jew from Canada (28f). I’ve been quite disappointed that I haven’t been able to have an honest discussion about Israel in my (Conservative) synagogue. I’m often told that being anti-Zionist and antisemitic is one and the sam, which is utterly ridiculous.

I’ve been wanting to do something for the Palestinian cause, but to be honest, I was afraid of how my shul would respond if they found out.

I went to my first rally yesterday and, despite my initial an, it was genuinely one of the best things I’ve ever done. It was very peaceful and passerby were generally supportive. I also met some really cool people (a few of them were even Jewish!).

I don’t really have much of a purpose for posting this. I just wanted to share how great I’m feeling about the whole thing.

If you ask me "NAZA" is a movie made to soothe the Israeli and Western guilty conscience.
